Some toys I have a tendency to buy two of then one stays boxed and the other open. Now if you have a tray in the box that everything can be laid back into and slid back in the box, I then will usually keep it, but if it is like a bubble on card or a clam shell box they usually get damaged opening those go out, if it is like a NECA box it will depend on the condition of the box if I only have one or if I have two, and if it has a cool background inlay. Like if I have two then of course the best one stays sealed and the other gets opened the inlay is usually kept for potential backgrounds, but the box tray and ties generally go out. If it is SH Monster Arts boxes and trays are saved because the figures can be put back in for storage and or resale. And like a Bandai Robot Spirits figure they usually have a tray with a lid to hold everything in place and slide back in the box like new as long as the box and tray are not trashed I will generally save them too. The or if it is a beautiful high dollar figure like Rebor, Nanmu Studio, PNSO then they are easily storable and can be repacked like they are new.
Marvel Legends, DC McFarlane and such usually get torn up while removing the figure then boxes are gone.
Now the unpunched cards usually don't get opened just shelved in package again unless they are cheap enough to get an extra just to open.
Resale of figures I have found seem to go like this, in box and in shipping box together unopened highest value, opened shipping box but unopened figure box just slightly a tad bit less, both boxes open a little less still high value because you still have both boxes. Figure sealed in original box high value, opened box but still tied in packing still pretty high, a little less if opened and loose. Loose with box better than loose no box, loose unplayed with only shelved better than loose played with obviously.
So if it is able to be put back in the box for sure keep the box, if not or the box is damaged then decide for yourself if it is worth taking up space. Even a damaged box can be worth money if you find someone that wants it for almost mint condition collection.
Like every once in a while you will see a vintage video game or something go for average price, but if they have one in the box or just have the box and the right collectors are looking for it just the box will sell for $5,000.00 - $10,000.00.
Personally I think if someone is paying that much for a box they either have way too much money or they are an idiot, or maybe both. But if you can find someone to spend that much money on a box, take the money and run.
As for me I have the problem of buying and collecting but not really wanting to get rid of my collection, so I am basically saving all my boxes and in package figures for whoever cleans out my house when I kick the bucket. LOL 😂🤣😂🤣
But that's my rant and thoughts on the subject. 🤔👍👍👍
