- A friend and customer of MotoIQ recently asked us if we could turn her once beloved daily driver Porsche Cayman into a racecar she could drive to and from the track. Of course we could or we wouldn't have made this video! In the first segment of this 987 Cayman build we're setting her up with arguably the best braking and suspension package you can get! We like this build so much we even made it a project on MotoIQ.com, so click the link below to check that out!

I was actually on the edge of my seat for the entire 45 minutes of this video. It's packed with awesome info. I believe this is the 1st ever comprehensive youtube video on Porsche Cayman suspension/brake performance mods. Many thanks!
Big question: what was the cost for all of those mods?
InstaBlaster
Rich
I’d guess $15-20k.
I’m looking at prices. Brake kit is $11k. Wheels tires 3k. Control arms 3k. KW coilovers 3.5k. So $20k so far. All the other stuff + install probably close to $40k. So all this on a $30k car..
@@Azulevo from that perspective, wondering if it would be better to spend the $70K on a used GT4 instead.
Heading into a full on track build for my 987.1 in 2022 and I am so happy I found this video! It's absolutely full of great information. Probably the most comprehensive look at a 987 suspension I've ever seen. Thank you MotoIQ. I just wish I was on the same coast as you!
Amazing info and content. Thank you! Oh, and btw... set X1.25 playback speed. :)
I'm in the prosses of researching and upgrading my 09 Cayman S. I'm in the same boat as this young woman, I need my car to be streetable but it's mostly for the track. I'm going to watch this over and over. Thanks so much!
Cancel that, My car won't be streetable. My Cayman will be 100% track.
This was very informative! Really Enjoyed, especially the part about not needing too much caster angle!
Howard Watanabe FTW! He started working on my cars in 1991, including a couple of them that are featured on our RUclips channel. Keep up the great work, MotoIQ.
Love this setup
This is a great episode. Thanks for the detailed explanation.
Fantastic watch/listen while I cook dinner. That car is gonna be mega.
Amazing video and great content guys. Would love to see a pt2 to this video that covers the engine and drivetrain side of things
Coming soon!
OK she cracked me up when she said, "That's some serious nerd stuff there!" 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
Very cool video!! Keep them coming! 😃
What a wealth of information in this video
What a comprehensive video, excellent.
Glad you liked it!
Best mod for cayman ever
Mike Kojima is the coolest Asian American car guy dude I know of. Period.
Way to out yourself.
Thanks for this video. The Cayman is a great base car which really benefits from modifications, very curious to get updates on this car. Apart from the aero, any modifications planned for the power train?
Yes, check here! motoiq.com/category/projects/porsche/cayman-987/
Great project
Raising the chassis side caster arm pivot point will move the geometry towards pro dive, not anti dive, as you are creating a travel arc that moves rearwards momentarily during the compression phase. Just thought I'd clear that up.
You are correct which is why we lowered it to reduce anti dive.
@@motoiq At 28:55 Mike states that he's raised this pivot point.
I have a similar car and wonder how much this setup woukd be? Also, love seeing women getting into tracking their cars.
That HLS kit is pretty cool idea would like to see it in action ⏫
Where do I send my resume to be her pool boy? :)
Send us your resume and we will forward it.
@@motoiq 😂
Best bit: “do you like the color?”.. “love them, they look great”
Great video, super informative.
Are you going to publish new videos for the engine and areo updates?
Is there a reason you went wider tires at the rear with 285 while keeping 235 at the front. I've even seen a cayman at the track running +20 front and back from stock so 255/295.
We are actually running 275 in the rear and 245 in the front, stock was 245 and 225.
Please do some updates! Would love to see a video of the complete car and also of it on the track!
Check the website, they have everything put together (I think) but nothing about track performance yet
Good guy Mike not even sneaking a peek in there, me on the other hand would have a telltale nose bleed 😐
I came to the comments looking for this!! You sir made my day.
thats a sexy setup, and I think the 19's are too big for the car and 18's look way better...
As long as they fit over the brakes
@@basingold3651 true, but a well designed rim can fit an amazing amount of brakes
20s would probably look even better imo
What s the cost to upgrade all those??
I got a 2012 cayman R. Would love to upgrade to do the track.
I wish I could give this video two thumbs up
Where the hell has this video been hiding 😎
I'd love to hear your thoughts on the s550 ford mustang. Anything from suspension to power adders
Only thing left is a full race exhaust and intake and a tune
@motoiq out of curiosity, how much does a setup like this cost?
Very lucky and beautiful woman 🙌🏻 I wish that I could do that with my BRZ
The car will definitely handle better after all that equipment is installed, especially after your wallet has lost so much weight😏
Seriously, great stuff there.
Around 26:41 they move to the front. Is that brake air scoop mounted backwards ?
Its not a brake scoop, its an air deflector to reduce tire induced drag and wheelwell pressurization.
Great mods. How many $$$ ?
Easily $30k in parts. & labor still needs to be added to that.
@@herculesrockefeller8784 Hummm ! Gotta wonder about the value in that.
@@ziggyfreud5357 only gotta worry if ur broke
Maybe I wasn't paying attention, what year is this Cayman? Base or S? Manual or Auto?
2010 987.2 Cayman S
@@motoiq Cool, thanks. Really useful info then, as mine is 2012 S. Love your info on K24 RSX and Cayman, both of which I own! Keep up the good work.
I’ve heard that the break lines can be broken is that more of a quality of a brand thing or are people over doing it
Considering the price tag of quality goodridge or equivalent lines, I’d not even consider trying the lower price ones.
I’ve seen myself some badly made bike stainless lines that exploded at the banjo.
For rubber ones, I would assume low quality rubbers inflates more with pressure than high quality ones so it probably gives lesser pedal feel. But I haven’t tested any of that, just my 2 cents.
Is it possible to install a cam in a 2.7 Boxster 981?
yes but no one makes an off the shelf one. Plus it isn't advisable to waste money on the M96 engine
@@motoiq the 2.7 in the 981 is a 9A1
What all that modify cost?
something like $10k, if you need an exact number google is your friend.
You guys never mentioned a critical component of the brake system...what pads are you going to run on it?
Stoptech 309
Are there anymore videos?
What year is this car?
I need Jeanie to be my sugar momma 😂
What offset are those Titan wheels?

@@motoiq Awesome thank you. Do you know if they will fit a 986 as well?
real great video, a lot to learn. Only irony is, she sounds so novice for racing, and it looks like overkill for her. Ideally race car enthusiasts make one change at a time to feel the difference, such as tires, then brakes, then suspension, and so on
The car probably never will see races anyway..
Very good project. Only comments is that maybe for such a big budget project maybe better shocks should be in order. Twin tube shocks are not the best and maybe KW competition shocks would be more suited which are mono tube. Also it would be great if you showed how you calculated the geometrical parameters of the suspension. Finally you should be more careful editing the video as you repeat yourself on some points and it makes for bad flow.
Some of the best shocks in the world like the Ohlins TTX are twin-tube, twin-tube has nothing to do with the quality of the shock.
@@motoiq Twin tube as in Ohlins TTX or SACHS 4way are very different on how they work compared to KW Clubsports. KW clubsports have a piston valve in the bottom of the rod (in which rebound is altered by the adjuster in the top of the shock) and compression is adjusted at the entrance to the fluid and compressed gas reservoir. Instead the TTXs usually have a piston that displaces the fluid so that it goes through valves that are in a central block. Ohlins and Sachs use a twin tube so that there is a fluid circuit to the valves and not to control the flow. Fluid displacement, accuracy and repeatability is very different. I have yet to test a traditional twin tube shock that is thermally stable to within 5%. KW is undoubtedly the master of traditional twin tube shocks and they have refined it to try to alleviate their inherent flaws. The usual benefits of traditional twin tube design is cost, packaging (more travel same length), and hysteresis. Also for a car that will be able to produce so much lateral grip it would be good to use inverted shocks which are not available as traditional twin tube.
@@josefodunga With those tires, the KW Club Sport dampers will be more than up to the job.
Also, we don't, at least I don't, know how much force this driver will be able to put into the chassis.
If anything this car is under tired, but with the requirements that it should be a streetable track day car, I think the spec is very good.
Also with the adjustability. A very good package.
@@josefodunga If I remember correctly, the KW Clubsport is a street version of the KW Competition 2-way, which also is a twin tube damper. While the KW Competition 3-way is a mono tube.
By the way, am I guessing wrong if I'm guessing you work with dampers, and also have, or work on a damper dyno?
@@MrLundefaret Yes, I have a damper dyno, provide service and manufacture special dampers. With regards to the type of damper I have developed a dislike to KW twin tubes as they seem to degrade over time (even after servicing them) and have had some of them bend the rod quite easily when subjected to shock. If they are going to install the aero bits Mike talked about I don't think its unreasonable to assume they could corner at around 1.5 to 1.6g's or more (I used to have an 2008 STi I took to time attack with those tires and I could corner at around 1.25g without any real aero) and that's why I think going to inverted for the front is for the best. Also camber loss and deflection is minimized. What this client is asking for is quite complicated and I think it would take quite a bit more effort to provide a streetable car with medium aero and regular springs (would probably use some internal assist springs, etc).
mom?! is this where my lunch money went?
Hey I know you ! Aren't you famous 😉
Tell her that when she is stuck under the hood!
Any thoughts on a cage?
This car has a rollbar made by GMG and six-point harnesses.
Pls list the mod items here
The whole video is a mod list! You can read about it here. motoiq.com/category/projects/porsche/cayman-987/
Why do all 4 wheels turn on the dyno? It's a rear drive car.
So the ECU does not freak out.
@@motoiq Got it. Makes sense. Otherwise PSM and everything won’t let you have any power. So the rear rollers are connected to the front so everything turns together and powered by the rear wheels?
yes
Those r32 wheels are zucc
Was he salivating with his mouth open, lol
What did all of these parts cost?
Probably 7k ish at least. Coil overs are expensive, that cup system and big brakes are the real kicker.
I take that back after seeing the control arms etc. 14k, labor not included lol
@@DNightNinja 14k is just the coilovers with the HLS system.
Are you okay you sound sick I hope that you are doing well
I had a cold when we did this video.
@@motoiq in this day and age I’m glad to hear it’s just that
I don't even own a Cayman and I watched this whole video with interest. Mike, get a mobile microphone........also bring back Jeannie.........for all videos, please.....
I just felt so broke watching this lol I’ve spent over 30k into my sti engine build and I don’t have the money for these beautiful modifications let alone the money to get my mr2 spyder looking good. It needs a paint job worse than pretty much everything on the road and a new soft top and pretty much a new engine. This girls got multiple Porsche race cars lol.
Only two.
That girl is beautiful.. let her know to reach out..;)
Babe has a gt3
No LSD?
Not yet, the car doesn't seem to suffer from inside wheel spin and most racing versions of the Cayman are not using an LSD either.
Is she for real!!???
Lol bolting on a setup that's worth more than the car...
its a porsche not a sentra
thats 25k in parts right there so yeah it better be handling and stopping better!
Well its a Porsche not a busted EG Civic
I feel like you are implying I drive one or something. Besides the brakes which I personally think are overkill I have a lot of the same mods on my 718 cayman. ;-)@@motoiq
There is nothing wrong with an EG Civic. If you drive on the street with a stock car with stock-size tires, the stock brakes are awesome, up the power considerably, put larger R compound tires on it, and do it so you don't have to change back and forth from street to track brake pads, and these brakes are it. I think we said that in the video.
