The abandoned monkeys live off of trash and are dependent on handouts from those who take pity on them or from those who come to further exploit and abuse them to make more content for RUclips. It is nice to sit back and judge others, but it is unfair to do so without recognizing all the complexities involved with an issue. The truth is there really are not many good options for a monkey like Yiyi and YoYo. We do not have to like to see animals trained to do skits to recognize that not everyone who does so is abusive. In western culture animal performances have become taboo, but there was a time when domestic and wild animals were commonly trained to perform in circuses, shows and the motion picture industry. In the not so distant past animal training was an acceptable practice even in the west. We have not seen Yiyi being trained, but those of us who have been watching long enough did get to see some of the techniques Nguyen used to train YoYo and the techniques he used were the same as those used by professional animal trainers. There is definitely a dark side to the pet monkey business, but not all keepers are the same. Macaques and monkeys in general are sensitive creatures and those who are subjected to abuse, deficient care or live in inadequate conditions will display stereotypies like thumb/digit sucking, little or no vocalisation, circling etc. etc. etc., Yiyi displays none of these and is actually much more secure and confident than most of the macaques of similar age on social media. If you take some time to learn what to look for you can usually tell which animals are not being cared for humanely... Many of the macaques on social media do exhibit stereotypies and other outward signs of abuse and mistreatment, but both of the monkeys in this family are curious, secure and well adjusted. Yiyi and YoYo will have a forever home with this family and that fact alone makes these animals better off than 99% of all the others. This family is dedicated to the care and well being of their animals and have shown this to the viewers over the years. They have constructed enormous enclosures similar in size and design to those seen in animal parks and sanctuaries where their monkey's can safely jump, swing. climb, and play till their heart's content. Yiyi is not confined indoors all day, she has grass to run through, trees to climb, a pond to splash in, all kinds of fresh fruits and vegetables to eat and other creatures to engage with. I do not contend the Yoyo family are champions of animal rights, but it is unfair to accuse them of abuse and to fail to recognize the animals in this family are much better off than so many others. At the end of the day the situation for macaques stinks, but it is more than a bit disingenuous to accuse abuse when in fact almost everyone alive benefits from the misery of macaque monkeys in some way. You see, in many of the same countries where it is illegal to capture, breed or keep macaques as pets, it is perfectly legal to breed and possess them for scientific research. Macaque monkeys are the most widely used breed of monkey for medical and scientific research and each year countries around the world breed and export hundreds of thousands of monkeys to be used for research purposes. The US currently imports approximately 30,000 primates each year for research and testing. The long-tailed macaque was elevated from "vulnerable" to "endangered" in 2022, due to exploitation by the research industries. Lab monkeys do not live good lives, little Yiyi lives like a QUEEN compared to those in labs, most never leave their cages, breathe fresh air or feel grass beneath their feet, to say nothing of the pain and sickness they experience as a result of the testing and experimentation. Almost everyone alive today has benefitted from the medical and scientific breakthroughs made possible as a result of the research and experiments conducted on primates. There is a great deal of hypocrisy in our society when it comes to primates and macaques in particular. While so many parts of the world worry about "pet" monkeys and pass laws prohibiting it, those same countries are perfectly comfortable with their citizens owning monkeys for work related purposes. If you've consumed coconut oil, coconut meat or products containing coconut lately, there's a good chance it was imported from Thailand. And if it was, there's an even better chance the farmer who grew that coconut had a macaque fetch it from a tall tree. Coconut farmers in Sri Lanka, Malaysia, India and other countries in the region frequently rely on monkeys, too. Thailand has been raising and training macaques to pick coconuts for roughly 400 years. These working macaques are sent to schools where they are taught how to pick coconuts. These working monkeys are tethered to trees where they pick coconuts throughout the work day and are kept as pets by their owners outside work hours. Those who work in the industry say the majority of coconut picking macaques work in a cruelty free environment, but this is not the case for all working monkeys and there are cases of abuse and neglect. 99% of coconuts in Thailand are picked by macaques and animal rights groups cite numerous cases of handler abuse including whippings and cases of monkeys being dangled by their tethers. I am just guessing, but I would think any of those working monkeys would be happy to trade places with Yiyi. Wouldn't it be nice if we lived in an ideal world where animals lived free from human interference, use, exploitation and abuse? I think we can all agree that it would be, but we don't live in that world. We live in a world where humans have used animal labor to increase productivity, to make tasks more manageable and to entertain us since the beginning of time and likely always will. The state of affairs with macaque monkeys is quite convoluted and none of the situations I described is an ideal life for such a beautiful and intelligent creature, but is any one of these situations really any better or worse than any other? Is it fair to throw unkindness and negativity at this family or any of the people who keep pet monkeys while we drink our coconut milk and take our Ozempic, Wegovy, Tezspire or other medication tested safe for our consumption by a macaque?

Many of the macaques on social media do exhibit stereotypies and other outward signs of abuse and mistreatment, but both of the monkeys in this family are curious, secure and well adjusted. Yiyi and YoYo will have a forever home with this family and that fact alone makes these animals better off than 99% of all the others. This family is dedicated to the care and well being of their animals and have shown this to the viewers over the years. They have constructed enormous enclosures similar in size and design to those seen in animal parks and sanctuaries where their monkey's can safely jump, swing. climb, and play till their heart's content. Yiyi is not confined indoors all day, she has grass to run through, trees to climb, a pond to splash in, all kinds of fresh fruits and vegetables to eat and other creatures to engage with. I do not contend the Yoyo family are champions of animal rights, but it is unfair to accuse them of abuse and to fail to recognize the animals in this family are much better off than so many others. At the end of the day the situation for macaques stinks, but it is more than a bit disingenuous to accuse abuse when in fact almost everyone alive benefits from the misery of macaque monkeys in some way. You see, in many of the same countries where it is illegal to capture, breed or keep macaques as pets, it is perfectly legal to breed and possess them for scientific research. Macaque monkeys are the most widely used breed of monkey for medical and scientific research and each year countries around the world breed and export hundreds of thousands of monkeys to be used for research purposes. The US currently imports approximately 30,000 primates each year for research and testing. The long-tailed macaque was elevated from "vulnerable" to "endangered" in 2022, due to exploitation by the research industries. Lab monkeys do not live good lives, little Yiyi lives like a QUEEN compared to those in labs, most never leave their cages, breathe fresh air or feel grass beneath their feet, to say nothing of the pain and sickness they experience as a result of the testing and experimentation. Almost everyone alive today has benefitted from the medical and scientific breakthroughs made possible as a result of the research and experiments conducted on primates. There is a great deal of hypocrisy in our society when it comes to primates and macaques in particular. While so many parts of the world worry about "pet" monkeys and pass laws prohibiting it, those same countries are perfectly comfortable with their citizens owning monkeys for work related purposes. If you've consumed coconut oil, coconut meat or products containing coconut lately, there's a good chance it was imported from Thailand. And if it was, there's an even better chance the farmer who grew that coconut had a macaque fetch it from a tall tree. Coconut farmers in Sri Lanka, Malaysia, India and other countries in the region frequently rely on monkeys, too. Thailand has been raising and training macaques to pick coconuts for roughly 400 years. These working macaques are sent to schools where they are taught how to pick coconuts. These working monkeys are tethered to trees where they pick coconuts throughout the work day and are kept as pets by their owners outside work hours. Those who work in the industry say the majority of coconut picking macaques work in a cruelty free environment, but this is not the case for all working monkeys and there are cases of abuse and neglect. 99% of coconuts in Thailand are picked by macaques and animal rights groups cite numerous cases of handler abuse including whippings and cases of monkeys being dangled by their tethers. I am just guessing, but I would think any of those working monkeys would be happy to trade places with Yiyi. Wouldn't it be nice if we lived in an ideal world where animals lived free from human interference, use, exploitation and abuse? I think we can all agree that it would be, but we don't live in that world. We live in a world where humans have used animal labor to increase productivity, to make tasks more manageable and to entertain us since the beginning of time and likely always will. The state of affairs with macaque monkeys is quite convoluted and none of the situations I described is an ideal life for such a beautiful and intelligent creature, but is any one of these situations really any better or worse than any other? Is it fair to throw unkindness and negativity at this family or any of the people who keep pet monkeys while we drink our coconut milk and take our Ozempic, Wegovy, Tezspire or other medication tested safe for our consumption by a macaque?
