It's so deliciously funny that this great lady -- so warm, intelligent, talented and convivial -- created one of her signature roles by playing a facilitator of cannibalism.
I can just imagine Sondheim pissing himself laughing at the songs in this show ha ha ha. Angela was perfect for the original Mrs Lovett she nailed it! it's probably my all time favourite
I remember reading that it was Sondheim who was really interested in doing "Sweeney Todd", and Prince who wasn't so sure. (On his opinion of Victorian theatre, Prince said, "Someone comes out in a stovepipe hat and I fall asleep.") I wonder which way it really was.
+animagusurreal What you read was correct. "Sweeney Todd" was one of the rare instances when Sondheim was the driving force behind the show, and he convinced Hal Prince to take it on (usually it was the other way around). So Lansbury has it backwards here.
I read that Patricia Routledge was offered it first and turned it down due to the topic. I have always loved Angela MAME Lansbury but thought Dame Patricia would have been brilliant. A Tony winner on her first Broadway musical DARLING OF THE DAY, she never got a big smash that her talent deserved.

And according to Bea Arthur, her long-time friend, she has a mouth like a long shoreman, LOL! :-) Love Angela Lansbury!

Happy 87th Birthday Miss Lansbury!

Yes I could definitely see her in that role. But she was too much of a prig. Thank goodness Angela wasn't.
ME TOO!
I’d love to see Angela’s and lens thoughts on the movie
