This was by far one if THE best scenes in the movie because of the fact that it was PRACTICAL! It looked very realistic and Peter Stormare's reactions were genuine. Stan Winston Studio, FANTASTIC JOB!
it makes the dinosaurs so much believable and practical effects are actually cheaper than CG , it just requires more planing and time to make the practical dinos.
Steven Slouber I'll always love practical effect dinos! I mean, I like CGI too, but practical effects deserve some love, seeing as they make excellent results like this!
Thank you so much for sharing this! That is incredible! I've always been a fan of practical effects over CGI, though both have their places. But for something like this, it's great to see real reactions and interactions.
The trouble I had while watching the scene with the compies attacking the guy was that the practical compies moved kind of stiff. Even as a kid I noticed the head and neck parts were kind of stiff as it was moving wildly while the body stayed completely frozen. The good thing about the practical compies, though, is that even looking at old clips today, the close-up shots of the skin texture is very believable. The cg compies I liked because their movements were smooth and animalistic, but, again looking at the old clips, in the scene with the little girl at the beginning of Jurassic Park 2, the cg is kind of blurred and slightly glowing compared to the background, where the background is sharp, detailed, and dark. So: -Practical: stiff, but detailed and same light levels as surroundings. -CG: blurry and slightly glowing, but smooth. Another thing that I kind of nitpick is the Spinosaurus in Jurassic Park 3. The Spinosaurus in the scene with the people trapped in the plane was very apparent that it was practical. The top head and jaw looked like two planks just opening and closing on each other, and it moved very stiff. I thought they hired come cheap special effects company to do that, but now I find out it's the same company that did the previous two movies, which I have high regard for. I guess these practical effects/VFX are a mixed bag. It'd be cool if they could mix both of their strengths and none of their weaknesses.
I'm from Brazil, and always wanted to work in STWS, I am a big fan. Everyone talks about the CGI domination, but ... I always prefer animatronics, I want to say thank you to Stan Winston for making us like the movies. Thanks also joh rosergrant and all of Stan, who continued his legacy with quality staff. ah! Please put the making of the baby T-Rex, I always wondered how it was done. # Stanforever
The compy attack pratical effects finally revealed! I aways wanted to see something like this. Thank you for posting it. I'm wondering if you guys are going do compile all these behind the scenes videos and release on a dvd in the future.
What you guys created really has been the work to be remember and to be inspired by. As long as artists and technicians choose to work together to achieve the effect practical characters will remain useful. Some critics of this scene made a question about the lethality of the Compies. In the novel these things had a poisonous bite that made the victim fall asleep. Despite their small size a pack of venomous biters could kill a person.
SWS. I've been hearing that Jurassic World is going for more CGI than practical dinosaurs. Please tell me that's not true! Please tell me that you guys are or have in fact already made the dinosaurs! I need to know! Or this is one pure Jurassic Park fan who won't go see it without your epicness involved.
Ereptile me too! It constantly amazes me, when looking at the behind-the-scenes footage, the ingenuity and creativity involved in coming up with some of these effects. -Maggie
I’m actually reading the book Jurassic Park now, not far in, but I think they’re making it out where the compys had cobra like venomous spit? It’s very strange reading the book after seeing the movies (I saw JP as a little kid and didn’t know there was a book lol). So now I’m doing research into real compy Dino’s lol
A lot of people who boost CG forget that a much smaller team can get even better results that a huge crew of CG artist, developers, programmers, compositors and matchmovers. I think the low budget realm is where CG is at its worst. Films like The Deadly Spawn were made on a shoe string budget and the monsters look better in that than any of the modern monster movies that The Asylum and SyFi channel pumps out.
Yeah, if only some of the low budget CG monsters were more shadowy looking real practical effects stuff, then they would've achieved a much better result. But when you see a 50 meter anaconda that doesn't fit in the picture because of poor res or textures, it blows the whole effect away.
I'm not saying that CGI doesn't have it's usefulness but the best effect always comes with good planning and clever combination of techniques, not just one mindset. No matter what the approach, some people make lazy gimmicks while others do dedicated ones. Despite budget, CGI can easily look tacked on due to it being created without enough care due to it's supposed "ease". Such trends can be broken.

I impressed with how far we have gotten with technology in film, but I do miss the creativeness of practical effects!

Stan Winston Studio, FANTASTIC JOB!
Yes legendary

This in no way would ever have been better in CGI. Practical wins hands down ! :)

That's why the first two versions of Jurassic park are legendary
Cgi works better depending on the context of the scene.
@@nosferatu6385 What context?
The camera guy should really put down his camera to help the poor bastard being eaten alive.
Good point, Daniel. - David
Riiiiiight.
Yeah is making me feel bad for this guy thet got eaten by compys
Lol yes
Reminds me of Unsolved Mysteries.
I would've never thought that my favourite dinosaurs in jurassic park 2 were so simple.
Love the practical effects here and the use of bike parts really sells the models. Would love to do something similar

I would love to own one of these. They are so amazing.

The fact after he put the compy down it just looked like it died
special effects like this are so much cooler than CG. At this point CG has more draw backs than special effects. Yet year after year we get more.

amazing!! i love compys
90s.. They can do it better without cgi...
Even tho CGI is so advanced nowadays, practical effects are often still way better.
