    You've almost got it. If it can fire 4 shots in a row, you know it can be made to fire reliably. A caliber conversion in a mag fed semiauto is one thing, converting it to a rimmed cartridge is a new beast. Worse comes to worst, it will end up in a Forgotten Weapons video. When it comes to all firearm development, making mags is the most difficult thing to do. When doing caliber changes, it's best to take mags that already work for the caliber and make an adapter for the gun your doing the conversion on.

    Replace the return spring with a high-speed return spring from sarco inc.

    I see that you have the problem of feeding FMJ nearly sorted out. The trouble seems to be the hollow points. Well what can be said about this, the weapon was only intended to fire FMJ originally. All of the value of an endeavor such as this lies in achieving successful feeding of a variety of hollowpoint ammunition. That is the strength of the .357 magnum round, especially in carbines -- the terminal effect is devastating! Also don't forget to include an adjustment mechanism to the gas system so that economical .38 special rounds can be utilized.

    • @HerbertWerle
      @HerbertWerle 6 лет назад +2

      Hi, you are a gunsmith the only thing you need is a lathe a milling machine, a few reamers and a chamber reamer in .300 Win. Mag. and of course the IMI Magazine in the cal. 357 Mag. First you have to cut the original M1 carbine barrel 3 cm in front of the gas piston, put the barrel in the lathe and ream it out from 30 carbine with the .300 Win Mag. reamer as deep as possible. Then ream it out step by step to a diameter of of 14 mm. Now cut the barrel once more exactly at the first step on the barrel. Turn the barrel around and put the treads now in the lathe, ream it now also with the .300 Win Mag chamber reamer then once mor step by step to the same diameter of 14 mm. Now you have to make an insert barrel with the rear diameter of 14 mm and push it in. Open the bolt face in the same diameter of the .357 mag. rim(milling machine) and cut the now the protruding rim of the bolt face 1.6 mm back (left over the thickness of the 357 Mag rim). Now you have to cut a small amount of material (1.6 mm deep) from the back of the barrel for the extractor from 12 o' clock to three o' clock. When everything is done and you have checked it all glue or soft solder the barrel in but take care for the right glue that you a able to remove the barrel if needed. Don't forget the gashole in a diameter of 2.4 mm!
      In case you will have more questions - please let me know.

      @@drcelsius I've been looking at this conversion, I think it would be easier(if you are a gunsmith) to get a .357 barrel blank, cut the threads for the receiver end of the barrel, then weld the gas/piston block in the proper location. I picked up a .357 timber wolf barrel from either Sarco, or Numrich arms for a song along with a bunch of .30 carbine demilled barrel stubs for their gas/piston blocks. Although, if you look at the Universal Ferret carbine(chambered in .256 win Mag) they have their own unique gas/piston block.

    Cool work man but why would you use .357 mag? It seems like an expensive way to get less power out of the M1, I get 9mm since its cheeper than 30 carbine but 357 aint cheep and has a noticeable dip in muzzle energy. Just my thoughts though, definitely cool none the less

      You may think not but numbers do. You're getting at least 300fps slower even out of the longer barrel one is a pistol cartridge the other has more in line with a low power intermediate cartridge. And like i said, price is still a pain with this set up

    • @a.t6066
      @a.t6066 6 лет назад

    • @commonsenseless9894
      @commonsenseless9894 6 лет назад

      @JeSSEbism No no it can't. If you loaded 30-30 with as little powder as possible to get it out of the barrel then sure 357 is more powerful. 30-30 can have a 150 grain bullet with a velocity of two and a half thousand feet per second and 357 can have a 158 grain going over 1000 fps slower. You couldn't have said anything more wrong unless you said the moon was made of cheese. 30 carbine is a slightly lighter bullet going much faster than 357. There's a reason people debate whether it's an intermediate cartridge or not and don't with the 357

    Why not just do a 10MM ACP M1 Carbine and save yourself the trouble? The M1 Carbine was partially inspired by the Winchester m1907 in .351 Winchester, the round which was the inspiration of the .30 Carbine. That round has approximately the same power as a .357 Magnum. The Winchester M1907 was used by Entente Air Crews in WWI. The French liked it.
