Saw some comments about us not introducing who Jesse is, honestly it never occurred to me and Mike people wouldn't be familar with him since he was so influential to us, but we'll make sure proper introductions are present in our other interviews. Anyway, here goes. Jesse Cox originally started on youtube as OMFGCata back in the Cataclysm beta. He since moved on to Let's Play series as well as featuring in the Game Station and Co-Optional podcasts with his friends Dodger and the departed legend Totalbiscuit. He has also worked on the RUclips Red series Good Game, had appearances in games such as The Witcher 3, Cyberpunk 2077 and Heroes of Newerth. You can now find him often working with Crendor, and doing his daily 5-minute Gaming News series, among other things. Check him out here: www.youtube.com/@jessecox
Since wow is a combat game, it should look to how action-adventure movies tell stories. From Indiana Jones to back to the future, heck even John wick have pacing and narrative techniques that wow can learn from.
Every time I see the name Jesse Cox on a video/article/thumbnail I have this feeling of "...wasn't that the guy that was doing pre-cataclysm launch hype wow videos 12 years ago?" and it seems like too much of a distant fever dream to be worth investigating... But glad he's still active and seemingly thriving!
14:30 Mankirks wife actually is in Shadowlands and is a badass fighter in Maldraxxus. Her name is Decimator Olgra and when you speak with her she says “their screams aren’t as satisfying as quillboar, but they’ll do.”
These two guys are just amazing on their own but even better together! Also, saw TB in one of the clips at the beginning. Man… still a gut punch… Every time a good new game comes out I wonder what he might have thought of it.
Remember when I met them at Dreamhack. Gave them Daim and Plopp, which they thought was very funny. Over 100month sub on jesse's twitch channel. God bless
Haven’t seen Jesse since TB passed, I watched every co-optional podcast but couldn’t after TB passed. It’s good to see Jesse is still trucking and still his usually excellent self
I had a smile on my face throughout the whole video. I would absolutely love to see you too sit down and discuss each FFXIV patch story and theory craft about where it's going, or to discuss the standalone FF games in detail. Your conversation together is just so natural and you both look like you are genuinely having fun that I just want more.
"It's a lot of resources to make it develop that way" is such an infuriating answer. As something of a writer myself, I try to adhere to a fundamental rule when it comes to worldbuilding. If i don't want to deal with the aftermath of any given setpiece, say for example a giant frickin' sword stuck in a desert, then I DON'T STICK A GIANT FUCKING SWORD INTO A DESERT. There are SO many other ways blizz could have handeled that situation and still got Azerite, BfA and everything else out of it in the end without the sword. Instead Sargeras could have gripped the planet, sinking his claw into Silithus and inflicting the wound on Azeroth that way and as he prepares the strike with the sword, he could have been pulled back and as he is, he tries to hold on to Azeroth and in turn tears the wounds open even further. Instead of sacrificing our Artefact weapons to "un-evil" the sword, we could have used the stored energy to stabilize the wounds. Problem Solved. And it's that same team that's written the artistic masterpiece that was the Jailer's plan and is now writing the Dragonflight plot about Galakrond. Yeah... I'm on pins and needles about how that one will turn out. Can't wait to find out how much of the Chronicles, a piece of fiction that was meant to serve as the foundational cornerstone for the lore, will be left "valid".
So this comes up so much, even by "story" people. The sword HAS been dealt with. It was just in a quest that everyone seems to have forgotten. It's why we sacrificed the artifacts to basically make it inert. It's essentially a mountain now. Also even if someone wanted to remove, how? The canon size of it is it reaches into low orbit essentially.
I honestly dont give a frick about stuff like that when it comes to video games. I play video games to have fun with its gameplay+story and world and atmosphere. FF13 was more cinematics than gameplay. I am not a developer to care about stuff like "omg look at how the characters sweat look so real" I care about how polish the game is and how enjoyable the gameplay is.
When you talk about a story ending and just wanting more and can't wait. That is how I felt with this video. I can't believe it had to end I wish there was several more hours of this
Shortly after discovering Jesse, I came across Zepla reacting to one of Preach's FFXIV vids and I had no idea what would be in store. And now two of my fav FFXIV content creators in the same room! More collabs with Jesse like this would be great, but I know timezones are always an issue T_T
thank you for the crossover and collaboration with jesse. you guys are great :) @35:20 there was a conversation about how to make player choices matter without separating the players. swtor was able to make player choices matter without separating the players in gameplay, through an alignment system. i'd love to see wow have a system where your choices matter, towards an alignment (like conformist, divergent, etc.). here's hoping the wow devs investigate swtor :)
This was a great video. Thanks guys. As for the topic. WoW was my first MMORPG and I played it back in 2004 a couple of days after launch day. I will always have a warm feeling about the game and the lifelong guild friends I met playing it. But I started playing FFXIV back in 2019 and my mind was blown. The FFXIV story is cohesive and old content does not become stale and is still relevant. I have shed many tears playing FFXIV and it is truly a finely crafted game with a story and characters I truly care about. As for modern WoW (not Classic) it is a mess of throw away content and characters I barely care about. It is full of gameplay systems that do not mix well with each other and vast chunks of gameplay systems that have been abandoned (I loved Garrisons). I have started playing Dragonflight and yes the gameplay is interesting but once again there are a whole bunch of characters and a story I barely care about but I am hoping improves as I progress. Sadly the main thought I have while playing Dragonflight is that I must log in to FFXIV to continue some crafting professions I was working on. Finally the WoW graphics engine is aging horribly and badly needs a modern makeover. I acknowledge they have made some improvements over the years but it cannot match FFXIV crisp and very detailed graphics, costumes, and character graphics. And the FFXIV devs have already stated the next expansion will have a graphics engine overhaul! I really hope the management of Blizzard/WoW can keep WoW relevant otherwise it will continue to be a game I come back for each expansion and then drop after my 30 days are up.
Honestly, as someone that grew up with the WC RTS games and has been on and off WoW since the Vanilla days and TRIED to get into XIV but couldn't, I'd say...just drop WoW, it doesn't seem like it's your cuppa anymore, while XIV does. I also find that with each new expansion, Blizz's art team ends up carrying the game more, while mechanically their game suffers (like how Vanilla flying has been a thing for 18 friggin yrs and only now has it changed in DF, primarily because Blizzard bought out an indie dev team who primarily specialised in flight mechanics and they were the ones who brought us Dragon riding in this expac), but DF seems to be changing that up with Dragon Riding, Dracthyr flying and some profession changes. Old content in WoW is always going to look dated, just like how some content from XIV's first expac looks dated to me compared to the images my friends show me of the latest content from XIV. A new engine for WoW would mean dropping WoW entirely to start a new game, and I know Blizz is far too late into the game (18yrs to be exact) to pull a XIV style revamp and just end the world to start the plot anew, that'd piss off so many ppl (myself included, because I don't want WoW to completely copy all of what XIV does, it'd lose it's own identity). The removal of some parts of Blizz's shitty management and the new folks and new studio brought in to work on WoW seems to be changing things up for the better, and we're seeing this via DF, and so far, ppl are loving it (myself included again). Preach is slowly warming up to it (seeing it via his streams, not this one vid), Crendor just recently released a vid where he's loving it so far, Nixxiom says he's loving it atm and even Asmongold is starting to warm up to it, and from my experience, the servers pretty much balked on day 1 of release, so I'd say it's being received better than SL ever was. I accepted that XIV isn't for me, and I moved on, I think it's prob in your best interest for you to do the same.
I gave DF a try and i kinda ended up like Jesse in Shadowlands, i reached a point in leveling where im just like, its the same just new coat of paint. Similar to what Jesse said at 11:45
This was like a pleasant fire side chat with some old boys of WoW. I could listen to these lads talk for ages coz of similar experiences in gaming. Very fun interview.
33:41 The love for the dwarf’s stories in Dragonflight and the more fluff-stuff like choosing what name to put in the guest list, small cutesy quests and more do actually kind of prove that it CAN in work in war. Maybe not to that extent, but at least a bit.
GOD I need that Jesse talks about what Shadowlands could have been video. That "you get empowered" bit was so cheesy but you pulling the sword out would have been so awesome!!
I think I would be frustrated by that video because it's clear what Jesse things Shadowlands needed is the opposite of what I think it needed (I'm of the opinion that our character is the only one that should've gone to the Shadowlands and no other regular NPCs should've been there. Only residents of the Shadowlands). I want the opposite of Jesse where I don't want them to focus on an over arcing story, I want them to do expansion only contained stories because their smaller more contained stuff is what they're best at (look at the incredible Spires of Arek as an example)
Jesse just casually sitting that AMAZING Lil JC figure down. Still love the look of that thing. Awesome interaction guys (Can't really call it an interview, it was watching two old friends catch up and share stories).
I love conversations between people who are genuinely passionate about the games and aren't just trying to promote their brand. Makes me miss TB somehow though, I wish he could be one these conversations, I would love to hear his opinion
This is lovely tbh since Preach to me atleast filled in the void totalbiscuit left after his passing, especially after Mike started showcasing more games than just mmos.
30:40 Jesse is spot on here, honestly I was invested with Yrel (during WoD, up to the last raid) as much as I was with Emet, but I was more involved as a player with Yrel (played as ally that xpac), WoW can do it right, they've done it right before, but they forgot they did it right and fumbled at the goal, idk what happend to WoD storytelling, the xpac was overall trash, but it was the best linier storytelling they ever did in WoW
What happened with WoD was they scrapped a load of content that was supposed to come in the middle of the expansion and skipped to the end to work on Legion.
Wonderful conversation, really enjoyed this crossover! You two get on so well, it's such a naturally flowing conversation. I hope you two plan to talk more in future!
29:40 I only played a little bit yet of Dragonflight, but can tell you that I was shocked, SHOCKED, when I met Alexstrasza and she... remembered me. (My character.) Compare that to Shadowlands and Jaina, the person we spend even more time with, just referring to me as Champion and never even acknowledging that we met before. Just for that small detail alone they got big bonus points.
I hope you end up giving GW2 the time to see the story in that game. Slow start but it is over 10 years old but HoT and onwards is awesome. And the story continues throughout all the expansions / living worlds. Something like the last zone of HoT has a meta event that is the story of what is happening in the world while you are in your own story.
The thing Jesse was talking about at 14ish min about shadowlands not having the stories really be about all the characters we knew in an afterlife themed expansion really was my gripe as well. I was expecting us to just be tripping over every character we've ever killed or lost etc etc getting to see all these interactions between characters like we only got a taste of with like uther talking to jaina or whatever and there was just very little of it when it should've been the core of it.
I think that was the only plot thread that really upset with with how out of nowhere it was, and I'm one of the few players that really loved wod mostly cause I love time travel and branching time line bs
I went to Gemucon! It was great, I got to meet Jesse in person for the first time, and then got to see him have a showdown with Lightning and carrying her away!
I'm so fucking glad you guys touched on the story in WoW. No one really talks about why the story in WoW is bad until you guys. It makes it so, so hard to care about the story when characters are disappearing left and right, when the plot doesn't chain together. It makes it so a brand new player would have no freaking clue who the characters are or why they matter. All of that is on top of them adding big story and character development in the novels. I could rant on and on about this.
Honestly seeing these two sat talking about wow and stuff makes me feel old and nostalgic and kinda sad but happy. Sad because time has gone so fast since the good old days I miss TB man. TGS was 10+ years ago that's insaine.
Loved this interview! I wish in WoW we could do like a quest line or something which would allow you to move your race to the opposite faction, bit like SWTOR where you can sway where your loyalty lies. I would love to be able to play my alliance races on horde or vice versa
Saw some comments about us not introducing who Jesse is, honestly it never occurred to me and Mike people wouldn't be familar with him since he was so influential to us, but we'll make sure proper introductions are present in our other interviews. today in 5 minute gaming news that may or may not be 5 minutes ...
everybody knows that woke beta.
I clicked on the video because Jesse, but it did seem weird to me that it just rolled into the talk without any kind of intro
The crossover event we didn't deserve, but needed.
Just like Preach and Yogscast!
14:30 Mankirks wife actually is in Shadowlands and is a badass fighter in Maldraxxus. Her name is Decimator Olgra and when you speak with her she says “their screams aren’t as satisfying as quillboar, but they’ll do.”
That's amazing. Good for her for getting her moment!
I'm really glad these two have good chemistry. Seeing them just hanging out and chatting like they're old friends is totally wholesome.
These two guys are just amazing on their own but even better together!
Also, saw TB in one of the clips at the beginning. Man… still a gut punch… Every time a good new game comes out I wonder what he might have thought of it.
I feel ya... I miss TB so much.
Yeah, I doubt there'll ever come a time when I won't miss TB when it comes to these things.
Remember when I met them at Dreamhack. Gave them Daim and Plopp, which they thought was very funny. Over 100month sub on jesse's twitch channel. God bless
Maybe Jesse ate him
Might be the Fanboy talking in me, but i really think the industry got worse after he passed. He always called dumb shit out.
I need more Preach and Jesse talking to each other content. This was so fun and interesting to listen too!
The podcast duo we didn't know we needed
@@Frenchfraeis once there was podcast with Jesse and Another British WoW player gaming personality a tad more cinyical britman
Awesome vid, great chemistry between them also! Gosh, what I would give for a co-optional with Preach while TB was with us...
That would be so fucking awesome.
❤️
I'd love to hear TB give Blizz so much shit for the state of WoW(up to shadowlands) & their company's many issues
YES! I've been watching Jesse since Cata beta, and this crossover is a dream. Love hearing both of your thoughts.
Same!
'The Day Deathwing Came!' to be more precise x3
Wow this felt like a 2 minute video we need more.
Seeing you two together after watching both your stuff for well over a decade is awesome!
Haven’t seen Jesse since TB passed, I watched every co-optional podcast but couldn’t after TB passed. It’s good to see Jesse is still trucking and still his usually excellent self
This was one of the most enjoyable videos I've watched in a while.
Great discussion; hoping for more Jesse Cox and Preach content in the future
👍

You can say whatever you want about FF13 but the ingame scenes look soooooo nice. Its like trailers within a game.

Wow. This was the best. Such great conversational chemistry. I could have listened to you both waffling on about your gaming hits and misses for ages.
When you talk about a story ending and just wanting more and can't wait. That is how I felt with this video. I can't believe it had to end I wish there was several more hours of this
This was such a great interview. I hope you both collaborate sometime in the future
I could sit and listen to Mike and Jessie talk forever
This is so good, two of my favorite people in the world together in one room
Damn, this felt way shorter than 50 minutes! Jesse and Mike are among my favorite content creators.
I need a podcast with this two
My two favorite RUclipsrs, keep it up guys. Awesome interviews preach
Shortly after discovering Jesse, I came across Zepla reacting to one of Preach's FFXIV vids and I had no idea what would be in store. And now two of my fav FFXIV content creators in the same room!

I have been wanting this interaction for a long while! You too are my favorite creators that I discovered during the WoW exodus to XIV.
This was such a nice video, thank you Preach and Jesse!

This was great, could watch these two speak endlessly.
holy smokes... Jesse has gotten huge. :O
I could watch you guys talk about games for hours. I hope there's more.
Not gonna lie I was looking forward to this more than everything else out of the blizz trip XD Love Jesse
I used to watch Jesse's content in Cataclysm more than anything!
What a great collab! Loving these long form conversations between great people.
This was like a pleasant fire side chat with some old boys of WoW. I could listen to these lads talk for ages coz of similar experiences in gaming. Very fun interview.
man i could listen to Mike and Jesse talk all day long, it was so good just listening to you two chat

Glad you got to make that video less than two weeks after this interview, Jesse!
Watching preach play Xenogears would be incredibly entertaining. Endless vaults of content
Two of my favorite RUclipsrs in one video. Let's go.
yes, its time for jesse cox to come to the UK and make one podcast episode about ff14 in preach's studio.
Two of my favorite content creators, thanks a lot for this talk!! Wishing this happens again in the future!
I'm so glad you got to sit with Jesse, I've loved him and crendog and tb for so long. Loved this interview/sit down
This was a delightful lil' listen.
Did not expect to see Jesse here, but that explains the statue from earlier!
Jesse just casually sitting that AMAZING Lil JC figure down. Still love the look of that thing. Awesome interaction guys (Can't really call it an interview, it was watching two old friends catch up and share stories).
Don't normally watch this dude's content, but I love me some Jesse Cox.
Great interview & Discussions. Seeing Totalbiscuit in some of those clips, RIP. I miss him. 😢 But great seeing you & Jesse talk about DF & FFXIV.
Been watching the both of you for the better part of a decade and this was WELL worth it 👍
I love conversations between people who are genuinely passionate about the games and aren't just trying to promote their brand. Makes me miss TB somehow though, I wish he could be one these conversations, I would love to hear his opinion
This was splendid! Many thanks to you both!
This was awesome, hope there will be more of these and cant wait for the one with Josh
Really great conversation between you two, excited to listen to this again.
Mike's lopporits/Tataru and Jesse's Nashu voices are iconic! What a legendary meetup!
Dude his preferred story line of shadowlands that he seemingly came up with off the cuff is blowing my mind. That would’ve been SO MUCH BETTER lmaooo
It somehow made me even more mad about what actually happened lol...
This is lovely tbh since Preach to me atleast filled in the void totalbiscuit left after his passing, especially after Mike started showcasing more games than just mmos.
Also in calling out developers and publishers for their anticonsumer bullshit
Rip total biscuit what a legend
30:40 Jesse is spot on here, honestly I was invested with Yrel (during WoD, up to the last raid) as much as I was with Emet, but I was more involved as a player with Yrel (played as ally that xpac), WoW can do it right, they've done it right before, but they forgot they did it right and fumbled at the goal, idk what happend to WoD storytelling, the xpac was overall trash, but it was the best linier storytelling they ever did in WoW

Wonderful conversation, really enjoyed this crossover! You two get on so well, it's such a naturally flowing conversation. I hope you two plan to talk more in future!
Hey let’s go Jesse and preach!
Two of my favorite content creators. :)
Preach! You should play Final Fantasy Tactics as well!
I dont want this video to end
this was an interesting talk. always love to see jesse.
29:40 I only played a little bit yet of Dragonflight, but can tell you that I was shocked, SHOCKED, when I met Alexstrasza and she... remembered me. (My character.)
Compare that to Shadowlands and Jaina, the person we spend even more time with, just referring to me as Champion and never even acknowledging that we met before. Just for that small detail alone they got big bonus points.
I love how jesse talks to preach about wow and yet still his archenemy the man in the ocean finds his way in.
Preacher. Mankriks wife is in Maldraxxus. Its the decimator Olgra npc. She just slays some mobs and says its not as satisfying as quillboar slaying.
I needed this so badly. Thank you!
Jesse has a great video on comparing the different experience of WoW and FF
This was actually more enjoyable than i anticipated
I hope you end up giving GW2 the time to see the story in that game. Slow start but it is over 10 years old but HoT and onwards is awesome. And the story continues throughout all the expansions / living worlds. Something like the last zone of HoT has a meta event that is the story of what is happening in the world while you are in your own story.

Too many original characters. Dont make an expack meant to run on nostalgia and not include many old characters
Really good point Jesse. Everyone loves wow up until wrath, because thats where warcraft 3 ended.
Jesus Jesse got so big to put it kindly.
You should do podcast with jesse i can listen to it for hour
We've had mike and crendor, now we're getting mike and jesse, cant wait for the ultimate coxncrendor episode featuring mike 😏
That Yrel callback... Oof. As someone who pays attention to the story when I play WoW, that Yrel reveal really hit me hard.
I think that was the only plot thread that really upset with with how out of nowhere it was, and I'm one of the few players that really loved wod mostly cause I love time travel and branching time line bs
I went to Gemucon! It was great, I got to meet Jesse in person for the first time, and then got to see him have a showdown with Lightning and carrying her away!
;u; Omig!!! I never imagined to see these two in the same room.
Woah, I like what I'm seeing. One of those things you never knew you wanted until you got it.
i actually just replayed wc3, and its seriously crazy, a game ive played since 5 years old still gives me them feels, so good
Man...i would love them to go on. Such a wondeful pair these two are.
That was a lovely interview
I don't know what was better. The guest appearance of LiL JC or Jesse's continued frustration over the man in the ocean.
Mankrik's wife is actually in Shadowlands in Maldraxxus, though I'm not sure she has any quests or lore to her at all.
this was great, was hoping you guys would talk more about ff....maybe next time
Don't they talk enough about that one mmo on their respective channels?. I barely see these two ever talk about WoW, let alone in a positive light
WHAT?! I did NOT expect this crossover. Brb, grabbing snacks and drinks to fully enjoy this!
This was amazing ! Just wish it was ten times longer 😁
would love to see you and jesse show up at pax west and do a panel like this.
14:30 Mankirk's wife is actually in Shadowlands, She's in maldraxxus outside one of the big towers
I can see TB smiling in the sky! Hi John!
We need more of this
Loved this interview! I wish in WoW we could do like a quest line or something which would allow you to move your race to the opposite faction, bit like SWTOR where you can sway where your loyalty lies. I would love to be able to play my alliance races on horde or vice versa
@@MrKnaives all I want is the ability to play my race on either faction from a story prospective
two of my favourite creators having a chat? Yes please. :D
