  • The more tracks you have in a mix, the more likely you are to experience issues with phase. The Phase Meter in Studio One is incredibly useful when checking stereo-playback issues and mono compatibility.
In this audio production tutorial, PreSonus Software Specialist Gregor Beyerle dives into the Phase Meter - what it is, how to read it, and what information it can provide regarding your audio mixes in Studio One.

    Hello,
I recently saw a video in which the bass player recorded his part and we could hear a count of voices that said "chorus...1 2 3 4... Verse 1 2 3 4". it’s really interesting... Can we have the same thing on the next versions of Studio ONe? Thank you

Hi Gregor thanks for the tips...i have a question : is it possible to create a delta mode (like soothe or pro Q3...) for any plugin (I think about standard clip) in studio one ?
    Peace !

Another great informative topic. I have a question. Recently did a track sent it to vocals and it came back with weak music and hot vox but some how got both mixes stacked in mastering page. Was great bcuz I was able to roll up no vox mix with vox mix. Can I render them together or export mix or stacked mixes? Thanx guys. Im a dealer here in centeral valley so running sales and support.

I used to use voxengo correlometer for this until i found toneboosters goniometer which has a meter for everything in the stereofield in the same view. its so helpful to see where on the spectrum the problem is so i will know right away if its something i can solve with a mid/side EQ unless its caused by some widening effect plugin which i rarely use btw. Or if i see the problem in a certain frequency range when metering the whole mix so i can easier tell which track may have a problem. In my experience its better to reduce the width of everything else a bit if you want a specific sound to sound wide unless its like a guitar in this case where you could just have two different takes panned wide and maybe do some tweaks to pitch or timing to avoide them cancelling eachother out.

    Excellent info Gregor and Joe.
That poor guy had his phase on kill.
I fell into the similar trap of trying to create stereo out of mono. It's not something that a phase plug-in can fix correctly. You have to go back to get rid of the phase issue.

The funny thing is that the positive negative portion of that meter wont tell you if things cancel necessarily if there's strong enough mid info in the mix it could stay in the positive only flipping to mono lets you hear it cancels or using it in the track concerned. Also canceling in mono... but ok in stereo can be a good thing, if its just ear candy for stereo. As it might be busy in mono with less width i.e. space for it.
I feel it coming, by the Weekend/Daft punk has many parts specialy the intro and chorus that dip into negative stereo phase. I was looking at this recently as I had an idea but was pretty ignorant about these meters in any detail. So I think what I took from this is by deliberately having things cancel ie soloing sides then mixing them down so they would cancel in mono (as an experiment not for any good reason). Is if I add enough mids from kick bass ect. into a mix you can have this read totally in the positive. So if you took this to mean everything's fine in mono it would give you the wrong idea and may still have a problem. But as long as its intentional, ear candy could cancel or drop in level in mono may be beneficial.
    Just a thought.

Hi Gregor! A very helpful! Also, I hope you don't mind me saying, but I think the pronunciation of the word Phase is "Faze."

The old problem has occured, ehh, mistake what I've made also anno. If you haven't got a second take to make it stereo, you can copy that part from a later part of the song (if it recorded several), or if you wanna use the same take at any cost, you should try to move the second one much more delay (20-30 ms) to prevent phasing.

For stereo headphones it does not matter. For stereo monitors it has a "3D" effect, where the frequencies of the sound "accumulate" in different areas of the room.
    Sometimes quite nice.

I have a question for you Gregor🙂 …is it okay for a track to go out of phase for a certain effect or dynamic imager plugin❓

@@BR_READDY225Well I always fix it by narrowing the signal with the binaural pan. But I was wondering if an out of phase effect will negatively effect a mix ❓

@@VirginHolyFire Are you ok with how it sounds in mono? If you think that's OK then your OK. Is the stereo effect worth it? With out knowing what's happening there it would be a difficult question to answerer.
