I really love this march I started playing this when I was in elementary. My band instructor and owner of the band I played with transposed this from listening to the cassette tape that his daughter brought home from Germany. Our band still plays classical music back home in the Philippines. And just recently they bagged the first place in a competition at the NAMCYA National Music Competitions for Young Artists. Youth symponic band category.
Yes, I know. I've played and conducted this piece quite a number of times. This performance is just a tad too brisk for my liking. As a French horn player, it was one of the few marches that allowed us to really shine. So, I kinda like to make it last, LOL. And, the Trio lays in a key that "permits" the horn player to use all of his valves, LOL.
Look at the old footage of people all over the world looking up with awe and joy at the giant airships flying overhead. An engineering marvel, yes, but the Zeppelins meant more than that, especially to the German people as a symbol of triumph and progress amidst chaos. They really were something special...
ja ist schon ü 100 jahre alt und wird aber sehr selten gespielt . der badeweiler ist auch ein schöner marsch wird aber immer mit hitler in verbindung gebracht
Aямiταge Hυχ Yeah, but to have experienced one of the old Zeppelins passing overhead, its shadow darkening several blocks of a city...that would have been something! The sheer size of the Graf, the Hindenburg, even the Akron or the R33-class...astounding.
As I listened while having my dinner, the piece was most enjoyable!I was waiting for more. Hated to hear it's end. I'll just listen again later. The Zeppelins were quite the state of the art at the time. Dumb dirty ole lightning struck and ended that!
Mary Cavender Not lightning, but the usual US restrictions on using instead of hydrogen caused the AVOIDABLE disaster. Hope the Us can now enjoy its high rates of Covid-19 and remain sequestered as it has done to its European counterparts so many, many times before!
@@annatamparow4917 Not really. All the big helium-filled Airships crashed as well, best known the american ones Akron and Macon. Rigid airships are just too fragile for their size. Weather will break them easily.
" Ladies and gentlemen the Hindenberg has now cut her engines and the I can see the ballast being emptied . She has just completed her Atlantic crossing and I can see the passengers at the windows. Her vastness is a sight to behold truly a modern wonder rivaling that of any other age!"
You actually still can fly with a Zeppelin! If you ever visit Germany make sure to go to Friedrichshafen in Baden-Würtemberg, where you can still fly with one of those zeppelins!!
It's one of my fondest wishes to travel to Germany, see the Zeppelin museum, and take a ride. I have learned to play a mournful version of this march on the harmonica and would like to play it for the remains of the DLZ-126 as a funeral dirge. Damn that Goebbels for ordering her scrapped!
Story goes Tieke (a member of the town military band) handed his town military band director this march that he (Tieke) composed for approval & comment. The town military band leader told him (in so many words) "keep your day job." Today, no one remembers that town military band director's name.

I can't believe nobody in this comment section has talked about the beautiful euphonium solo at 1:47
Thats sad
It’s like the icing on the cake it’s soooo gooodd
I know right. It’s my favorite part of the song, gives me chills every time.
Just imagining a Zeppelin traveling through the night while having that solo.
Totalement d acor
A more majestic and lyrical march was never penned. The Trio section is a masterpiece.
robinbobilink Are you perhaps, referring to the section that begins at 1:46 and runs through 2:19 ?

Robin Blankenship I'm a horn player too and my band is going to be playing this for a summer concert. Can't wait!
We played this march, as well as Alte Kamaraden, in our high school band many times. Hearing brings back fond memories.

I really missed those flying behemoths of the sky... But now, they are tour blimps and sports kinda stuff...

This march is massive, yet delightfully buoyant. Perfect!
Actually it was a great invention (the 737 of its time.) And I just saw the Goodyear " blimp" around my neighborhood today.

It is like taking a train or a cruise ship: slower, but much more luxurious and higher-class.
I love the echo at the end of all your videos.

Beautiful!
1885 als Kürtitel bei den Nachwuchsspielmannszügen gespielt. Wiederholung Trio mit 4 Stimme...megaaa

Teike is rightly considered ''The German Sousa''.

That and duxdemontis has gone to the trouble of putting together all the photographs and paintings :)
I prefer the recording uploaded by zzahier, but I am favouriting this one because it doesn't have a Nazi flag.
Superbe !

and MUCH slower
Rigid airships operate much better on helium, as the Germans found out with The Hindenburg. Yes, I'm aware the USA refused to sell them helium.
Too slow and pompous. The Coldstream Guards make a real march of it. Compare them !
