    Totally understanding buck scrapes will always be a mystery that deer hunters will always try to figure out. In this video I talk about the three different types of scrapes that bucks make and witch ones are good to hunt and witch ones are a waste of time.

    this video actually explains alot, ive hunted a spot and seen deer for 5 years straight, but the thing was, was that there was a bunch of oak trees, there was scrapes, rubs, and alot of deer sign, but then about 3 years ago there wasnt any acorns coming off the trees, i still hunted the spot, its like the deer just left, but still hunted the spot for 3 years, this year there was alot of acorns, and the deer came back lol guess it was a secondary scrape thing you were talking about

    their use to be 4 PSA on my place I harvest a huge buck every other year but in 2010 killed a 160 plus bucks, and they quit using the area, now all I find are the Dummy scrapes, It has not stopped me from taking huge bucks 140 plus along the rub lines , but they just do not seem to be making any PSA any longer , last season 2015 I counted 13 bucks using the rub lines , this season 2016 they made like 20 dummy scrapes only used them the one time. I still took a huge 5 year old 11 point 140 plus , I think it had a lot to do with the huge old bucks I been killing that changed the way they scrape now , 300 acres and not found a PSA at all just the dummys .

    Hunting a area that is a passage way between bedding and food source, took uncle with me and buck busted him ,there are many rubs and scrapes , I have a stand 150 yards away from that area that is full of runways should I try that area being uncle got us busted ? deer also seem to come from left and right of the main stand never from behind and never from the front . thinking I may catch the bigger bucks in that area trying to circle the main stand where the bait is, what do you think ?

    • @JacobSchmittDeerHuntingSchool
      @JacobSchmittDeerHuntingSchool  7 лет назад +1

      If the rubs and scrapes stay active I would just move the stand in a different tree so he don't know to look for it. In the rut they will circle down wind of a bait area to scent check it for does. If he stops moving past the stand you uncle got busted in the rubs and scrapes will move as well.

    I have 40 acres of non hunted land bordering a creek with lots of 8 and 10 points but they seem to only come through in the dark mostly to get at my persimmon tree. Now as I have said I have lots of pictures of buck hanging out at night but have yet to see one in the light (other than a few pics) and there isn't much deer sign infact I have only just today found 1 scrape with an accompanying rub. Now from what your describing this one rub/scrape sight looks like a dummy scrape in open woods by itself etc. So should I hunt it and if not where would be some good place to hunt? up until this point I have set up mostly on the persimmons tree and on a little brushy field.

      you could try putting a buck decoy in that little field. They bucks are not on your camera because your camera is not close enough to wherever their bedding are is. you could try to create bedding areas on your property on the farthest corner then hunt in between bedding and food. I own 4 acres and live on it. I hunt behind my house and only time any bucks will come during the day is middle of the rut. I am like 1000 yards from the bucks bedding area.

    hi, I found a scrape line (on trees) passing close to a area filled with apple trees. should I hunt close to the scrapes or should I go further with the wind in my face. some people say that the bucks never come to scrapes without winding them from faraway. how do you think that the bucks approach the scrapes ?

    • @JacobSchmittDeerHuntingSchool
      @JacobSchmittDeerHuntingSchool  6 лет назад

      Most of the time they just pass by them down wind and never even come to the scrape. I almost aways try to set up down wind on a rub line. I will say for sure. There is never a never or always with deer they do come to scrapes from down wind most of the time but some times they will just walk right up to it with the wind to there back. Any one that says that they always use the wind is not telling the truth. Even big bucks will walk with the wind to there back.

    • @thereelaccountant9246
      @thereelaccountant9246 4 года назад

      @@JacobSchmittDeerHuntingSchool your right about bucks walking wind to their back. I've seen them do that. I've heard they do that sometimes so they can smell danger from behind and see what's ahead of them. Sometimes it's different though. This really only matters if you know exactly where deer are going to come from, and mid rut we have no idea, except for maybe most the doe herd.

    I What about a 4 ft square scrape and 15 ft away there is a much bigger scrap, is it one deer making them, or more than one deer?

    I'm trying to learn about scrapes.. My biggest question: Is there anything in the woods (specifically a turkey) that can make a scrape on the ground that remotely resembles a buck scrape?
    Can you accidentally confuse something that's NOT a buck scrape, with a buck scrape?? .. and if you can, how can minimize the probability of making that mistake?

    • @JacobSchmittDeerHuntingSchool
      @JacobSchmittDeerHuntingSchool  4 года назад +1

      Goof's Outdoor Adventures yes a turkey scratching can sometimes resemble a buck scrape. Most of the times there will be a licking branch on a buck scrape if you look at it close 99% of the time there will be deer tracks in the scrape also you can see the hoof marks when a buck scrapes it out some times deer and bucks just use licking branches and never make a scrape from what I can tell they are used just as much as scrapes bucks also do what I call a dummy scrape it’s mostly when another buck is around like an intimidating act and a lot of times there will not be a licking beach on them they will resemble more of what a turkey would do most of the time

    I found a huge scrape. placed a camera and left it there for two days. he showed up both days once 4am and 8pm. i placed a mock scrape real close to his with a drip bag, in hopes to get him to come in during daylight hrs. But im still confused on how to set up to bag this buck. any ideas what to do?

    • @JacobSchmittDeerHuntingSchool
      @JacobSchmittDeerHuntingSchool  9 лет назад +2

      You need to find his trail back to his bedding area and get closer to his bedding area. Wait for the moon to be right for evening hunting. Witch is this week! If he is coming there everyday his trail should have some rubs on it somewhere to indicate his morning and evening route. He is more likely to come in the evening this time of the year because deer this time of year have a hard time staying bedded down all day the daylight is to long. You need to get as close as you can to his bedding area without spooking him. Leave the camera on the scrape, don't mess with it for a week or two and find all his trails you can find. You need to figure out a plan to hunt him. If you are getting pics, can find his morning and evening trails, and his bedding area you can get him. Just need to put some thinking into it and be patience.

      the 4th is PA opening day. Also i have a pretty good idea where hes bedding. and there is a pretty decent trail heading towards a corn field. He has some pretty decent rubs and small trees hes either broken or rubbed raw. i was goin into it but the sign was so great i knew i had to back off. and thats when i found his scrape. I placed a mock scrape next to it, and hopefully i get him to come during light. Im going tomorrow to check, its been one week since i been there. but stand location is what im worried about. being they usually J hook into scrapes to check area first unless he doesnt feel thats the need but its instinct. im hoping sitting will show what hes doing...

      Sounds like a good buck to hunt! Not trying to tell you what to do but if you have rain coming I would wait until then to go in figure out where to set up and set up on him in the rain, and I would forget the scrape and hunt his evening rub line as soon as it stopped raining if at all possible.

      Jacob Schmitt sadly, I am having problems with people running there dogs on this property. So i went to where i used to hunt. and found about 20 scrapes and 30 rubs within 50 yards of eachother.

    In other the words, do the obvious thing and hunt a lot of scrapes...which never works. Most bucks check scrapes at night and scent check during the day down wind

      +Jacob Schmitt (Deer Hunting School) I hunt West of Fordyce. It's been light the past 2 years. We've got 3800 acres and finally this year, I've got two 8 pointers hanging out at my feeder on the cam. I wish I could keep them there and let them get bigger next year, but probably won't happen.
