Bernhard Henrik Crusell (15 October 1775 - 28 July 1838) was a Swedish-Finnish clarinetist, composer and translator, "the most significant and internationally best-known Finnish-born classical composer and indeed, - the outstanding Finnish composer before Sibelius".
Work: Clarinet Concerto No.2 in F-minor, Op.5 (c. 1817) Dedicated to tsar Alexander I of Russia.
Mov.I: Allegro 00:00
Mov.II: Andante pastorale 11:23
Mov.III: Rondo: Allegretto 16:52
Clarinet: Per Billman
Orchestra: Uppsala Kammarorkester
Conductor: Gérard Korsten
Crusell's Concerto in F minor, Opus 5, has been dated to 1815. It was dedicated to Alexander I, Tsar of Russia, and published, when the necessary permission had been granted, in 1818. The choice of key and the nature of the thematic material make of this work something very different.
The first movement is again in the expected form, with an orchestral exposition dominated by the principal theme, leading to the entry of the soloist. Again in the solo writing there is a full use of the resources of the instrument and the composer's own virtuosity as a performer, with the two characteristic registers of the clarinet exploited at once, before the development of the theme by the solo instrument. The key of F minor allows an additional element of drama and occasional poignancy that is very much of its period. A portrait of the composer painted in the 1820s by Johan Gustaf Sandberg shows him holding the score of the concerto with the principal theme of the first movement seen in the music he is holding, a suggestion of its importance to him.
The D flat major slow movement, an Andante pastorale in a lilting 9/8 metre, gives a chance for display of another kind, in its dynamic changes and contrasts, with final echo effects that offer, incidentally, a further technical challenge in the demand for the softest playing imaginable, as the clarinet answers the orchestra. The movement is followed by a final F minor Rondo of great charm, ending in a positive F major.
Crying when you hear such a clear tone.
Why is there such a wonderful music in the world? Incredible!
Wonderful to hear such a fine concerto, by a compose little known in America. If only this work got played in concert, instead of endless repetitions of Mozart.
so fking overrated Mozart xddd
not bad tho... just overrated :b
The problem is that Mozart’s music, especially his more famous works, is capable of capturing large audience; while that of a lesser known, more obscure composer, is likely to attract less of an audience. The sad truth is that there are literally thousands of neglected works by important composers that are not considered for performance by leading orchestras and ensembles due to lack of commercial interest...
@@markusboyd3 A perfect reply. Very well said Mark. Something has to change in the next decade or classical music will be attending its own funeral.
I was lucky my local classical station 101.1 Dallas played this composers music on my way to work so I looked him up for this treat.
I love clarinets, such a beautiful sound...
It's never too late to learn to play😁 it's a very rewarding instrument
@@IsaacW. no it is not
@@michaelshi1360 as in, "it's not too late to learn," or, "it's not a rewards ng instrument."? Lol
@@IsaacW. both kind of because I believe that you can learn anything at any age but if this person likes clarinets for there beautiful sound than playing one is not a good idea because getting a great tone on the clarinet is a pain. I have been playing for at least 5 years and I can hardly tell the difference form my 5th year and my 4th years tone. high notes are a pain to play in tune for me it is always flat and it I can't for the life of me make it sound good or have a light entry, the tone is highly dependent on the reed and it creates days where you sound awesome and day were you sound like crap. I will say that being able to nail a hard passage after days of practice is rewarding but if you just want a beautiful sound than listen to professional recordings.
@@michaelshi1360 not all of that is true. I've been playing for 4 years and I agree with you about the reeds. I got really great advice from a friend the other day- play on bad reeds until they become good reeds. Try recording yourself more often when practicing. Also this step is not for everyone but consider switching to a different teacher. When I switched from my old teacher to the one I am currently with, my playing skyrocketed. A good teacher can make more of a difference then anyone would think.
A wonderful clarinet concerto.

WOW! Unfortunately for me, I just now discovered this remarkable talent!! Crusell is quality work for the auditory sense!!! I thank his brilliance!
One of my favourite clarinet concertos! So much fun to play.

Thank you so much for uploading these concerti, they're such great works for the clarinet!
Thank you! :-)
So beautiful, thanks for posting .
Dilfeng ( and the other music historian magicians on RUclips) have driven me so Lulu that I'm revelling in listening to multitudes of composers I've never or barely heard of. It's a onderful experience, thank you!
I really love this piece! I played this for my state's solo festival. My favorite part is the sixteenth and sextuplet run that lasts for about a handfull of measures!
Love this soothing music
Thanks yet again, Dilfeng !
Wow. That was touching.
Lovely Piece !!
Well done!

Beautiful Clarinet Concerto!
I need to learn to play this! And it would be a perfect competition piece, too.
Chapeau !

Great performance! Any reason this sounds more like von Weber than von Weber? Well Crusell was first and he did study clarinet in Berlin.
Good request. I think we could put the Mozart Concerto in a museum for awhile. Why don't we hear many fine concertos? Well, If the American public (specialists in mediocrity) has not heard a piece far too many times; they don't pay to attend the concert - that's why!
I would see Crusell more in the neighborhood of Franz Krommer. Both Crusell and Krommer living in a time when the art style began to change from the classical to the romantic era, first very slightly and then with a real rush. Anyway this is a true masterwork, showing elements of both eras.

I love Crussell ❤ Sphor is up there, too, for me.
Anyone know who did this seascape painting??
Marcus Larson a Swedish painter. Crusell was an officer in the Swedish army: Very fitting I suppose.
Nightmare to play. But it is fun!
Lol I believe it
Why? Because of the key? Or...

This, Rejcha's G minor and all concerti by Backofen should replace Spohr and Weber in the repertoire.
I listened to Haken Rosengren. The individual playing here is superior. John Mcm
Does anyone know who arranged this version?
It's not an arrangement. It's the original version.
Crusell
Weber is way too overplayed. Crusell rocks
This composition’s orchestration sounds very “Beethoven-ish” and the clarinet part seems very Mozartian. It’s nice but doesn’t strike me as very original.
Well done!
