I would suggest not to have anything drone related on your mobile devices, keep them on a paper copy in your flight bag, as once you have handed your device to the officer you have given him permission to search that device, so always keep your mobile device to yourself, as it's surprising how much information people have on them that the police are not privy to.
One other thing if the officer is aggressive in any way or form ask them if it is a consensual conversation, if you feel it's not then you do not have to speak to them, as anything you say can and will be used against you, if he asks to see operating number and pilots licence do show them but not from your device, my motto is with handling police is say nothing, fear nothing. So the least said the least trouble for yourself.
Unless they can categorically say you have broken any laws regarding drone flight keep quiet and let your solicitor do the talking not you even if you feel you have to tell your side of the story DON'T.. and if you are arrested don't rely on their duty solicitors as they work for them.
PS You are not required to incriminate yourself whatsoever, so the less said, the job of investigation is down to them as your not obligated to do it for them.

Yeah police and government drones so they can spy on, control and harass you even more for not wearing 6 masks in your shower or social distancimg from your wife in bed or whatever.
Half the reason they're pushing all these crazy new drone laws on civilians.
They see their potential for control and want it for themselves, and don't want you impeding on it.
Same as why they stripped you of all your firearms and weapons, effectively outlawing citizens right to self defense. Especially against them wjen they cross the line.

Thanks for this. Legal drone flying brings so much more to photography and creators. Like others here, when we're actually doing nothing wrong, I agree that some people are hostile to cameras and drones, thinking they know it all and more than the CAA does. 'Karens' and 'Herberts'. Speaking (writing?) as a very 'senior' newbie to drones with a first purchase bargain Mavic Mini on the way, your videos are really useful. Apparently I'll have to do courses and a Flying ID or something, and I'll get it all done asap before flying. Also apparently, the Mavic Mini may be less restricted than others which might provide a bit more freedom. Even so, it's probably best to stay far away from humans, built-up areas, and homes.

Years ago, some friends and I used to kite buggy on an out-of-town council owned playing field. We were often visited by a council employee in a van threatening us to leave or he'd call the Police. Knowing we were doing nothing wrong, we asked him to call them. Two officers duly arrived and asked us two questions: 1. Did we pay council tax? Yes. 2. Are we doing any damage? No. That ascertained, the Police said as council tax payers doing no damage or harm to anyone, we were free to carry on. Not before we got a pic of uniformed Police sat in kite buggies :-) Unfortunately, the council won in the end by eventually planting random goalposts and trees all over the field to keep us out and make the land useless.

Most police forces in the UK either have a drone unit or work with drone pilots, so the levels of knowledge by ordinary officers are improving. Making the situation safe finding out what the officer (or a member of the public) thinks you are doing wrong and addressing that in a non-confrontational way is the best way to avoid wasting everyone’s time.
YT is full of people proving points with the police, it’s never a positive experience. It is however a great way to get anti- drone bylaws passed so the next time you fly there you will be in trouble. 😖

Plenty of them are just regular guys trying to do their jobs but just as many are aggro wankers out to pick a fight with someone. My last formal altercation with the police was 7 years or so when a pair of coppers jumped out at me from nowhere shining torches in my face and aggressively asking “WHO WERE YOU JUST TALKING TO?” This made no sense because I was on my own literally just stepping into the entrance of a park from a main road, trying to put an empty packet of crisps in a bin, not longer after sunset. They still insisted that there was someone hiding near me. Who was the last person you were talking to? “My mate Fionbharr”. And where is he now? “Northern Ireland”. Don’t be giving me any lip, boy. Do you want to come down the station? For fuck’s sake, you just asked me who I was most recently speaking to and that was my mate on the phone in Belfast, I’m trying to dispose of a packet of crisps and I’ve just come back from the pharmacy with gut medication (which I showed them) and I really want to go home. Are we done yet? They managed to drag this out to 25 minutes including the whole PNC check, and forensically searching the bin wearing white gloves, and determining that there was in fact a recently deposited pack of ready salted Walkers Crisps. They were absolutely desperate to find an excuse to search me for drugs of some kind, but as I pointed out to them they had no probable cause (and we got the “we can do this the hard way if you think you’re clever” chat), and basically unless you’re detaining me I’m going home to do a massive poo.
On leaving I briefly stopped just to ask what was the reason they were going to put on their form and they said “suspicious use of a bin”, so I said does that mean you are formally advising me not to use bins after dark because it’s “suspicious” and sufficient grounds for a stop&search? And after brief pause they said “yes”. So apparently that’s official advice from Hampshire police force. Don’t dispose of rubbish at night or we’ll stop you to ask asinine questions and threaten you for half an hour.
Granted most of them aren’t like that, but plenty are. I don’t suppose looking vaguely foreign does me any favours.

Quite possibly the best video you have produced Sean - thanks.
Good practice is to wear a bodycam yourself if flying alone. I've been threatened to be shot with a shotgun by a lunatic local when flying within an FRZ - with full Airport Tower permission.
The Police, typically have absolutely no idea what the rules are - and really don't like being filmed, especially live streamed. However, if you do attend a protest environment and are positive you can fly there - then always seek out the Inspector on the ground and 'inform' them where you will be flying, and what you will and won't be doing with the drone.
Chances are you won't be bothered at all after that, well - most of the time anyway.

Drones are not something that the average police officer will encounter that often and is not something routinely trained. Avoiding arrest is always best. Unfortunately, many police "interactions" don't go that way. Prepare for arrest. Prepare to have everything you brought with you taken into evidence. Prepare to be questioned by someone trained to interrogate you with the intention of charging you with...er...something. Prepare to be held for an uncomfortable amount of time while being made uncertain if anyone is aware of your location while in custody. Prepare to be charged with...er...something. Prepare to be left wondering if you will ever see your expensive drone and all your other neat and expensive gear that the police took from you ever again. Totally with you on that. As I said somewhere up the thread, my last serious interaction with the police was where they jumped out at me from nowhere in a park, and spent half an hour absolutely desperately trying to find a way they could arrest me for putting a packet of crisps in the bin. I know my rights and that I don’t even have to give them any of my details if they have no probable cause but this was met with all the usual “want to spend the night in the station sonny, don’t you lie to us” threats, etc. i eventually left free but profoundly unsettled by the experience for some time. It was amazing the lengths they went to to try to find an excuse to fully search me for drugs (after the PNC guys told them “no trace” on the radio), including forensically examining a dustbin, and generally wasting mine and their own time for half an hour, while I was simply trying to get home and take the medication I’d just bought for my gut problems. They saw me walk into the park, followed me in, and yet seemed obsessed with an imaginary person only they could see who had “just run away”. I wish I never had to say this but yes, I’d really recommend filming them too, and don’t use your primary phone as controller.

I can not run the risk of getting arrested by the police as I have one of those faces that look guilty even when I haven't done anything. I get nervous and say inappropriate things and joke about and always seem to unintentionally offend. I have had my Mavic Mini since December but it hasn't been outside yet due to lack of places to fly locally and the Coronavirus lock down but the mere thought of being challenged by a police officer who may not know the rules is enough to keep the drone in the box. I have registered as operator and flyer and have insurance but I am afraid that the CAA along with local councils have killed all the pleasure of drone flying for me and so I will now offer my Mavic Mini with fly more combo on eBay auction starting at 99p.

You might also show the officer your flight and maintenance logs to establish that you are experienced and knowledgeable about the laws concerning drones.

And the costs of being a commercially competent pilot has soared beyond belief. Stick to greenbowls or crochet. Just make sure no one see's you do it.

Many parts of the current system are comical for example keeping or having your flying ID on you ...when unlike every single other "license" I pay and register for they do not even provide a printable and recognisable license ,having to go through smart phone to show officers you are entitled is a poorly thought out idea and those Police I have dealt with were not willing to accept it UNTIL they queried with another officer.
Also the poor wording of the act makes many including Kelly Tolhurst MP (under secretary of state) that the rules do not apply to any sub 250g drone . I queried this through my MP when asking why it was illegal for me to fly a 25g whoop in my back garden FPV (without spotter)
and received a letter in response stating that the regulations and registration apply to all drones between 250g and 20kg ,as this was a direct response to my query on sub 250g uav it is hard to take it as anything other than a statement that sub 250g are not covered by current regulations..
The change to EASA reg's are still due in the new year ,but without education of Police officers problems will still occur
If you PM me I will send a copy of the ministerial response to my direct query .

Greetings from Cyprus! Great content Sean. Here in Cyprus the local Cyprus CAA insist on registration of your drone (free via an online portal), but they issue no registration number or even a confirmation email that you are actually registered. Considering that in December 31st 2020, Cyprus will have to comply with the new EASA regulations it will be interesting how compliance will be administered. I seriously doubt that any local police officer has any idea about the regulations. I attended a course here, and have an Open Category Recreational Flyer certification (which I always carry when flying), but have recently completed my A2 Certificate of Competency (CofC) with UAVHub in the UK to comply with the new EASA regulations. It will be interesting if the Cyprus CAA will recognise my UK A2 CofC certification when you new EASA regulations become law at the end of 2020. I doubt it actually, but we will see! Cheers

@@Geeksvana There's a lot on RUclips about "Oi, get off moi land" and so on, so I've been tracking down farmers where I can and asking their permission - in case I have to leave a public right of way in some emergency, or to get VLOS for a desired shot. I give my contact details and tell them when I will be around, and nobody has objected in any way. Some say "call me", others say "any time".
Today, the news is of crime in the countryside. While out with my drone in the last month, I have come across poachers, wild campers (why were they not using the public access land 50 metres away?) and unauthorised detectorists (well, thieves). It's not surprising that any unfamiliar activity can be a trigger for a farmer to call the police or at least want to check a flyer out. Your recommended approach is spot on for them too.
We all think, when in wilderness, that we are the only ones to be there. But filming in a beauty spot is like gunning my motorbike on a quiet road... I may not encounter any other vehicle for miles, but the guy who tends his garden by those bends where I love to get the pegs down can hear the next biker coming before I am out of sight, and might have several hundred bikes roar past every Sunday.
Let's just be considerate, and ambassadors for drone flight. It costs nothing.
Like the idea of the hi-viz flyers vest, BTW. XXL for me.

Hey Edward! Thanks for the kind feedback, I really appreciate it! Are you in the UK? If so, I woild wholeheartedly recommend the Drone Assist app. If you search on Geeksvana channel there is a video showing you how to use it and find places to fly. Hope this helps.

@@Geeksvana thank you for your response, I am in the UK and have been looking for an app like this for a while 😃
I have a question relating to quite a specific issue: What should you do/aren’t required to do when confronted by private security near racecourses (or on private land) I’ve recently had an experience of it and wasn’t sure of my rights. Once again, any advice is greatly appreciated for a newbie pilot

Can I ask a question about the altitude please: If I'm in, say the lake district on a deserted hill, at sunrise or sunset, at a height of 500m, and I want to capture the vista in front me on a photo or a video, can I use a drone such as a DJI 2Pro or a Parrot Anafi? Or is that case that by already being at 500m I'm above the flight ceiling anyway?

    • @Geeksvana
      @Geeksvana  3 года назад

Hey Gurinder Punn! Thanks for taking the time to comment. You must keep your drone within 400ft of the closest surface of the earth. So if you are stood on a 500m mountain then you can fly 400ft up from where you are stood. However, if there is undulating surface you must adjust the drone. There is an excellent graphic to describe this on the CAA UK drone registration website. Hope this helps.

Just a quick comment. For some reason "all" of the audio on your videos is different than most others. I listen through headphones and it's like there is a massive increase in bass and an equal amount of reduction in the treble. It's very difficult to hear what you're saying. I have jumped back and forth between your videos and many others to make sure that I'm not complaining about something that I should adjust on my devices. I have found that you videos just sound like they're muffled by bass. If I'm the only one, then I'm sorry for wasting your time here. I do enjoy your content and knowledge on drones, and I'm obviously not in the minority there! Thank you.

Hey domelite! Thank you so much for taking the time to reach out. Audio was always an issue for me, mainly due to lack of knowledge lol. More recently, I think it has improved a lot because I try to get it working at source rather than needing treating. I have just replaced all the mics we use, so fingers crossed it improves a lot 🤞.
Again, appreciate you reaching out. This kind of feedback is very important to me.

As a matter of curiosity, is there any FAA - CAA/UK reciprocity for traveling drone flyers/photographers/videographers, or is life going to be complicated, and are we going to be limited to sub-250 gram drones when finally able to travel in a post C-19 World ?

    • @Geeksvana
      @Geeksvana  4 года назад

Hi Leonard Oglesby! Thanks for taking the time to comment, I really appreciate it!
Any travelling drone flyer would need to register and pass relevant tests between the UKCAA and FAA. Although once the new EASA regulations are in place over the EU, flyers on the continent will be able to fly across border under the same rules and registration!
