Population growth, squatter camps blamed for Mfuleni's rising murder stats

The Mfuleni police station recorded the highest number of murders in the country as reported in the third quarter crime statistics. Officials are blaming this to the growing population and an increase in informal settlements. Newzroom Afrka's Nasiphi Same has more.

Used to be such a chilled place, now it has overtaken the likes of Khayelitsha, Gugulethu, Nyanga, Langa

Another thing to take into consideration is that MFULENI POLICE STATION actually serves other areas aside from the actual Mfuleni Township. For example, Driftsands which is closer to Khayelitsha, and Wesbank which is closer to Delft. Wesbank obviously contributes because of Gang violence coz its a coloured township. It is these elements that contribute to the numbers, however Mfuleni itself, outside of Wesbank and Driftsands is actually a fairly chilled place.

Crazy stats nonetheless though. I have a family member who was Head of Detectives at Mfuleni, like a few months ago. Now happily retired, geez if he was still working he would've died from stress. All this police visibilty from this past weekend makes sense now. Scary stuff!
