Ughhhh why can’t we stay away from boring library books? I’ve gotten good at stopping at the 10% mark if I’m not feeling it, but that still adds up to lots of reading time and no finished books. I guess I’m just confirming that my instincts are okay? Because I’m mostly having good luck with the books I’m choosing to buy. I think it was easy to commit to staying away from new books at the end of the year, when releases always slow down!
Have you read The 90s by Chuck Klosterman? It’s a series of nonfiction essays, and it’s not about the things you might be expecting. It touched on a lot of things that I halfway remembered from back then and realized I never actually knew what was going on with them lol. I’m not a huge nonfiction reader but I enjoyed that one. Great video!!

YESSS okay this is something i feel like I am really struggling with is I am dnf'ing which is great because I can not waste any additional time on a book I am not enjoying, but then I am not finishing many books! Like I recently had a streak of maybe 4 dnf'd books which had me feeling hopeless. But then I finally found a 5 star!!! I think this year I may not have a single 1 star book because with the rate at which I am quitting books I should only finish things I am loving!
OHH I just added The 90s to my TBR, the 90s is my favorite decade of music and media, etc so I am already interested in this title haha!!! 🙌💗

Omg Sure, I’ll Join Your Cult is such a good title and I totally get not getting what you want from it! I also find it so hard to find humour in most things and it’s so hard if the book goes in that direction! I totally relate 😹😹 I love these mental health books! 💖💖

I normal feel the same way about Nonfiction, like their fine but doesn't unlock anything for me. I think the best one I've ever read was "I'm glad my mom died"
I want that shirt that is so cool!

I NEEEED to read "I'm glad my mom died" still, I seriously do not know why I have not made the time yet I know it is going to be amazing!!

  • @bornagainreader

Very tempted to give "Sure, I'll Join Your Cult". I'm the opposite where I _need_ humor in certain books. 😂 And I love a good memoir. It seems promising, even if it wasn't your fave, that you still gave it four stars.
And yeah, those nonfiction book titles sure are long, especially if they're self-help. 😵 Like, how about _help_ me get past the cover a little quicker, please?

10:25 ugh i feel like this is the worst part of self help books because you really have to sift through them to find the good ones. The likelihood of finding a bad one is way higher

YESSSSSSSSSSSSS OMG truer words I swear!!!! I actually JUST dnf'd one this morning called, The Confidence Map: Charting a Path from Chaos to Clarity by Peter Atwater. It was NOT giving what it needed to 😅

Bummer about Lord Edgware Dies. It's so odd how books within the same series can be amazing and then others are boring and uneventful. You did read a ton of nonfiction!!! Humor is so hard to write especially in nonfiction.

(I herein excuse you from feeling obligated to reply!)
I really enjoyed these reviews! I could relate to several. Your experience with "What Mother Won't Tell Me" is similar to my feelings when I read "Not Your Child" by Lis Angus earlier this month. The teenaged daughter was such a moron that it was almost a DNF for me. I just kept thinking of myself at her age (I think she was 12 or 13) and comparatively she was just so stupid. At her age, I was SO different, already working and pretty much a functioning adult for all intents and purposes, so I really couldn't sympathize at all.
I was happy to hear that you didn't dig the Poirot one. I feel like just because it's Agatha Christie I HAVE to like it. I actually just finished my first Agatha Christie book ("The Body in the Library") and was disappointed. It's a Miss Marple one. I found it to be too much work keeping track of the characters that the story itself left me a bit bored. I'll have to read more Agatha Christie and see if she gets better for me. I found it heavy on character development and light on scenery. I like to really sink into stories and get lost in visualizing everything, but when the author doesn't really give me anything to picture in my mind, I'm disappointed.
The Swedish death cleaning thing is something I've been learning about on RUclips. That, and minimalist living. I'm sentimental about books, photos, and my crafting supplies. Apart from that, I'm starting to get more and more interested in getting rid of crap. It's been 13 years since my mom died and I'm still sorting through her stuff. That's why the idea of Swedish death cleaning is SO great to me, because the LAST thing I want to do is leave a bunch of crap for people to sort through when I'm gone. I feel like a lot of my mom's stuff I have to keep because it meant something to her, even if it doesn't really mean anything to me, and I don't want anyone who cleans up after me to have that burden. I've been getting rid of what I can, but my husband is so sentimental that I have to sneak things out of the house when he's not looking. Also, my dad (we all live together - he's 93) was a Great Depression kid, so he feels like holding on to everything because of "just in case" or he might need it some day. Ugh.
"Sure I'll Joint Your Cult" is something I probably won't read. My undergrad degree is psychology and I used to work in a hospital locked psych unit, so I don't read those kinds of things or watch those kinds of movies/shows because it's frustrating when they get it wrong, or because it hits too close.
Anyhow, sorry to ramble, but your titles this time really resonated with me! Thanks for sharing! And it's a bit of a surprise to hear you're not big on humor! I would have guessed otherwise!

Thank you for your comment - I LOVE discussing books with you and what your thoughts are!!!
YES I find it SO hard to read a book when the main protagonist is making stupid decisions that I want to scream at them not to do!!! Like I know I am coming at it with my own life experience but ALSO like what you said I feel like at that age I was so much more aware!! I will definitely avoid "Not Your Child" by Lis Angus!!!
OH my GOSH okay, what you said about the Agatha Christie book you read, that you found it to be too much work keeping track of the characters, this is something I have struggled with in SO many of the AC books I have tried. Sometimes it feels like there are just SO many characters and they are not all different enough from one another or have well-defined unique characteristics that I can't keep track of everyone and by the time we get to the twist I am totally underwhelmed!
You are SO right that I feel she dosnt really develop a picture of "place" very much and instead focuses on adding a thousand characters for us to remember instead LOL. My TOP favorite AC books I have read so far are Death on the Nile, The ABC Murders, and Cards on the table! I just checked my Agatha shelf on goodreads and I have read/or dnf'd 19 of her books and these are the ones that have stood out to me the most! I want to do a video on this eventually but I want to read a few more from her first and some from the Miss Marple series which I havnt tried yet!
The swedish death cleaning I think is so important to do and to sort through our things and not pass that burden on to our family! I can see how hard it would be to get rid of your moms things, I would be sentimental about it too and just have such a hard time letting anything go!
My husband and I have been working on going through our closets and it has been SO freeing to declutter these clothes and things that we don't need. I also am going to be so much more conscious going forward about what I bring in!
WOW working in a hospital psych unit must have been a very challenging job but I am so interested, I think you must have experienced so much there!! But also I KNOW it must be frustrating reading books or watching movies that deal with mental health things because SO many times these are used as a plot twist or exaggerated to the point of being offensive or misinforming on certain diagnosis'!!!
Thank you for your awesome comment! I'm glad these reads resonated with you! Hope you are having a lovely week my friend!! 🌺🌸💌📚💗

Sure I'll join your cult is such a grabbing title, but kind of misleading. I would expect that she has experience in a cult. I may still give it a chance cause I do like humorous books.
