Hey Iasmina, thanks for all of your open and honest vids. As a non-fiction popular science writer, I am often distracted by all of the plot and character tools in writing software and underwhelmed by the tools offered for books intended to explain complex concepts. In particular, when I write I want to be able to write notes in the margins, notes not only to myself but also to my readers. I imagine my book's layout to have the main body text only occupying a column perhaps half or 3/5th the width of the page, with the large margin space available for me to populate with asides, explanations, pull quotes, figures, graphs, illustrations, photos, maps, portraits, step by step guides, side projects, historical notes, biographical notes, experimental data, and other ephemera related to the main body text beside it. Yes yes yes of course there are professional book layout experts who I can hire to do this after the fact, but I'd like to do so as I write, as I work, as I think. I can not find any writing software that allows me to do this both for notes and figures I want to include in my published work, but also notes to me and to to my editors and publisher. Do you know of any software that I could acquire and use in this way? I have of course tried layout software, like affinity publisher and apple iBook author, but these applications aren't flexible, don't easily allow me to make changes to my text or margin notes without screwing up the entire rest of the book. Thanks for your help. Randall

bibisco Free Community is..... to put it as kind as I can, Junk! I worked 7even hours and produced less than 500 words. Zero Documentation. Before I could start, there was a set of wickets to go through without any explanation of why. Formatting? What formatting. The process of actual writing content was like writing in a basic text document, I have not seen in more than thirty years. Seven hours of intense effort produced less than 500 words! I tapped the "export" button - nothing happened. I installed the program on my Windows 11 Desktop with the programs' instructions to match my current Windows system. Don't know why I had to do that. If I wanted to insult my worst enemy, I would recommend this piece of junk.

The software does not even have a find and replace like word, an invaluable tool for writing. It ain't worth you time even if it works all the time which it doesn't. Oh, and good luck trying to uninstall it! Scrivener is better but it cost 90$ and is still missing that valuable find and replace all, that word has.

I use Word because it has a lot of features I like. Yes, it has a lot more than I need, but at least I know it will do what I need it to do. I also love the newly added Dark Mode because it's better than being blasted with a white screen all day and night, and yes, I write all day and night. I like Google Docs too, but mainly for taking notes. LibreOffice and Apache OpenOffice are very good too. I like Pages but I don't use a Mac. I have it on my phone but don't use it. Thank you for this helpful video. I like simple writing apps as well, just to write my chapters and outlines. But I also find the app with the timelines helpful because sometimes I like to write out timelines and character bios, summaries and side stories. Especially for my longer novels like my book series. And back in the 90s when I would write on paper in notebooks, I would make character bio sections and backstories and timelines as well. I would just write them on the side of the paper and draw a box around it to organize it. :) But I agree that simple is best just to focus on the words on a blank paper. And I used to be annoyed with the old typewriter because we couldn't change the font size. The title had to be the same size as the rest of the story. xD
