    That is why I find it hard to give fertilizing advice because a lot of people already have effective methods. I should start saying if what you are doing works... stick with it. Each area seems to have its on needs for growing vegetables.

    Well...I guess I am just lucky or maybe it's the California weather cause I just burry banana peels, eggs and coffee grinds and water when slightly moist and so far I have lots of delicious, crunchy cucumbers. F.Y.I if you want to keep slugs away, coffee grinds is a good one to sprinkle around your garden. I also don't let the shallow leafs of the cucumbers stick around cause I guess those are the ones that cause the mildew to spread to the rest of the top leafs, which I guess makes sense. Let the leafs develop at the bottom before you cut them off though.

    To start off I am very new to gardening. First year trying to grow cucumbers. I have learned a lot from your videos so thank you. Having a bad infestation of pickleworms on my cucumber plants. Living in Florida I should have been more proactive with the neem oil spray. I have treated with neem twice over the past week. We have had a lot of rain so the effect was probably minimal. Have read about another natural pesticide bacillus thuringiensis. Was going to try it just wondering if I should scrap the 4 plants or if there is still hope for them.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  8 лет назад

      Well replant now next to them just as a back up or in cups. Bt is like Neem. It is worth shot. If the plants are small s chemical dust at night helps with infestations. Rinise dust off early am so pollinators dont get dust on them.

    I returned from a few days (3) and my vines are brown except for the newer end growth. The fruit looks bad - malformed and sparse despite all the blossoms. Is it too late to treat it with combination of Epsom Salts and soapy water as per your measurement. Earlier in the season I "lost" two squash plants. I have given three feedings of vegetable fertilizer over a couple of months. I enjoy this hobby and hope to cultivate and make some pickles!!

    Another great video Gary. I'm thinking of grinding up that triple 10 before I spread it so it goes around the plants. I have 44 plants. I just need to find the time to spread it when it isn't raining here !
    My first heirloom is finally turning ripe. Its a black Krim. I'm thinking of pulling it now while its half ripe. Do you pull yours when they get that way? I'm worried that all the rain is going to cause it to split.

    Gary....besides the side dressing of 10-10-10 and Epson salts do you fertilize your plants and how often. We do not fertilize at all and I think that is our down fall...thank you!

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  10 лет назад

      Dennis Homant So generally... Please dont feel mine is exact. But I prepare the planting hole with fertilizer. Most larger plants get side dressing 1x in June and July. And most plants get a water soluble fertilizer 1 or 2xs a month.
      I vary products based on what is available. But the bottom line is then need regular feedings. At least 1x monthly in my opinion for plants in the ground.

    Sadly it sounds like it is out for the count. Can you drop some new seed? Sometime that is the best route. With cooler weather coming the hot summer diseases that kill of cukes and zukes are no longer relevant.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  8 лет назад

      +recklessinPa You are a bit early. If they are at 4 weeks in cups, they have to get in the garden. But I would also start some more when you put them in. If theyget beat up or don't take off, just replace them when its warmer with your new transplants.

    I just added this side dressing to both my cucumber and pepper plants as my cucumber plants are starting to yellow. Does this also work well with tomatoes? Also, should I use a combination of the side dressing and a spray mix of epsom salt as well to green up my plants? Or just stick with one or the other? Thanks alot, your videos are really helpful.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  7 лет назад

      Side dress can take a while to get to the plant. A water soluble fert is best to use too if you have urgent yellowing issues. Epsom Salt can help but there is no nitrogen in that.

    • @justinj5288
      @justinj5288 7 лет назад

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  10 лет назад +1

      BarbaraL Lowell Usually I catch my brain cramps and put in an annotation. Either one works really,. Start with a teaspoon. You can slowly increase it to a tablespoon for harder bugs and stuff but dont go beyond that.
      If you have a pest problem now and want to try a tablespoon... just test spraya few leaves and wait 48 hours. Make sure there is no leaf damage. Its good practice with any spray you use for first time. Different plants, temperatures and sunlight have to be taken into account when you go to a tablespoon.

    Sometimes the flower dries up before the tomato forms.

  • @DR-zt9gs
    @DR-zt9gs 10 лет назад +1

    Gary, great video! You can also use diatomaceous earth, which is available at some garden stores and most pet stores in the fish department area. Spread as a light side dressing, this will keep pests down and doesn't hurt beneficial bugs or worms. It is a fine powder, so you don't need too much, just even distribution around base of vine and wherever it touches the ground.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  8 лет назад +3

      +Rosemary Barnett Different soaps vary. To be safe start with one or two teaspoons. If that seems to work your good. If it doesn't add another teaspoon or two.
      If you use a pure soap like Castille with no additives, you can use a tablespoon. Just don't exceed a tablespoon as too much soap burns leaves.

    Thanks for the videos, they have been very helpful. I am new at this. I went all out and have a pretty good sized container garden on my patio. All of my plants look good especially my potato plants. Any ways, I had some issues with my cucumbers. One plant started out growing well, it was flowering etc.. but was getting yellow and dried out. I finally got the courage to mix some of these homemade brews up. The soapy water to one gallon of water. The baking soda to one gallon of water. I treated my plants to the Epsom salt brew, that seemed to help a lot. Any ways, I sure hope that I didn't kill them! My cucumber plant is small and not so healthy looking so I figured, no guts no glory and sprayed it for the powdery mildew. I live in NC and yeah it gets pretty darn hot. I am hoping that I diagnosed my yellowing issues, spots etc.

      You can also try organic neem oil, 2 tbs per gallon of water with 6 to 8 tsp of hydrogen peroxide together. Spray undersides, tops of leaves and stems. Only spray at night as spraying when the sun is out can/will burn your plants. Hope that helps! It's worked wonders for my garden and I grow so many different plants.

    It's per gallon. So I would be careful not to put a teaspoon in of dish soap in a quart since its for a gallon. I would worry it might burn leaves. You could always test spray. 1 teaspoon per quart verses 1 tablespoon per gallon sounds right for baking soda.

      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  6 лет назад +1

      No it is just hard to control. I have switched to hydrogen peroxide. It seems to work better. Soap, neem and peppermint are more for insects. So BS is you mildew control. If it doesn't work, you want to try some new products.

    Hmmm. I woudnt grind it if you are doing liquid fertilizing. You want the side dressing to release slowly over the weeks. If you aren't liquid fertilizing then I think the pulverized version will help them out sooner rather than later.

    Yeah we are close enough temperature wise that powdery mildew comes. Baking soda does work. Just don't spray it in the sun.

    Yes.. side-dressing is just an addition. If you are really good at feeding it... you might not have to do a side-dressing every month. Your choice.

    I watched your video. You vegetable garden look healthy. The reason you have so many weed in you flowers along your fence is because the bed isnt that wide. The grasses and weeds along the edges often send under ground roots out that will invade your beds.
    The tomato doesn't look so bad. Do you know if it is a determinate or indeterminate tomato or tell me the name.
    The die off thats yellow doesnt look like disease. High heat days can do that. Just stick with your feedings.

    Hi Gary, I've got a small 1 litre (about 1 quart) hand sprayer. For a small garden will this do the job? Would adding 1 teaspoon of dish soap and 1 teaspoon of baking soda to 1 litre of water work as a one shot treatment? Enjoyed the video, very good explanation!
    Thanks

      So baking soda, and the right conditions can do that. First thing don't spray any more, 2nd thing give them a drink of water soluble fertilizer. 3rd thing, we have lots of time let for cukes drop some new seeds. The plant may just be fine with spots and new leaves will be okay.

    All my plants ,Tomatoes ect have gone a light yellow at the tips and the leaves looked to have shrivelled up.Could it be from making the baking soda mixture too strong??

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  10 лет назад

      31bevy It is possible but what was the ratio of soda to water. Sometimes spraying in full sun does that. The drops magnifying the sun. But it would be rare that the baking soda does it uniformly across all plants.

    Ok, I'll will leave on the vine. I put a lunch lady type of hairnet on it to keep the birds away. I bought a bunch of these hairnets to surround my ripening tomatoes from Amazon for really cheap. I haven't heard of anyone do this before but thought it might be a good idea. Birds love the darker color tomatoes and I used zip locks last year on my Cherokees but the hairnets are cheaper so I thought I'd give them a try.

      All my cucumber plants are almost close to being gone. I have planted two chillies in may and still there are no flowers coming except for leaves. Same case with tomatoes, planted in may and still no vegetables. I water them daily around evening or morning. The leaves of tomatoes, cucumber, chillies, watermelon plant are becoming black and yellow in the corners. Is it because of to much direct exposure to direct sunlight?.

    I looked at my cuke plant today and noticed a glaringly obvious infestation of powdery mildew. I used baking soda. Let's see what happens. Probably will require a repeated application. I'm not to concerned about losing the plant altogether though, since I already have had my fill of cukes and I can't seem to GIVE them away. The plant has from the beginning been infested with small, bright green leafhoppers and leafminers, but those haven't reduced the plant's vigor, so I ignore them.

  • @christschool
    @christschool 11 лет назад

    That was my thought. I'm not sure how long I will have with these cucumber plants because of the heat and humidity here in NC and I figure if I use your side dressing formula ground up as a side dressing, it might give some more vigor quicker to combat any bugs and mildew. I'm also going to use your baking soda and soap combination. I used a commercial fungicide a few weeks ago and it seemed to bleach the veins of the cukes for some reason. Very odd.

    Calmag is very expensive when comparing that to Epsom Salts and I think the return on your dollar is not worth the extra money you pay Calmag, but Gary might think differently. As far as I know, Epsom Salt is about as organic as it comes.

      miriam gutierrez Ive been using cold pressed neem oil. Search some of my videos. It is natural, organic and from the Neem Tree. It is great on chewing insects. The key is cold pressed. It has to have all its natural components. Azadirachtin is the key.

      Browning? If they are tiny it means they didnt get pollinated. If they are bigger and begin to brown that is usually a nutrient issue.

      The whole half of the plants are dying and turned brown from the bottom half. It's finally put out a cucumber today, but I think the plants are dead. I did put some 14-14-14 and tomato food few times a week. It did rained constantly non stop last week in FL, so in not sure if that's the cause. Should I continue spray baking soda? Or it's useless now?

    BY FAR THE BEST GARDENING SITE ON RUclips! THX GARY! A GREAT ALTERNATIVE TO REGULAR EPSOM SALT IS CALMAG+ BY GENERAL ORGANICS. I DON'T REPRESENT THEM BUT THEY SUPPOSEDLY SOURCE THEIR SALTS AND ALKALOIDS FROM ORGANIC SOURCES AND THE CALCIUM/MAGNESIUM IS AT A 5/1 RATIO WHICH I FIND MY CUC'S LOVE. GREAT VID AS ALWAYS!

    I have a lot of squirrels, crows and mocking birds. They love tomatoes. I also took your cedar shim idea for plant markers, put reflective plumber tape on them and tied them to the top of my trellis system with fishing line. The reflective shims constantly rotate which should scare the birds as well.
