  • We get lots of questions and requests about practicing Suburi at home. In this informal video, Andy takes us through some things you need to keep in mind when doing so.
We are hoping to get more videos out, at a faster pace, but doing so means we will be producing more informal videos like this in addition to our usual Dojo-based instruction videos. Let us know what you think!

How to practice at home: Put a kendo show video, and do 20 suburi each time Andy says "OK" ^^.

even better, make it 40, and you'll improve twice as fast, OK? ;)

Thanks so much. The breakdown in the form of proper cuts is really appreciated.
My first (low rank) sensei taught me the exact "push cut" you disparaged and I'm so glad you highlighted it as being wrong. Now that I have experience in iaido I know that's not how you cut with a sword and I'm delighted to hear you encourage actual cutting technique in suburi.
    Ideas for future videos:
    1) Summarise the history of Kendo
    2) Examine the kenjutsu ryus which contributed to the techniques used in modern kendo today
    3) The differences between kendo pre and post world war 2
    4) cut some tatami mats using kendo cuts!
Thank you for your work and channel

To avoid hitting ceiling, I am using an Aikido bokken at my office, we have a fitness room with mirror (lucky me). At home, I will sit in seiza position or use furizen with footwork. Thank you Andy sensei for your video.

I have an indoor practice Shinai, but it only weighs 660g, only slightly heavier than my regular Shinai, it works very well for me.

Not exposing the armpits, is that because it's one of the areas that traditionally had no armor?
Or does it impact the actual stroke? Speed, power etc?

    • @jaketheasianguy3307
      @jaketheasianguy3307 4 года назад

The first reason. Exposing your armpit and left elbow out doesn't affect your speed and power, it's just bad form

I don't care if the pope made it, I still think it's trash ;)

I'd be very interested to be seeing the _pope_ making kendo equipment in the first place. I'm not sure if that's sort of scary, or awesome, or both.

Martial arts Sports in Schools and the National System
Britain, Australia and New Zealand are behind other countries as they generally have only private schools (and university clubs).
Japan, France and Eastern European countries are far stronger. (Judo for example)
As for selling lots of Kendo gear I would look at the national system.
