¿The güero capitol of Mexico? This is what I found in TEPATITLÁN

  • Is Tepatitlán the güero capitol of Mexico? Is Tepa a town or a city? I found a lot of cool things including huipiles, piñatas, traditional sweets and very friendly people eager to show me their corner of Mexico. I enjoyed this random Mexican town. I hope you do too!

    Oh, the memories! I spent my teenage years there in the mid-1990s. The last time I was there was in 2016, who knows when I'll be back. Thank you for making this video and taking me back to Tepa, where my parents still live. I would say Tepa is in between being a town and being a city. However, if you ask people from Guadalajara, they would definitely say it is a "pueblo"! :D And yes, you do look like a local. :)

    Hi, I’m here to answer the saltine question. It’s very popular in seafood restaurants! People will usually put mayo on the saltine cracker or tostada and then put some sort of ceviche or seafood item on top. So yummy, miss my hometown 😍

    Thanks for the video. Is actually a city. The reason why you don’t see a lot’s of GUEROS is because now you have lots of outsiders NOT from Tepatitlán. But if you go to other small towns in that region you will see more white people and tall.

    Hola buenas tardes! I just saw your video. Tepatitlán is a city with a mentality of a town. People here are known as Tepatitlenses. I wouldn’t classify Tepa as the capital of the güeros because within the last decades a whole lot of people from the southern states of Mexico have migrated to this city. Including me from the United States. Although the whole region of Los Altos were settled by the French and Spanish, therefore many towns in the region the güeros are visible. An interesting time to visit Tepa is in late April when the Fiestas del Sr de la Misericordia are held. Hope this answers your questions. Have a great day.

    Tepa is a small city with a small town vibe. People from Tepatitlan are referred to as “Tepatitlenses” or “Alteños”. There’s a few songs dedicated to Tepa such as “Las Alteñitas” and “Esos Altos de Jalisco” there are a lot of light skin complexion people, but the town has grown exponentially within the last few years where there are now more outsiders due to the big Agriculture and Game. Once it’s permitted and if you’re up to visit some good Fiestas the ones in Tepa are some of the best by far! It is internationally to where I’ve seen many different ethnicities make it out to see what Tepatitlan has to offer

    Hello! Just came across your video and enjoyed it very much. Both of my parents are from Tepa and it is a great place to visit. Tepa has had a huge influx of people moving here from all over the country so most people who live there now are not true locals. My understanding is that the whole region of “Los Altos” has many lighter skinned Mexicans. I hope you return to do another tour and maybe you can meet with someone who might have more history to share with you. Hope you stay safe right now.

    I never knew who my great-grandfather was, because he was married to another woman when my grandpa was born, but I did a DNA test and it said I was part Spanish, part indigenous Mexican. I was shocked because I look so white! Well, I was connected with a second cousin who also took a DNA test (a grandson from his first family) and found out he was from Tepa... I don't know why people say that ALL people are Gueros in Los Altos. It just the ratio is a little higher than other areas in Mexico. But it happens in several places, like Sonora or even in Guadalajara. If you go to Puerta d Hierro or Colinas d S Javier, or CDMX in Santa Fe, Pedregal, etc. or Monterrey in San Pedro Garza Garcia. Because most of the rich people in Mexico are white. When the Europeans arrived they took control of the land and resources with the forced complicity of some indigenous liders (caciques) that they also got rich and pass their rich state to their next generations.

      Read a little History, no French ancestry in Los Altos, people were mostly white and blond because the Spanish settlers in Los Altos De Jalisco were descendants of the Suevi and the Celts in Northwestern Spain. Do a little research on the Suevi Kingdom and the Celts in Galicia, Spain. No French surnames in the Los Altos region, only Spanish.

    @alvarotorres7425 3 года назад

    Thanks for sharing a bit of my hometown. I’d like to confirm ur comment about city expansion sizes. The city has it tittle since 1883. It’s a small city near to a big one which absorbs Tepatitlenses and also there’s a high migration to US since “braseros” time. Around 1950’s the region start becoming popular in Mexico, then the 70’s worldwide economic boom turn it pretty much in what u have seen. There where no French population, there are no last names or any cultural habit remaining from French culture, what I’m so sure that as conservative the living is in, the habits and names for sure will be shown. The indigenous population was very affected by diseases and many lives were lost, around 80%, turning Spanish colonizers into the mayor population in the area and making them work hard cause there where not people to slavery. The imaginarium about blonde people is bigger than reality, what is true is that people in the area is lighter skin than the regular, and as well, from the imaginarium about Mexicans darks skin. We’re Mexican and that means a mix, mainly by Spanish people and the many local cultures by the time. The salty cr$&@ at the Mercado is for sea food, to pair “coctel de camarones” is like a cold shrimps broth, could be octopus and clams, it’s really good and fresh for hangover, I believe is a Sinaloa. Sea food is not very friend of tortillas around there. Keep exploring México, it’s fun! Good luck

    • @Hon450crf
      @Hon450crf 2 года назад

      This is my hometown as well. The loss of indigenous population was actually much greater, according to some historians in the region. The Mixtón War left 1/5th of the indigenous population. The European diseases left 1/5th of the 1/5th that remained. So only about 4% of the indigenous population survived. For centuries, the same families from Spain that arrived in Los Altos remained in the region. They often would marry cousins together in order to keep wealth within the family, which led to high infantile death rates, down syndrome, and a recently discovered variant of Alzheimer's disease that is unique to the region. Because the region was populated mostly by the same colonial families for centuries, the people of the region did tend to look predominantly European up until maybe 30 years ago, when many outsiders from other parts of Mexico began moving to the region due to it having one of the better economies in México. the demographic is incredibly different there now than it was when I was a kid, not to mention when compared to my parent's time. Unfortunately, the mix of outsiders and a desire to "Americanize" everything has caused many of our traditions to dwindle, especially in the bigger 'cities' like Tepatitlán. Many of the smaller towns in the region still hang on to those traditions. As mentioned before, there were alot more güeros before the rush of outsiders, but the majority of the Spanish colonizers were from Andalucía, which was conquered by the vandals which were anglo, and later ruled by the Moors (Arabs of North Africa) who also brought slaves from Greece and italy. There were some spaniards from other regions, like the basque region and Galicia. But again, because most were Andalusian, it was not uncommon to see families with children who were blonde with blue or green eyes, and also children that were darker with brown, blue, or green eyes and dark hair, all from the same two parents. Two parents of darker skin tone and brown eyes and black hair could have a child with blonde hair and blue eyes due to genetics, and we still see it today. Also, one must never deny that we are proudly Mexican, and thus still have indigenous DNA in us, however minimal it may be. We still get most of our food, music, culture, and traditions from the mestizaje that occurred in Mexico. So, while traditional Alteños tend to be of mostly European genealogy with varying degrees of indigenous ancestry, we are genetic mutts if you consider the diversity of Andalucía. As far as the French ancestry goes, I read that there isn't much historical evidence of that in the region. There was a garrison of French soldiers stationed in Tepatitlán during the invasion and occupation in the mid 1800s, but many of those were said to be soldiers brought in from France's colonies and likely weren't actually from France. That being said, my paternal last name is Ruezga, which is French Basque. While Ruesga with an "S" is from El Valle De Ruesga, a region bordering the Basque region in Spain. My other last names are Garcia González Paredes, all of which are clearly Spanish. Going further back, I am also De La Mora, Lozano, Alcalá, Gutierrez, Martín... My wife, who is from the nearby town of Jalostotitlán, is a blue-eyed, blonde haired güera whose family has been traced back to the Basque region of Spain. But like many Alteño families, she has blond siblings with blue and brown eyes and brunette siblings with brown eyes, and neither of her parents have blue or green eyes. Any way, it's a long comment but I am always happy and proud to speak about my region. Thank you for your video!

      According to the 2010 Census by INEGI,[2] the municipality has a population of 625,123, of which 304,377 live within the city limits of the municipal seat, Tepatitlán, and the rest in the outlying communities and ranches. The city is the state's seventh-largest incorporated community and serves as a significant city outside of the capital, providing the most important university in the region of Los Altos, and an important economic and business center. Around 81% of the population of the municipality is urban, concentrated mostly in the municipal seat, and other large towns. The annual growth rate is at about 18.9%, placing it among the fastest growing populations in the state of Jalisco.

    In Mexico people don’t really pay attention to skin color. That’s an American thing. People classify each other as Mexican and that’s where it ends . If they’re born there, they’re Mexican. I only say this because I noticed you actually acknowledged the skin tone of people and the woman in the painting. I encourage you to look past skin tone and think of all Mexicans as just that, Mexicans. Not “white Mexicans” or “indigenous Mexicans” they are all mixed. I think it’s actually rude and that’s why I disliked your video because why go into detail about someone’s skin? It’s 2021 I thought we were PAst that. They all share the same language and culture.

      Because they exist...just how black Mexicans exist but somehow people only care about the white boring looking ones. My parents are from jalostotitlan where there are many blonde mexicans and pale mexicans with more european phenotypes. I don't see the big fuss people make about them though. There are also indigenous people there but an overwhelming population look like me or lighter. Nothing special I would say 💁. Maybe because indigenous features are far more appealing to me.

    Never actually been to Tepa. In Latin America, people bear their mother's maiden name. So they basically have "two last names." So my second last name is actually Ontiveros. It's quite rare (at least in Jalisco). I didn't know this last name is spelled "Hontiveros" in Spain. Very interesting. 👍
