  • Justin Simien's Dear White People is a show about open dialogue and a multiplicity of views, and it sends the message that nothing about issues of racism and representation is simple or one-sided.

      @SCREENPRISM thanks for the video. The dialogue and cinematography on DWP the series was phenomenal and I'm glad you all did an analysis. I remember binge-watching it when it premiered earlier this year. It is a shame you have to put this disclaimer in the comments. I think people's inability to critically discuss race, art, and media speaks volumes about their maturity, but how far we have to go in the USA.

      @ScreenPrism. DWP won't affect anything. Take the latest Star Wars films. The black character of Finn doesn't get the coveted white goddess Rei. He's not good enough for her. And this film is creatively in control of a "woke" white woman.

    What I thought was the most valuable thing about the show is how they portray many different black experiences. Coco, Reggie, Lionel, and Sam have all had their outlooks shaped differently by their experiences and the show acknowledges that they're all valid and worth trying to understand. Non-black liberals and conservatives alike tend to attempt to place black people in boxes to suit their respective agendas. It's a shame that so many people who could benefit from watching the show probably never will.

    Great analysis! As black guy who went to a prestigious predominantly white institution in Massachusetts, I had a very similar experience with Winchester Finished season one and jumping into season 2. It's crazy, but in all my 22 years this little, unassuming Netflix show is probably the most relatable thing I've eve seen. With every character I COMPLETELY relate. Their flaws, their good side, the inner conflicts. It's amazing. So so glad they made this.

    everyone is so hung up on the shows name and doesn’t realize it’s not about white people doing horrible things the show is actually more about fighting within the black community. A lot of films paint all black people with the same brushstroke this doesn’t mean that they are all stereotypical necessarily but they usually all come from the same background and all have the same views. This talks about how black people often have differences in opinions on how they should deal with their oppression there’s always the Martin Luther King blacks and the Malcolm X blacks. Both are represented on the show and actually in the end you might be surprised over who wins. Also as a black woman i loved how they added in the dynamic about colorism which affects us so much. and guess who is mainly perpetuating colorism? black people not white yet it’s so detrimental. Basically Sam criticizes Coco for not being so militant but Coco tells her that because she’s light skin she gets away with being more militant because light skin/biracial women aren’t judged as harshly and when they do these things and don’t get to lose their femininity and desire which is so true! Sam the main character is also dating the white guy as you know and although she really likes him honestly doesn’t like that he’s white and doesn’t treat him well because of it so he leaves her rightfully. this show definitely holds black people accountable. don’t get so hung up on the name and actually watch it. i honestly think it could be an eye opener for a lot of non blacks people because a lot of you don’t know these things go on in our community

      but why did they have to name it like that, that's just what I don't understand. epically if it isn't about white people. not attacking I'm just curious. I honestly thought when I saw the title the series was going to shame all white people into a stereotype. i cant blame people who would think this at first glance. a latino, African American, asian etc would think the same way if it said "dear so and so"

    Dear White People is an incredible show and this review hit every single reason why. Getting to explore each character in more depth made the series even more illuminating than the movie could have ever achieved in a standard cinematic two hours. Even though I was already engrossed in the show and each character, I was not prepared to experience what happened to Reggie. SJW aside, I could never stand in his shoes, and this show did an amazing job of planting me squarely in the moment, which is as close as my blonde, female self is ever going to get. Simien's work is a revelation.

      It’s kinda crazy too, cause in isolation it’s a pretty innocuous sentence when you think about it. As another commenter pointed out out, the title could have been giving off the message “Dear white people, we love and adore you”. It’s not inherently hostile, but it’s interesting that’s what white people immediately jump to when they’re ever addressed as a whole.

    I feel like you're judging Gabe a bit too harshly in bad faith in relation to how the show actually handled him. It feels like you're projecting this idea that Simian used that character to show how ignorant white people can be, but I don't think that's necessarily the case in the show. Case in point: when Gabe shows up to the meeting after it's revealed that he made the phone call, both Coco and Troy defend his choice. While there's certainly ignorance on Gabe's part, the show doesn't condemn Gabe - as you're suggesting - for making the call. This point is vital because it shows up at the end as to why Gabe can't be with Sam anymore - because she condemned him with the others instead of taking the leap into understanding his point of view (like Coco and Troy did immediately).

It is honestly one of my favorite shows I've ever seen in my life and I don't make statements like that often. I think controversial topics like this always do. I do consider this show to be racist mainly from its title, as I judge it on basis of if you changed that to "Dear Black people" it would be considered a racist show. I do not subscribe to the concept that one rule for one group and another for the other. I subscribe to everyone being treated equally and not talked down to or forcing others to accept blame for something they have not personally done. Classing white people as a group, as this show does feel ignorant and doing the exact same thing to white people as black people are asking not to be done to them, judging them by their skin colour.

      50% minorities complaining about things that get printed on a daily basis and don't actually exist when you research the nonsense SJW story the media reported on 99% of the time.
      And
      50% White people like me "feeling unheard" as we're the ones being discriminated against on film, along with Black people, while Asians are massively overrepresented by 2.6%
      Along with White people like me "feeling unheard" as we're the ones who apply for 1000's and 1000's of jobs with no reply, yet Black and Asian people seem to get and switch jobs for fun with no problems.
      Where's this White privilege people keep talking about?
      Why do we get accused of being racist/sexist/homophobic if we don't like someone who is Black/female/gay for a reason that has nothing to do with race/gender/orientation?
      Why are the poorest people in my city all White?

      I'm sorry to hear about your personal experience Daniel. I'm sure it's tough and I can appreciate your perspective. Thank you for sharing!
      I would never invalidate another's story simply because I'm not in their shoes to fully understand their plight. To say something doesn't exist for a people is unfair as one that is not of that race, or gender--which is part of the problem, invalidation of another's experience just because I haven't personally seen it, been a part of it, or experienced it. What you say must be real for you and I would be wrong to dismiss your story as something isolated to only you as your individual problem. We're all in this together, but only those who truly want change and equality are open to SEEING and accepting that we are ALL in the same boat, we just got here different ways. :) They (the powers that be) want us to fight among one another over 'race' that way we are distracted by the real problem--class! If they can keep us stupid and fighting each other, we will never rise up against them! Try to see that! That's what is meant by 'staying woke' or 'waking up'. It's not only a phrase meant to be understood by minorities, but all those who are willing to shed their anger long enough to see where it needs to be focused. :)
      My initial message was not about race, it was about those who feel unheard--the poor, the disenfranchised, and the dis-empowered. But since you addressed race, allow me to do the same. Again I say, you are not alone. I have many minority friends who are experienced, educated, and who are currently having trouble finding employment (some for over a year.) All stories are valid and should be heard equally and without judgement. Try to keep your head up and be positive for only positivity will attract that of it's kind. Your situation will/can change but it depends on you and how YOU look at your circumstances and what you do when opportunity comes your way. A smart person realizes that bitterness and anger never allow one to see the path towards success clearly. Your next gig may not be where you are currently looking. But if you keep paying attention to the noise or what's going on beside you, you can't see what's right in front of you.

    This movie is a really good one and I got a bigger perspective on Racism and the different effects it has on everyone but I can't ignore how badly depicted Rashid is. He is a Kenyan whose accent isn't anything close to a Kenyan accent. He walks about close to clueless about racism and seems not to exactly understand the aspect of racism. They depicted Africans as people who still don't know much about racism which is not true. There is so much that could have been told about the African perspective of Racism other than what they did. I just think it's sad that Africa is always trying to get its true story heard by the western world and not even the people that sometimes claim to have origins from Africa can try to tell it correctly or at least get the freaking accent right.

    I refuse to accept that Gabe was in any way to blame for that cop pulling a gun on Reggie. When someone called the cops to break up the blackface party at the beginning of the series, nothing even remotely like that happened. The idea that anyone shouldn't trust the police is toxic. If the police aren't doing their job then they should be held accountable. Gabe did the right thing and so did everyone, after the event, who protested to get repercussions for the cop.

    The problem with the show (yes, I'm black, so don't freak out) is that the people behind it, the director, writers and main actress, are fundamentally racist towards white people and refuse to accept that fact. Here's one example (based on an interview the creators and actors themselves made).
    They claim that a 'minority' (Black, Hispanic, Asian, etc) cannot be racist to a 'majority' (White), since the minority can never have the same amount of 'privilege' in a social system as the majority since the system is built by this majority. This is a blatantly immoral excuse to paint whatever hate a minority person may have toward another race (always white in this example) as something that isn't that bad. How so? Someone who is labelled 'racist' is viewed as unredeemable, but not so with someone who is prejudice. The writers and directors of Dear White People don't want to be viewed that way.
    The bottom line is that hate is hate, and hate is inexcusable. If you are a 'minority' and endlessly put down people of another race, majority or not, I don't want to hear anything of what you have to say.

    • @sheelaflower
      @sheelaflower 6 лет назад +21

      I saw that interview (mixed race kid here) and while that may just be my personal interpretation, I think that this statement was not meant for the individual, but for the group. The Hispanic minority cannot be racist towards the white majority, because everywhere they go, they whites have the privilege. That does not mean that a single Hispanic person is incapable of being racist. A Hispanic who says all black are thugs and all white people are assholes is as racist as a white guy saying that all Hispanics are drug dealers. But in the society we live in, the most racist, asshole-ish white guy has more chances at pretty much everything than the nicest, gentlest, most hardworking Hispanic. These things make it impossible for the minority group to be racist towards the majority group, because the majority group is always the one favored in every aspect of life.
      Again, that was my interpretation of that part of the interview. I might be wrong about what they meant to say, but if I'm not then what they were saying is pretty much true :/

    I heard this show does show all sides, but I just couldn't get past the first episode, Sam was just unbearable. She had no personality except for her 1 sided views on race, they could have at least made her likable before portrating her as a pretentious spoiled college kid who has no actual real world experience. She was so offputting. The whole show seems like a racial issues circle jerk from one perspective. I don't know, I couldn't get passed the first episode, that's a writing issue, don't start the show with a character who is meant to be antagonistic, you ease the viewer into it and when they're invested lay the guilt on them

    • @karmicobsession1636
      @karmicobsession1636 6 лет назад +21

      Well you should watch past the first episode. The first episode is about Sam and yea she isn't suppose to be likable in my opinon. None of the characters are except maybe Lionel. The rest of the episodes are about various characters who don't feel the same way Sam does. Also I think people are taking the show way too seriously, it's satire, which i know is hard for some people to get which I think is the problem. But I think people not getting what is or is not satire within the series shows that the writing needs work and it says alot about the people watching.

      You expect character growth in less than an episode? How can you see all sides of you can't make it past the first episode. The show does show all sides whether they are likeable or not. That's the point. Just like in real life where you can't swallow every person's values or personalities, the show is full of multifaceted people whom you probably won't agree with but should see because their perspective is just as valid.

      Crazelord91 I think that’s what the show WANTS you to feel. It wants you to feel like Sam (even though some points she make are right) is too much of a rebel, too stubborn, and too eager to argue, and the other character address this throughout the series. Even she herself admits it at one point. It wants to show that at time, Sam can be her own worst enemy.
