I am building a bocce court in my backyard which is currently grass. What type of base do you recommend under the tile?

I have researched what's needed to build a backyard bocce court and I do agree the UltraBaseSystem panels is a better option verses a concrete pad, what I disagree on is the cost and how this video makes it appear as if you can simply remove the top layer of sod and lay the fabric and then the panels. It's not that simple, because the flat surface will need to be built with plenty of 3/4 clear gravel or some form of good drainage rock to allow for proper drainage. I have priced it both ways, excavating the area, bringing in several loads of rock, drainage pipe, fabric and the UltraBase Panels, and then excavating, pouring a 4" concrete pad... It comes out to be about the same price either way... I would prefer to use the panels over concrete, but I'm not ready to pull the trigger until I see a price break.. They are just simply unaffordable. But i'm hoping within this calender year (2022) I can find these panels somewhere at a more affordable price, cause I'm really wanting to build a bocce court.

Use rubber horse stall mats or cow mats. Cheap heavy duty and easy to level

Also, how is the turf secured?

I like what I see and hear, but I’m concerned that you don’t mention water.
I hope to build a bocce ball court on a few acres we’re building on just a few miles from the Canadian border in the far north reaches of Idaho.
We’ll need to fence it to keep elk, deer and bears off it but that’s not your concern.
Water is. I’m wondering if French drains can be installed under your product?
