how do you "find that out"? you find out it's very nonsensical to believe it, but you don't turn over a rock or page in a book to "find out" there isn't a god.
This is the most Hitchens interview I've ever seen. Totally captures the mans prowess and oration. If anything this is the quintessential Hitchens. Thank you for posting.
First of all, how can anyone give this a thumbs down and more importantly this is one of the best interviews I’ve ever seen about anything ever. This is a brilliant history lesson by a brilliant man. And finally, Christopher looks so handsome in this interview, if I might say so.
He did quit for quite sometime but started again when he was writing his memoirs. If you noticed, he is smoking filtered cigarettes, a departure from his usual unfiltered.
+V I think in an interview with Paxman he was asked if he had to do it all again if he wouldn't smoke or drink as much and Hitch said he would have done everything the same.
+V Besides, didn't we just learn that most, something approaching 80% of all cancers studied through two decades of Genetic research were just cells screwing up their dividing action? If I recall, we know that only 15% of the cases studied ended up having direct causes linked with lifestyle or chemicals present in the persons environment? Half of us will die of it, we know that for sure.
I have to say as a student of only 21 years who has discovered Hitchens more than a decade after his untimely death, I truly feel that we need Christopher now more than ever and that it is our privilege and also our duty to prolong his life by sharing his teachings and aspire to his vision of a dictatorship-free world be it through religious means or not.
Thanks for posting. This has helped me to understand why Christopher had such animosity towards George Galloway and why he was pro invading Iraq. Invaluable.
good interview.Hitch is not an easy man to interview but this is great.Still miss him greatly. We have never been able to replace him & I doubt we will.
Questions in English below: 0:28 In ‘The Wyoming’ in Washington, lives Christopher Hitchens, one of the most important leftists in this country despite the fact that he is of British origin. According to local magazine ‘Washingtonian’ he is one of the most important thinkers of the city. According to ‘The Guardian’, which is a bastion of British leftism he is one of the most important thinkers of the century. Hitchens is a man of the left, he’s an ex-Marxist, an ex-Trotskyist , and as you will see he’ll say some crazy things about this point. Nonetheless, with regards to the war on terrorism he’s one of the toughest, one of the greatest - according to me - one of the most forceful ally of the Bush Doctrine. He sustains - and coined the term for - the idea that fundamentalist Islamic terrorists like Bin Laden are “islamofascists”, and therefore considers them in the same vein as Nazis and fascists. 2:48 You were the first to say that the fundamentalist Muslims are actually islamofascists. Is that so? 4:38 If it is one's duty to fight dictatorship and totalitarianism, can you explain why, in this case, the left abdicated from fulfilling its duty? 6:50 You have written very severely in opposition of the Peace Movement - saying that they are less pacifists and more warmongers who simply fight for the opposite front of the war issue. Can you explain this further? 11:34 There is something that I still find unclear - why does the European left fail to accept this reasoning of yours? George Orwell wrote what he wrote as a man of the left - and even you affirm that you’re a man of the left. 14:01 The extreme-right here in the United States calls you a neo-conservative… 16:29 Here in the US there was a liberal President, and in many EU countries, such as Italy, we had a leftist government. Given that framework, why was it still possible for a foreign country to be bombarded without any UN resolution? 18:06 During the events of September 11th 2001, I believe you were in Seattle, in Washington State as you had just been participating in a conference about another September 11th - the one of 1973 - the day of Pinochet’s infamous Chilean coup. During that conference you took one of those positions that us Europeans would define as somewhat anti-American. Come the morning of September 11th and you had completely changed your mind - how come? 22:54 Now I’d like to talk about your last book. You have written that Thomas Jefferson was the precursor of the Bush Doctrine. 29:23 What can we do to bring about this revolution without resorting to military means? 33:25 Do you believe in the typically American principle of the Manifest Destiny? 34:51 I believe you are writing a book discussing this theme - it is called 'God is not Great' and its subtitle is 'The Case Against Religion'. 37:05 In Europe there is a lot of concern about fundamental Christianity in America - Thomas Jefferson said that there must be a wall of separation between church and state. Do you think this Christian fundamentalism is a threat to American democracy? 39:10 In 2004 you said you would only vote with reference to one issue - islamofascism - which lead you to vote for the Bush administration. Who you would like to see now in the White House? (2008 Election) 42:06 What do you think of Oriana Fallaci? 43:44 You have spoken of Salman Rushdie and Martin Amis, but there is another of your friends Ian McEwan - what do you think of his novel ‘Saturday’? 46:54 I am from Sicily but I live in Milan. How come do you like Sicily so much? Sciascia is my intellectual hero. No he died in 1987. 47:47 What can I do, to me, Christopher Hitchens is very appealing. As you have seen, he’s a man very much of the Left, in all his facets - from his house, his look, the things he says. And then in the end, what he sustains most steadfastly is the idea of democratizing the Middle East and to give new life of opportunity to those peoples who are oppressed by dictatorship.
A wonderful find. Thank you for posting. This is a treasure. The shot where Hitch looks directly into the camera is masterful and hasn't been done before. Bravo! You have a rare film.
Christopher Hitchens in his optimal state: in his home enclosed by shelves of books, lit cigarette pinched between fingers and kissed by his lips, tackling the only questions worth asking and tackling. The amount of times I have watched this, you would not believe... But, the price to pay for watching these videos is the slight painful yearning for him to have led a healthier life, to have lived longer despite his constitution's refusal to signal the warning bell... Mr. Hitchens, your work- in print and in video- will live in our memories for decades to come!
Thank you very much for this wonderful interview Sg. Christian Rocca (grazie a lei) and to darallouche (wonderful moniker, btw franco-arabic for "disreputable house", very funny internet handle, Sir!).
i don't understand why people in the comments have been calling out the uploader about the video quality......like; how clear do you need to be able to tell he certainly "had a few" the night before, you can clearly see when he is talking and you can hear him...just...i don't know..shut up?
Lawrence Krauss said that Hitchens would have books everywhere on piles, they'd be sorted by category and any time he needed to check a book for something he'd just walk to a pile and pick the right book. He said that it was clear that Hitchens read those books repeatedly.
A fine way to practice your Italian…with one of the greatest orators of this English language of all time. (Note: this does require your reading Italian subtitles over his bleary-eyed morning-face, disheveled, smoking a cigarette, and slurping coffee. All while in a leather jacket. If that’s your type of thing then this indeed a super way to spend 49 minutes.)
9:33-11:35...a great Hitchslap of an individual not worth mentioning and many other great insights. As well, 38:35 ish..."The god hypothesis is not necessary, it's optional". Hitchens is missed.
I had no idea this video was available. Many thanks. It is great to hear Hitch anew even though he remiained faithful to his opinions and views. I note the walls are very bare in the apartment. That surprises me. I would have thought he would have a house filled with antiques for some reason.
Love all of the books on the floor as well as the full shelf on the wall. Though I have to wonder whose job it is to make sure that the dust bunnies from building up on that type of floor?
Christopher Hitchens reminds me of Peter Cook in one respect....I could sit and listen to the pair of them talk for hours, irrelevant of what they are talking about!
darallouche Your description says "Versione Inglese con sottotitoli in Italiano" which the google translates as "English version with subtitles in Italian" I'm about a minute in... and it seems to be "Versione Italiana senza sottotitoli." (Italian version *_without_* subtitles) EDIT: At about 3 minutes in, the interview starts, but the questions (in English) are quite hard to hear over the Italian dubbed translation, and only Hitchens' answers are "Versione Inglese con sottotitoli in Italiano" Perhaps you could add English annotations for the questions? Or at least change the description so people know what to expect? I was eager to see this, but am finding it difficult to watch, since I can't make out the questions... Just a thought. Grande sforzo nel tentativo di condividere questo con il mondo. Per quello, Grazie!
20:45 Very surprised the Hitch didn't mention Nicaragua here, US support for military fascism there and in all of Latin America still hurts the people to this day.
Nothing better than finding a Hitchens video you havent seen before...
other than finding out God isn't real
how do you "find that out"? you find out it's very nonsensical to believe it, but you don't turn over a rock or page in a book to "find out" there isn't a god.
The prophet Muhammad told me
Det Well, for me the moment I found I didnt believe this nonsense was equivalent of finding out god wasnt real. Whats the difference?
AtheistLobster thanks, dad!
I wish this man was still here to talk us through current events.
This is the most Hitchens interview I've ever seen. Totally captures the mans prowess and oration. If anything this is the quintessential Hitchens. Thank you for posting.
I second that. Where’s my lighter?
I’m on a Hitchens binge and I just found this🎁
He’s getting a lot right right now
First of all, how can anyone give this a thumbs down and more importantly this is one of the best interviews I’ve ever seen about anything ever. This is a brilliant history lesson by a brilliant man. And finally, Christopher looks so handsome in this interview, if I might say so.
If only shouting at the screen was a way to communicate back through time.... "QUIT SMOKING AND GO TO THE FUCKING DOCTOR!!"
Would it have made any difference? "All of life is a wager" - Hitchens

Christopher. He didn't like being called Chris 😊

good interview.Hitch is not an easy man to interview but this is great.Still miss him greatly. We have never been able to replace him & I doubt we will.
A Christopher Hitchens video i have not seen. Delightful! Thank you for the upload. ❤
Found this video on what would have been Hitch's 75th birthday ❤ forever remembered, with love and respect ⚘️ 13.04.1949 - 15.12.2011
Oh My Self ! i didn't realize there was anything by Hitch that i hadn't already watched 5 times, what an unexpected treat, thankyou!
This might be a good time to remind you that this interview exists. RIP Hitch 😢

Ah new Hitchens videos. Kerri them coming by whatever means necessary.
I'll bet Hitchens read every single one of those books

What's with the passive aggression haha.I was just hinting that indeed the man was one of the most intelligible speech person of our time.
Haha there are not really that many books in this. Im sure he has read a lot more than that. Or are you a troll?

Is Christopher Hitchens replacing Rich Evans?

wy not english subtitles for the questions? Lazy work
Max Steiner, why not hearing the questions as he spoke them in English and subtitles in in Italian?
