I watch several DIY channels besides yours, Herrick, but for this technique I'll add one of my common thoughts when I see something for the first time: "WHY didn't I think of that?" Before you removed the template discs from the ends, you could have lowered the saw blade and rough shaped the stool legs as well, reducing the time spent with the hand planer....

Your idea of lowering the blade to get the rest of the legs shaped is brilliant... "Why didn't I think of that?" 🙂 And to take the concept a step further, I think I could put a long tapered wedge under the round end discs to get a uniform taper on the legs!

"Same Scene, take TWO! Why... didn't I think of the wedge trick?! We do it on a horizontal plane for tapering a leg, it would also work in the vertical mode....

Great idea, never seen a vid of this before. A close up of how to drive the wedge and cutting the legs for the arc of the bottom and getting the leg lengths right would also be nice. Thanks.

COOL Herrrick that is like how do you fit a square peg in a round hole.

Great vision on getting the job done with the tools that you already own. It’s nice to watch a craftsman work whose original purpose was not to sell you another tool. 🤣

A lathe would make quick work of that task - but it's always nice to have other ways to get it done !
I'm partial to a lathe , since it's much easier to get a 'precise fit' . . . * My cheap Chinese machine will turn 8 1/4 " x any suitable length , with a 'jigged' tailstock support. . . ** TRUELY 'round' tenons would be much better support , however ; the NATURE of wood tends to shrink & swell with humidity changes .
    Good stuff ! Thanks . . .

Would have never thought to do that. Think I will make it a little oversize if I try it and then creep up on the final fit. The stool came our right nice! Chestnut is a wonderful wood. I hope it can be re-established as a species. I have a knife with reclaimed chestnut on the handle.

The idea is pretty clever. The video I'm interested in is how to drill the 4 holes in the slab of firewood so the legs aren't all wonky or do you just get them close by eye and trim all the legs to come out even so the stool doesn't wobble?

Doesn't look too hard to replicate with a miter saw, but at that point I could just do square cross section of tenon
