I love this dude. As a black men growing up without a father or male figure it’s a struggle to find myself and who I am. I’m homeless living in a car and just obtained my real estate license and is now working with Keller Williams. Thanks to my adopted fathers like Jocko Willink and David Goggins. I’m in the gym, flipping tires. Taking cold showers. I’ve cut rap music out I read 30 mins a day. It’s discouraging waking up in a parking lot every morning. But listening to these guys made me realize to develop myself I have to do things that suck. And ever since my confidence went up. I literally go to bed with a headphones in my ears with David Goggins or Jocko playing on repeat so they’re tough guy ways changes my core being subconsciously. Thank you 🙏🏾 😊 for being an example. I’m gonna get better
And by the way no drugs. I’m paying off $50000 and being homeless is a choice. My plan is become completely debt free within a year and half ATTITUDE CHECK

My Father was a POW in Korea for 2 and half years, 20 years later I was there ,and 30 years later my son. 3 generations. My dad was a little recalcitrant as a POW and was transferred to various POW CAMPS throughout North Korea. Eventually ending up in the Northern most POW camp. My Father's most favorite quote, " You have never lived until you have almost died, For those who fight for it, Life has a flavor the protected will never know." Dad died 4 Jan. 2009 at the Marion VA Medical Center nursing home. His nightmares finally ceased. Thank you and Your staff for your podcasts, and all that you've helped. Appreciate you. K9FFK9

Truthfully, unless a really special director was at the helm, it would just be another Hollywood over-glorification of violence. The human element is what's making this story what it is, not the violence. There is a reason Saving Private Ryan is one of a kind.

    Awesome!
On the subject of Project Delta. My uncle was with SF in Vietnam. After he passed, I received some plaques and his original jump wings and his flash off his beret. One of the plaques was from his time spent in Project Delta. Later on, I happened to be reading Hunting the Jackal by Billy Waugh and he spoke highly of my uncle in his book. I had no idea that my uncle spent so much time in MACV SOG. He only spoke of being in Vietnam by saying, I was there before it was “Vietnam” and I was there after it was “Vietnam.” Meaning he was there before the war and after it. He never spoke of it again and the only thing I could do, as a kid, was imagine what he did by looking at the army combat diver’s plaque, Project Delta plaque and other plaques I cannot remember on his walls. My mother told me he would come home on leave and he wouldn’t eat meat.

A buddy of mine from my days as an 11B who eventually became an infantry company commander had all of his leadership read the Task Force Smith chapter from the Max Hastings book The Korean War and summarize it. The lessons learned there hit hard and were hard learned. There was a top down breakdown in leadership that led to frantic and terror filled unorganized retreat. Imagine being a 19 year old PFC and seeing your battalion commander running past your machine gun position, his eyes wide as a horse in a barn fire, shouting "Every man for himself!" How do you not also lose your shit?

Jocko, I know you don't read this but the guy who read the message was Daniel Henry Giroux (Pronounced ji-roo) and he is my Grandfather who has been with Jesus for a long time now. His widow, My dear Grandmother Florence Margret Giroux passed on Sunday at my mother's house. And auto-play played this podcast in my shop this morning. So to hear you tell a story I'd heard many times as a child broke me down man. Thanks Jocko, God is good but I selfishly want them back.

Guy goes to Korea, his platoon endured the worst, gets promoted to master sergeant within 2 months, doesn’t get adequate support from the army, gets surrounded by the Chinese, endures 3 days of getting waves of Chinese, gets captured, endures years of being a POW while 30 American soldiers die a day, comes back home to re enlist and becomes an officer in the army special forces and goes to Vietnam, lays some foundation for modern spec ops that later jocko would learn..... goddamn!

The situation of the man in the latrine scene, when he realized that he had to make his mind his strength, is the same as when Jordan Peterson said that in the Gulag Archipelago, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, realized that he was partially responsible for the situation he was in, and he had some something, multiple things, in part, to cause him to end up in the situation he found himself in, within the camp. So he went over his life identifying every mistake he made, and thought about how he could possibly rectify those mistakes in the present. When you realize, that you aren't a victim, but also a partial perpetrator of your own suffering, and also the suffering of others, you realize that this complacency and weakness is only making your situation worse, and making other's situation worse. That is when you can start to right things and turn things around.

The really little thing that cued me into the idea that soldiering leads to a lower quality of cleanliness was once watching a soldier at a parade go out behind a tent and quickly rinse a spoon in some water on the ground behind the tend. Anyone would have not done that because they're used to maximum cleanliness. But I suppose one too many times caught without modern amenities and you'll end up preferring some water off the ground instead of nothing.

Working in a residential treatment facility I needed this reality check. The civilian mentality is a victim stance infestation. I will not allow my fear to control me. Thank you Jocko for your incredible content and by the way I am ordering this book along with the Bataan Death March. Back to the book.
