Wood Turning Oak & Resin || The ROCK Bowl 🤬
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 13 сен 2024
- Come and watch the adventure of turning an oak root ball that was filled with epoxy resin. It held many surprises the deep I got into shaping and hollowing the bowl which lead to me turning down quite a few rocks that were held in place by the epoxy resin.
But the real star of the show was definitely the casting resin. Incredible Solutions Pourable Plastic casting resin did an amazing job and turned very well. I would highly recommend to anyone thinking of getting into resin turning!

Brad, hope all is well brother. Just a couple of things for ya. 1st thanks from all of us for what you have done for Kim. We ordered a couple of units and passed the word on to the club. We are probably going to ship her down a care package of bowls and things to let her auction off for some cash also. Right now every little bit will help. 2nd I was scrolling channels last night and stumbled across a channel that has this video on his channel. Edited and renamed with no credit to you. Just thought you should know. 5 days ago he had 2 videos that he had bootlegged. Yesterday it was 12. I can't find the channel today to alert the other guys. Flintswood or Mitos Tube out of Illinois City. Maybe it's legit but it didn't smell that way.
Thanks again

OMG!!.....That thing is Incredible!!
Thank u!
Beautiful

Whoa! You could not have gone with a better color. This is awesome.
It came out pretty nice. Have you seen my latest green, gold, black one? It my favorite
You were correct. An awesome bowl with beautiful color.
Thank you for swinging by
Oh my gosh...that is gorgeous! I love those beautiful resin colors!
Thank u!
Beautiful! Lots of oak here in Texas. An oak tree in a lot near me got felled by a storm last year. The city cut down the rest of the tree but left all the logs behind. Just recently a smart and enterprising person came by ad got the logs, for free.
One great part of turning is you dont have to pay for material. I could take a limb that fell in my yard and turn it into money within a day.
Awesome work! Having a rock in there really gives it character
Lol hell yea it does
That is absolutely stunning. The colors are awesome. Looks like it is on fire. Love the fact that you left the stone in it. Makes it more unique. Stay safe and healthy.
Thanks! Yes you really dont even notice it honestly
I believe this is the first time I have seen your channel. I just wanted to let you know that it was absolutely an awesome video! Totally cracked me up “I’m gonna sand this thing and you are going to watch it!“ That was awesome, I like your personality, very easy to watch and very entertaining. Thank you for sharing your hard work with us.
Ha! Well i appreciate that
The colours of the resin turned out beautifully, the contrast with the wood grain is excellent. Well done.👍
Thank you!

thumbs up just 4 that
Lol thanks
That is a fantastic looking bowl. Great choice of colors Awesome job !!. One Critique though. Dude wear a respirator when working with that casting resin /epoxy. That stuff is super bad for the lungs.
Oh i know, i have multiple fans blowing any fine dust away from me. Too hot for me to keep a respirator on
super tare

First time viewer and new subscriber here. I was just referred to your channel at the end on one of Duka Heritage's videos. Turning resin projects is like Silly String for adults.......I LOVE IT!!!!!!

@@RatedRWoodturning David Adamsen
@@silverlady1118 ahhhh yes.... big inspiration of mine. Love his channel!
Nice work Brad
Thanks
Good looking piece. Reminds me of Jupiter with the swirls.
Thanks! It kind of does
Very cool! I haven’t had any rocks yet but I did run across a nail once!
Ouch! Bet that hurt the tool lol
I like it! I am about to do a pecan resin bowl myself. We will see how it comes out.
Ill come check it out 👍
Looks great. I'm a newbie too. Less than a year. Great job. I have a midi lathe but going to a 18 36 soon
Nice! I wish i could afford something like that. This HF one is pretty terrible
Great work, Brad! That came out great! I have no experience turning resin, but I noticed that it looked like you sealed the oak before casting. Did I hallucinate? Probably a great way to make sure you don’t lose too much resin by soaking into the wood. Loved the color choices too!
You are correct i did seal it with resin mostly cuz i was concerned about any moisture left in the wood even though i microwaved it for 3 days lol... just make sure to scratch it up before the big pour if u try it. Thanks for watching
Very nice result! I've found the same thing with root balls though - lots of stones, rocks, etc. You can actually pulverize rock & use it as a filler too, though I tend to use soft stones for this. Only tools I have that will hold up to the abuse of turning stone inlay, whether intentional or inadvertent, are the home-made ones I've made over the years; expensive name-brand tools dull just as quick as the HF set. I don't care for carbide scrapers myself, though I have a few of them, and haven't tried them on stone.
What kind of homemade tools? HSS?
@@RatedRWoodturning Nope... a buddy of mine has a Bridgeport, so we put a ball mill in the end and milled a flute in some O1 round stock. Hardened them with his torch & I tempered them in my kitchen oven, then I put handles on them. (I've a video showing off the end result.) They keep an edge longer than any commercial tools I've tried. (Believe it or not, even better than the HSS cutter inserts I have for my Oland-style tools!)
The star of turning stone though is the leaf spring I turned into a scraper though... thing is absolutely massive and stays sharp while turning stone. I simply took an old leaf spring, chopped it up to form a tang, ground an edge on it, and turned a handle.
@@RealRuler2112 very cool. Ill check out ur channel
New sub here, sent by Duka Heritage. This bowl is amazing! Absolutely beautiful. Thanks for sharing your technique!
Thank you!
Awesome skills!
Thank you
Awesome Bowl Man, I can't wait to start turning epoxy. I like your style, thanks for subscribing to my channel.
Thanks! Its no problem.... i prefer watching smaller channel honestly. But like myself we are hard to find sometimes
Nice work! I’m new to turning also. Just wondering what your method is to sharpen your carbide tools.
I use a double sided diamond stone 400/1000 and do figure 8’s on it
Damn Brad, that’s a fine looking bowl!!! I’ve never turned a bowl, but I’ll tell you what, turning a rootball, or whatever you call it, would scare the shit out of me!!😂😂 Awesome video!!!
Lol i just love the surprises that come along with it. In the grain i mean, the rocks sucked! Lol
So pretty!
Thanks
Cool project...
Thank you!
I couldn't use my traditional tools at all on my epoxy blanks. I think I had the speed too high.
Yea, its nice having both to choose from
Love it.
Thank you 👍
Outstanding! Ur buddy Duka sent us...
Ahhhh good people! Amazing work. Thanks for comin by

I just havent had the time to devote to growing it. But plan on taking on less custom work this year to crank out more videos
How many litres of epoxy was used? Looks awesome.
Honestly i can't remember fot sure but i dont think it was over 40 oz.... probably less

good luck so creative, Hi from new friend
Hi friend
Brad, who made your signature burning tool? did you design it yourself or did they have a layout to work from. thank you.
I did design it myself. I actually did a full review on my main channel. Ill link it for ya

Hey?! Are you Brad's Workbench?!?!
I hate that guy!
Very nicely done! Gorgeous wood grain and coloring! Cheers, Paige C.
Thank you! I really appreciate it
Where did you get your round tool rest. I have the same lathe and cant find any other tool rests for it. Thanks
Psi just put them out on amazon with the 1” shafts
Did you have to cut length of post? Its listed as 5 3/4 long
Art Lee yes I did have to cut it down a bit
Thanks for info
Hey would you be able to tell me the model of your lathe? Thanks! Bet you had fun cleaning that up at the end lol
It’s the larger Harbor Freight lathe. If you can afford anything better, I suggest something else
Love it! How long have you been turning? I just really started myself, so have a lot to learn.
Maybe 8-10 months.... but i worked on the road alot of that time so definitely still consider myself a beginner
How do you know how much resin to mix?
Total boat has a volume calculator but with piece like this its just a guess. The more you do it the better u get. I always have something else at the ready if i mix too much so its not wasted as well
@@RatedRWoodturning thanks. Resin is so expensive.
@@rsstnnr76 definitely is... most my resin work is by order only because of that exact reason
I didn’t realize there was actually rocks inside that thing lol great project might even like it more then dick pics
Lol those are hard to beat
Beautiful
Thanks
