Your videos are helping distract us as we go through cancer treatment!! We’ve been watching your videos for years. Thank you thank you thank you for all that you do!!
I'mma be real. We built the ChickShaw 2.0 and absolutely HATE it. We're upgrading to just an 8x10 chainlink (but modified with hardware cloth and corrugated roof material) covered coop. The new coop is like 1/4 the cost. The ChickShaw was expensive, but it's 2 years old and it's already falling apart. It's difficult to clean, and the plans were difficult to follow. (the plans would swap between on center and on edge without documentation)
It was fun to see all the designs lined up and their differing uses! I feel like I am often in need of more space for more birds. ( chicken math, ya know 😂) so this was great. Thanks!
I've built everything but the meat shaw, and I live in town on a smallish lot! For those thinking adjustments need to be made, you're right. Any cook knows you can give someone a recipe and if they're good they'll end up changing it to make it their own 😊 The designs are great for Justin and his family and his circumstances, and may need to be adjusted for you, your family, and your circumstances. I ended up cutting the long box in half, using the part with nest boxes for my chickens in a small compost corner, and the other more open end for ducks around my yard (in a poultry net). Also, I'm in Idaho, and a descendant of the pioneers who walked here over 100 years ago pushing their hand carts, so "Chickshaw" didn't fit quite right. We call them our Hen Carts 😂. Don't blame Justin if you tweak the design, blame human nature 😉 The tweaking is where real homesteading innovation shines brightest!
Been using 3 chick shaws for my flock of approx 100 birds for the last year now. Overall excellent, BUT, one big flaw is the nest box situation. I get a lot of broken eggs and dirty eggs. I think the problem is that the nest boxes aren't mounted up high enough. According to Salatin, they need to be up higher than the chickens eye level. So, I think the chick shaw needs to be taller on the inside so the nest boxes are up another 6-12 inches off the floor of the chick shaw. I'm going to be experimenting with this once they are done for the season and back in the hoop house this fall. The other option would be to use some roll away nest boxes but that makes the chickshaw very expensive to add those.
I struggle with nesting boxes too. Mine want To sleep in them. I’m still trying to figure out a solution. I go away for the weekend often so it’s not always a good solution to just kick them out at night.
I did the chicshaw 5.0 build and added a solar auto door and a hengear roll away nesting box. I like the roll away nesting box but the Farm Lite door has been hit or miss.
thanks for posting these videos on your different build. Its really helpful for those of us that are just couple years in and still getting these things set up.
You know it doesn’t seem like that long ago, but the clip of you using the chickens to til the gardens and you still had your first pigs 🤣 I don’t even think Henry was born yet.. but time all runs together for me
So, chickshaw 5.0 needs a 6.0. The metal bar is too close to the front crossbeam for me. I'd also need wood framing that comes up higher, so basically two crossbeams in the front and that metal bar would be about 2 ft higher, or two places to slide that rod in so that both children and adults could push the thing. If I were walking with that thing I wouldn't like the angle you're pushing the coop at since an adult has to lift that bar a good 3 ft. up. I'd want to keep that closer to a 1 ft. lift for an adult. If that means the terrain can't have big bumps to navigate over then so bit it, but It would feel more natural pushing it along. So basically add about 1 - 1.5 ft. to the front of the main support beams to extend it out more from the coop which would also make it easier for an adult to be in that small area without feeling like they're going to get scratched or bump something, etc....., move the metal bar back then about 4" from the front beam with that extra space now, and then have wood framing to give a higher point to slide the bar in for an adult to push it
That's a good question... Best system I've seen for that is the one that guy from Sweden had - basically a greenhouse enclosure with a giant compost pile inside, which generated heat from the compost AND generated feed for the chickens. Always wanted to replicate that.
@@bobsaggit4571 I get it all you have to do is just skip that video if you are not interested instead of complaining and whinning about him selling stuff.thats all im saying

Hi.... Justin Rhodes and Rebecca thanks you for showing your video homestead chicken duck goose farmer garden 🐔🐓🐣🐤🍗🦆🐶 🐕🦮 🐈🐑🐄🐖🐷🐝 BYE 👋 bye 👋 bye 👋 bye 👋👍👍👍
I’m impatient for the book with ALL the plans!
What do you do in winter for keeping them from freezing?
What do you do in the winter for the layers?
@theJustinRhodesShow
How do you control snakes. We have 6'+ Black Rat snakes that are freaking out our chickens.
I've got sound.. Thank you for the info on the chicken coops!
Glad to help
How do you keep your chickens from digging holes along the fence?
It's an electric fence. They learn not to go near it.
How can you get plans to build these things do you have a book with all these plans in it that I can buy when I have the money
Shown on screen, you must have missed it, watch again.
I wish I could send pictures of what I have.
No need to be moving fence everytime .
Justin, how many times are you going to show off your chicken-shaws and electric fences on here?
As many times as he wants, it's his channel about his stuff. He should be proud and wants to help others, just not you. 😅
Exactly its his channel
@ripcord895 hey guy... it's chick season.... this is important for people raising chickens.

Would that actually work in Northern states that get to 40 below zero sometimes ?
