Yes it is legal, and it’s a loophole, deceiving to the eye but it’s fair play Not a travel.
I disagree. look at 4:54, he has his foot planted (his left foot that he almost always uses to step back) while dribbling then goes to gather, steps back but the foot was planted first. while at 5:01, which I think is the problem, he's dribbling, he's already gathering (doesn't mean both hands have to be on the ball) but at the same time tries to take that quick step then steps back. does that make sense? I feel that the quick step should count as his first step therefore making the next 2 steps illegal. if this was done while driving for a layup I don't think it would be allowed. that quick first step is more reminiscent when doing a quick pull-up jumper. if this doesn't make sense I could try to elaborate a bit more.
I have to admit, he doesn't travel as much as I thought he did prior to watching this but he has gotten away with the move that Curry got called for many times
Jerome Hardy exactly how I feel. Looking at this it isn’t as bad as I thought, but he definitely gets away sometimes with the move curry got called for. But look at Curry’s and look at his, Curry takes bigger steps his are very quick and choppy and I’m thinking it might just be hard for officials to see him with his choppy steps

Steph didnt do the same move at all, what Steph did is he did his first step back with out bouncing the ball then stepped back again to shoot, taking 4 steps in total, what steph did was a blatant travel and it was nothing like hardens.
kefferson its hand placement steph curry had two hands on the ball before his gather step thats a travel if he had one hand on the ball in a dribble like manner then used his gather step into his two steps with both hands on the ball it wouldn’t be called a travel smh
I see 3 steps after gathering the ball so he did yes. Harden does one step before properly gathering the ball and then does two more after which is within the legal amount. Harden probably practices this shot every single day lol.
@Joshua Yoo I never said he doesn't travel sometimes he does. He had a pretty hilarious double step back travel earlier in December, but most of the time he's fine. Lebron often travels himself along with many other superstars. Harden's worst part of his game is his flopping.
Some of those step backs look like illegal, but when you slow down the video he's taking first step when holding ball with one hand and then 2 steps after that.
He travels sometimes; however he doesn't in most cases. He's taking his first "step" right before gathering. As the ball hits the floor and comes up he holds but doesn't grip the ball and takes the first "step", but since it's still technically in the dribble phase (doesn't palm with one hand or grab with both) it doesn't count among the two steps to be called for a travel. After the first "step" Harden will grab the ball with both hands and gather it then does his 2nd step; however albeit his 1st real step to count towards a travel and then his second foot touches the ground for his 3rd step, but again his 2nd step that counts towards a travel. It's a legal move and similar to the eurostep when going for layups. Harden is just *really* good at timing and speed when it comes to this that it looks like a travel.
Yea juss watched the whole video and honestly i only seen one travel based off the rules of traveling i never actually watched james harden hoop fr not really a fan but he has impeccable foot work and he knows how to dissect the defense
Most are legal single hops that everyone does. He plants his left (right is off the ground), gathers, hops back, lands on two feet (2 steps), no problem. It's 1:50 that's the tough one. It all depends on when he actually grabs the ball. If it's ONLY after the 1st hop, he should be able to take 2 more steps (another hop). But he probably gets away with a travel doing this most times.
The reason why it’s legal is because the first “step” happens while the ball is in one hand, meaning that he could possibly dribble again, and as long as you dribbling you can step as many times as you like obviously, so the refs aren’t counting the plant foot, when he comes back that’s when the actual 1-2 step begins and hence why it is not a travel. When the first step happens the ball is in position to be dribbled again, that’s why it’s not called. Pushing the rules? Maybe. Breaking them? No. The problem with harden isn’t this move it’s the 20 FTA a game.
@@cooperjames882 at 2:00 he "cheats" the rule by gathering the ball, but the ball is SLIDING in his hand while he takes 2 steps, THEN takes another 2 steps, 4 steps in total before the shot. Means that jump shot was legal. At 2:34, harden got away with a travel. You can see him as he ALREADY HAS BOTH HANDS ON THE BALL *SECURELY* THEN TAKES 3 STEPS BACK. IT IS CLEARLY A TRAVEL. @ayeHUGO actually, the gather only counts when he puts both hands on the ball or when his hand goes under the ball, none of those 2 things happened, therefore the gather only counted when he touches the ball with both hands, and then he takes 2 steps, not a travel
Once a ball is in a upright position in your hand, your movement is terminated. The most you can do at that point is a pivot. It’s insane how all these big name players nowadays can carry it and walk 4 steps back and pull up for a shot and it counts. They say the 4th step don’t count due to the 3rd final step making it a pivot. But first of all, you can’t hold a ball and walk three steps into a pivot. A pivot only can be used when the ball movement has been terminated.
Most of it look legal to me. But some look very much like travel. E.g: at 0:401:49 he gathered the ball and planted his right foot almost at the same time, then take another 3 steps. Should he be allowed the take that quick small step (with his left foot) before the step back? Or maybe, that first step (right foot) doesn't count?
It’s legal the ball is coming up to his hand on the first step back he has full shooting possession on the second step back the first one is like a hard jab step into the left leg

I’m here after watching Curry’s step back to analyze... It is a very difficult move. Harden travels a lot on this move, but his feet moved so quickly it hard to see. He takes 2-3 short steps moving back and 2 bigger steps to gather. When his feet is not very quick it looks like he takes 7 steps when he feet is very quick it’s difficult to tell in real time but you question your self... (did he travel). More than 80 % of the time this is a travel when done. The thing now is do the refs adjusts after Curry exposed them.. we shall see .
Your gather step doesn't count as a step, and you get two steps after that. He traveled on a few of these, mostly pretty subtle but Steph's was blatant, he took 3 and a half steps after he gathered.
Zhifei Shao out of all of these I counted only about 4. He used a gather step, hops back, and when he plants his feet those are his 2 legal steps. By the rules this is legal although it can be very hard to tell.
Curry got called for it cuz he didn’t dribble in the act of stepping back when u look closer at this video he dribbles once, gather da ball, den steps back but he does it so quick it hard to catch it
Definitely a travel. Sometimes he’s on his 4th or 5th step after his last dribble before he shoots. It’s not even close. I hate it when NBA officials disrespect the principles of basketball like this to benefit a superstar (who would be fine without the help) for the sake of “the show.”
As soon as he puts both hands on the ball and shuffles his feet, it’s a travel. When he has just one hand on it and steps back it’s not. Refs need to start calling him on this!
For everyone here because of Stephs travel there’s a clear difference between these step backs and the double step-back that steph got called for today and harden got away with a couple weeks ago
Traveling non-calls are an embarrassment in the NBA. I've seen Harden, and others take 3-5 steps after the dribble and it is rarely called. The rules are very specific; two steps after the dribble-that's it! Once you land on your two feet again that's four steps-that's traveling. That means no bunny-hop after your two steps off the dribble-that's traveling. You must maintain your pivot foot before you dribble-you can't take two steps back and shoot without dribbling-that is also traveling. Those are the written rules. This was never a debate, but for some reason the officiating has a blind eye to the rules. It's no wonder the players complain about every call, there is no continuity to the officiating or the written rules. It has become a joke to watch, especially when it is so obvious.
@Brazilian Atlantis it's not travel by NBA definitions and FIBA followed recently. until you gather (carry with one hand or hanlde with two hand) the first step is not counted.
He's 50/50 u can't put the step back foot down before you're set... Some these he uses his lead foot to step back into a set shot some of these he creates space and then uses he's lead foot to step back making it a travel steph did travel tho
the nba doesn't care if he is doing anything illegal on the court because he is a superstar and the nba will always promote their stars and give them leeway to do spectacular things, so it's useless to point out the illegal moves and violations, in fact the nba encourages it, however i do think they should have stepped in when lebron started moving his headband to the top of his head, that shit was embarassing
This is absurd. People trying to defend his ass by saying it’s not a travel. Even if it wasn’t it is exploiting the rules, he’s obviously taking too many steps than normal. This hand position during steps should be adjusted in the rules.
Defenders need to stay on harden , he only does the step tobcreate rhythm to his shot he is not a catch and hut like Kevin love , play or kentaibus post
All y’all trippen if you think Curry’s “ step back “ looked anything like this. Y’all still salty over the last game when Harden made Oracle Arena his playground.
i have to disagree on that, watch his hands and dribbling, not only the 'step back'. he clearly dribbles it with one hand the first 'step back', the second and legit step back he has the ball in his two hands so thats clearly not a travel, just looks like one. the first one looks like a step back move for a jumpshot but clearly he just steps back while dribbling the ball just like catch an alley oop and failing to take the shot and landing with both feet, a lot of people would call a jumping violation. plus a lot of travel accusations associated with gather there are indeed travels in this vid though, harden travels, but not on 2:00

This guy is travelling all day and it shits me
The first clip is a travel yo.... he just sells it so well.....
As soon as he puts both hands on the ball and shuffles his feet, it’s a travel. When he has just one hand on it and steps back it’s not. Refs need to start calling him on this!
For everyone here because of Stephs travel there’s a clear difference between these step backs and the double step-back that steph got called for today and harden got away with a couple weeks ago
so many travels, so little time
Traveling non-calls are an embarrassment in the NBA.
My phone died to water damage cause those shots were so wet
That man does not travel. He makes it look to smooth that's all stop hating
1:47 clear travel
Aaron Mich nah he didn’t put it into both hands yet
As long as he doesn't touch the ball with two hands he can take 25 step backs if he wanted and it won't be a travel.
Same shit curry did.
Its not a travel, you're allowed to take 2 steps after you gather in any direction. If thats a travel, all two step layups would be a travel
So we just gonna ignore the fact that alot of these are him traveling
Defenders need to stay on harden , he only does the step tobcreate rhythm to his shot he is not a catch and hut like Kevin love , play or kentaibus post
whats his FG% on those type of shots?
He definitely traveled a few times but ref can’t catch it, so in game, it is not a travel
traveling just normal has been for more than 25 years
At least 50% of those are traveling.
Anyone watching this after Steph tried to do the same thing but got a travel call
Step back ASMR
Did anyone notice for the first time that he’s left handed
walk waaaalk FUCKING WALK every step back
If i apply the same footwork logic, but i step forward instead of backwards, it would definitely be a travel 100% of time.
False
This shit is fucking beautiful
Was he running to catch a cab?
All y’all trippen if you think Curry’s “ step back “ looked anything like this. Y’all still salty over the last game when Harden made Oracle Arena his playground.
Some of these looked literally the same though lol
Genghis Khunt you gotta watch the hands mainly. When the hands go on the ball for this move determines if it’s a travel or not
The one against toronto lol at 2:00 is laughable
i have to disagree on that, watch his hands and dribbling, not only the 'step back'.
he clearly dribbles it with one hand the first 'step back', the second and legit step back he has the ball in his two hands
so thats clearly not a travel, just looks like one. the first one looks like a step back move for a jumpshot but clearly he just steps back while dribbling the ball
just like catch an alley oop and failing to take the shot and landing with both feet, a lot of people would call a jumping violation. plus a lot of travel accusations associated with gather
there are indeed travels in this vid though, harden travels, but not on 2:00
@@lyndongaming you kidding right lol he takes about 3 steps back
2:05 same as curry
