This is the result of a country that really invests in a high quality educational system, people learn to think for themself.!!! Bravo Finland. Noblesse Oblige.
They are making food out of Finn-air. ;-P Joking aside, this is pretty amazing.
Basically, food such as proteins, carbohydrates and fats are mostly a combination of Nitrogen, Hydrogen, Carbon, Oxygen with high energy potential. Glucose is C6H12O6, a fatty acid from olive oil is CH3(CH2)nCOOH, and all 20 amino acids that makeup proteins are a combination of HCNO chains. A tiny amount found in food is vitamins. Each vitamin act as a catalyst for a specific chemical reaction. We already know how to make most vitamins. So therefore, if we can manipulate basic elements such as C, H, O, N, into an amino acid chain, sugar or fatty acid chain, we can make food from electricity and thin air.
Follow up: It may not be economically feasible to synthesize hydrocarbon fuels for transportation and energy because of the availability of cheaper sources. But food is more expensive - it likely highly economical to synthesize food. It will just be a matter of quality and purity.
I doubt purity and quality would be difficult to achieve. Yield will be important, since sulphur and carbon (from co2) are not exactly abundant in the atmosphere. Fortunately not much sulphur is needed, and the abundance of carbon (co2) is rising... For comparison there is about 0.04% (400-500ppm) carbon in the atmosphere, where as there is over 70% nitrogen..
@@rkan2 carbon and sulfur are not rare
@@KingLutherQ "in the atmosphere", they were talking about making food out of "thin air"... Perhaps some other planet has an atmosphere with more of all of them.
that explains why there are people that are not eating anything (except drink water) and just keep on living.
He should call it ....Sol Food .
Thank you folks I’m here every Wednesday night . 👏👏👏
It's a massive hit in New Orleans
Awesome video. Thanks so much for diving into this interesting topic and bringing us more great ideas to think about! Now start submitting articles to the various online news sites to spread the word!
Great to see a full interview with the company. Very interesting product.
Neat. I can’t wait until my Tesla can harvest road smog and turn it into food tablets.
I imagine using NOx as ingredients isn't going to work nicely :D
I need a clip of him saying “PROTAYNE” ;)
Awesome tech. I hope they are able to create something the market wants.
You know what else is food literally made of air? EVERY SINGLE PLANT gets most of their mass from air.
yeah but plants need more water and land
That's a very ignorant thing to say. They use hydrogen derived from renewables driven electrolysis as an energy source for thermophilic microorganism that can double biomass in less than 24 hours. Their grams of food per square meter per day value is out of this world.
Small suggestion: The background music was super distracting while he was talking, can you please remove it next time? Trying to digest complex science concepts + electro music make my brain explode 🤯
Impressive green credentials. It should be called Solein Green.
"Solein Green is air!
"
That's a good one...
Great interview!
This is GREAT!
Amazing, Cant believe this!
Good advice for a start up.
Very interesting to now about it
This is very promising. I love the closed-loop system. If I understand it correctly it means the process can be effectively measured, predicted and improved once better technology/cheaper power is available.
His best case scenario prediction is $6/kg. A lot of this process is a fixed number. microbes can only produce protein at a fixed rate. Air scrubbers can only pull X nutrients and CO2 per volume of air. I'm sure there are economies of scale going on but I believe his prediction is the ceiling.
His 6/kg is in “ Nordic conditions “ he says in a different area where energy is less expensive it could drop to 2/kg making it competitive with soy .
24oz of protein powder at Wal-Mart is is about $15 bucks. This sounds like it would be much cheaper than that.
I wonder how this compares to growing spirulina in sealed tubes, in terms of energy and water input vs protein/fat/carb output? If they only output protein then, though it's possible to convert to fat/carbs, as our bodies do, it's another energy input.
Interesting stuff.
Would like to see that comparison as well. Honestly I bet they are close to identical if you took out the fancy air scrubbing tech they need to advertise this system.
Coffee, Soylent and a Bud Light. Truly, a man of culture.
Will the company be publicly-traded, and when? Also, are there alternatives / competing technologies? Patents?
Need to put this on ISS, i can see this being huge as we advance in space.
I bet an organic garden, if done the right way is way more efficient at producing balanced food for humans. And it doesn't require all this expensive lab equipment and solar panels.
Solar food existed since the begining of life, plants are very efficient solar panels in a way. I think their way is not that mich carbon neutral (or negative) as it requires a lot of gear and a lot of energy (even if it's solar) which is going to be a problem as reducing the amount of energy that we use is our biggest chalenge.
They say it creates next to no carbon emissions in producing it but fail to mention the the large amount of emissions the eaters generate after consuming it..
awesome video
Interesting, this has potential 👏
Okay Where can we invest? Between this and beyond meat. I'm going vegetarian.
What's the yield per square meter of solar panel compared to the yield of an hydroponic system?
Probably insanely low
or just plants in dirt.
For some crops, you can actually get better yields by growing them UNDER the shade of a solar panel instead of direct sun. The spaces between panels in a field array actually let in enough light for many plants, and it helps the soil hold moisture, and the ground humidity keeps the solar panels cooler so they make more electricity. Boom... win win win win.
animist channel i also watched the last episode.
I read somewhere that Solient is 10 times as efficient as soy.
How can it be 10X more efficient than soy, yet cost more than soy?
Bro, please dont bring logic in.
I’m really interested in the efficiency of this process. If it can get the costs down to less than soy or whey powder, it could be incredibly successful.
I hear thunderfoot banging his head right now. Lol
Presumably they still need nitrogen fertilizer- it's probably not a nitrogen fixing bacteria. If they could do THAT, that would put it on another level.
You can also gix nitrogen by arking electricity through it.
It does sound too good to be true. If so it could cure world hunger. But it seems a lot like magic to me. Interesting stuff. Would love to know a little more of the practicality of how this works and if you could on one individually.
You had great questions for him. Awesome interview.
The biggest thing we can do to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is reduce or eliminate animal consumption.
I hope to see Star Trek food replicators in my lifetime now. 😁
dkgong true
We need this today more than ever, I'll be your client! I want a sack of powder! Don't sell me cultural food, I want a sack of powder!
Hey Zac, this video is very good but I also want to watch your former show called Mythbusters On discovery Science
He's got himself a bottle of strawberry Soylent to the left of him
What should we study? I heard "Brewing" :P
Thunderfoot needs to review this
Is it edible?
Where can i get some?
Whats the price?
Am hungry ;-;
I have been watching mukbang for 2 hours straight.
So we eat paramecium?
I came here looking for how to make food out of thin air because I'm hungry
Fantastic! Thank you for sharing.
We don't need carbohydrates except for taste. The liver can produce all the glucose the body and brain needs from stored fat and you don't need much. Fats will be important and is the most important macronutrient the body needs for producing new cells and hormones. See Keto diet.
Did they sample his voice for Steven Hawkings voice system.....
It is just rally english ;) Some languages are actually pronounced as they are written, and that is pretty much how he is speaking english here.
@@rkan2 Right. The same in Japan.
This is the start of the Star trek ood replicators .
Colócalo en español gracias
Is it real Redflow battery (zinc-bromine) ?
I doubt it leaks bromine.
That is too much work... Can't we just 3D-print our food? Nowadays, lots of things seem to be made by 3D-printing...
I mean New series
... no. Maybe direction is a promissing one, but goals - pure coin generating stuff, meat - for what reason?
No, no, why?
There are ~ 70 nutrients that we know now (we are still learning), are accumulated in plants for human nutrition.
It's soo hudge plan and technology, but what I heard is what is not an answer for what we are going into next years.
Farm small, permaculture or simmilar, share with locals. Still, it's better then giving Your nutrients levels for next corpo.
Hudge minus NYK for that.
Yah, they could sell several billion dollars per year of this stuff in the USA just as a breakfast cereal and snack bars. Put in a Newman-like provision to set up free food in hungry regions equal to 5% of sales each year, and it would take over the "conscious" food market. Solar food?! Best marketing gimmick ever, even though it's real and not a gimmick. I'd take 51% of that stock just to make sure the good-hearted lab geeks keep control of the process and spread production quickly.
These are the "textured proteins" of Isaac Asimov's book, "I, Robot." Nice! Gogogogogogo!
This product is custom made for vertical farming in the hearts of cities.
Fantastic stuff! - thanks so much NYK! - I have just made contact with SF - I want to get involved with their tech in my LEV in Australia (lev.com.au) and with local PV and Wind farms.
It's people. Solean Green is people!
I have to say I found their name off putting because of that reference.... but here we understand and see a bit of how they make the product.
Call me when they make beer from thin or thick air.
Creating sugars (e.g. carbohydrates) from the air is probably much more simple. Of course yeast is another matter...
All hail the advent of SOLIEN YELLOW. ====================>
May it prevent 'Soylent Green'?
Anyone note how similar this is to Manna in the Book of Exodus??????? Ancient Technology anyone???
So let's say they work out all the kinks and have 100% of all the nutrients needed.. if someone eats only this food are they a vegan or something else?
21stCentury Leaders with good advice and solid idea's worth pursuing
Less the music please
It's people ahhhh 😆
like manna from heaven?
I propose to call it MANNA.!!!!!
Sunny with a chance of meatballs
So. Ur saying i could make a pizza out of thin air ?
Isn’t this what plants do? Why do this when you can just plant seeds in the ground?!? 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
Bacteria grow faster than plants.
Because you can do this in the middle of winter when there's no sun, using wind power, and it frees up land for rewilding.
Sounds a bit like this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quorn
No because quorn needs sugars to work. This removes that step and takes energy directly from the sun.
" Glucose and fixed nitrogen are added as a food for the fungus, as are vitamins and minerals to improve the food value of the product." (from the quorn wiki - glucose is a sugar)
The food from the Matrix?
I just thinking some Japanese robot from the future.

Manna
It could reduce greenhouse gases while helping put some fascist farmers out of business, which is always a good thing. However, I can't imagine this tasting as good as naturally produced foods. Also, I'm very skeptical of the economics of extracting carbon and water from the atmosphere.
Dan Sanger “ fascist farmers “ ? will you fnnng losers give it a rest . Everyone is sick and tired of you losers calling everybody that they don’t agree with a fascist or Nazi . Those words have lost their true meaning and now only serve to identify the speaker as some far left nutcase .
Very interesting topic but please why why why do you need have the music in the background. IMHO Very much annoying and does not add any value!!
I just hate that the DR is looking to the side, instead of at the camera, it looks weird!
What about using Zero Point Energy, free energy (Tesla)
Can't wait for this to be debunked by thunderf00t
@@2nd3rd1st Describe to me what Thunderf00t debunked about what Elon does what is actually happened. I am waiting.... nothing? Stop being a fanboy and think critically. I am thankful to Elon for what he does with electric cars and space x not not all his ideas are smart or practical. This idea of getting food out of air is as idiotic and economical stupid as possible when you can do that at your backyard for FREE. Cool idea but not any cool idea is a smart idea. Same thing as the getting water out of air or "solar highways" etc. All these ideas are cool can be done but not practical at any mean if you actually think about the details.
@@2nd3rd1st 1. I don't think he has debunked videos on tesla batteries just some outrageous claims for which turned out he was correct, because that's how nature works.... 2. Have had a ride on this Hyperloop network lately? Ohm man what a dream. Just wake up. 3. Boring company? what about boring company? You need to provide some context. A far as the misogyny you need to get down from the SJW bus as soon as possible. Even though his appearance at Davin Rubin's show was gringeworthy (I have to admit) going after a con artist like Anita does not qualify as misogyny you have to admit. You also have to admit that Anita has really heart the feminist movement (which was a very important movement during the last few decades) like nobody else from the youtube creator's community and even if you consider him a misogynist that has nothing to do with this video, right? You just don't want to admit that the idea promoted in this video even though sounds cool is economically unsustainable as and you just going to deflect with the unrelated accusations... too bad.
@@2nd3rd1st However if you feel like this idea is revolutionary please do so and also you can get all of your savings into an investment on this idea. I just hope you will be able afford an internet connection so we can continue this discussion in the future after loosing all your money.
Soy is not food
Is not food out of thin air.
Industrial agriculture is bad for the environment true.
But healthy ecosystems need plants animals and microbes, there are very few farmers producing food in a regenerative way. Check Gabe Brown, Greg Judy, J Emmons. Mekonen Farms. There is a need to stop Oil based Agriculture but not this simplistic stupid approach. This is more Monsanto.
No thanks, I'll stick to real food.
Take out that stupid background music
