If you ever saw the Disney and Pixar animated film called 'UP: An Adventure in Heights', which tells the story of the journey of an old man and a child in a house that floats in the air through the Amazon, you could see mountains and rock formations as plateaus called tepuis. These mountainous structures date back to the Precambrian period and are the oldest on the planet, over 1.7 billion years old. They are isolated, in savannahs and areas of dense vegetation and tropical jungle, which are also the habitat of thousands of endemic species, which also have a unique evolutionary development as they are separated from other ecosystems.

That is one of the most beautiful places on Earth. Angel Falls in Venezuela. I has flown that water fall several times in my life time in my single engine Cessna and one doesn’t get tire of flying in that region. God bless that magnificent mountain.

I have been there Angel Falls year 2005. 3days 3nights boat trip, I still remember that. Slept a hammock under the Angel Falls, with a heavy rain that night. On the way back to town, we saw hundreds of waterfalls falling! !! Amazing !

3days 3nights boat trip, I still remember that. Slept a hammock under the Angel Falls, with a heavy rain that night. On the way back to town, we saw hundreds of waterfalls falling!

Three National Parks stand out in Venezuela: Canaima where Angel fall and tepuyes (huge flat mountain) are located as we seen.
Mérida, where Los Andes Mountains born and you can climb to the top of snowy peaks by an impressive long cable car.
Finally the journey can end in the paradisiacal beaches of Los Roques archipelago.

I’ve just thought of Venezuela like a living hell which lots of people were desperately eager to flee for , and wandering around the streets to look for food so far, never known this beautiful and pristine nature. Incredible period.

I look at things like this and I can't help but try to imagine what the ancient landscape used to be like. How raw and beautiful the land must have been during the cretaceous, how many plants/trees grew that would look alien to us now. Our glimpse of this planet only comes for about 70-100 years on average which is literally nothing on the true scale of the changes this planet has seen. What we have missed and will miss saddens me a bit.
Such a great insight! We are truly here for such a short time. I can't imagine what it must have looked like during the dinosaur times! Wild place! :)
You don't have to imagine it, when you watch the video you are seeing rock formations that are around 4,000 million years old and although the vegetation belongs to the current geological era, it is very likely that plant species from a long time ago will, and if you want To feel it, just visit the Canaima National Park.
@@josemora3854 It's a pretty logical theory actually that those rock formations in the video here are remnants of the Pangea collision when South America and Africa smashed into each other. They do indeed share similarities with the Scottish Highlands which we know were a mountain range during that era. This looks like the final stage of a mountain ranges life as they begin to break down. In fact, yeah, those are very likely the remnants of the Guiana Shield.

The ancient Tepuis of Venezuela (tabletop mountains) inspired key novels and movies. Here are 3 worth mentioning:
- ‘The Lost World’ the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Novel (1920) was inspired by the world’s strangest mountain "Mount Roraima". Conan Doyle also inspired Michael Crichton in his 1995 novel The Lost World, a sequel to Jurassic Park movies.
- "Up" the 2009 American computer-animated film produced by Pixar Animation Studios. Director Pete Docter made Venezuela the film's setting after Ralph Eggleston gave him a video of the Tepui mountains of Canaima National Park.
- "Dragonfly" is a 2002 film directed by Tom Shadyac. It starred Kevin Costner in the title role. In the movie plot the wiggly cross is the map symbol of a waterfall in the Canaima Mountains (Tepuis) Venezuela.
