Instablaster.
It is amazing how careful planning can really make a difference for our loved ones and for Emma specifically. Thank you for sharing another great video :)
A nice laid back trip helps moms nerves. Hi Emma, safe travel you three.
Yes indeed - thank you Tom! :-)
I have a 13 kilo anchor and no windlass, and found wedging my legs against the anchor locker using a rowing motion bending my back and pushing with my legs does the trick easily . I'm 65 and sailed the boat from the Isle of Man To Didim Turkey without a problem on my Bavaria 32 .
Hi Frank, thank you for sharing your experience and technique, we can all learn from each other. Good on you for your fantastic sail to Turkey. Fair winds, Chris
That’s what I do as well with similar weight anchor. If the anchor is really buried, I’ll tie secure the rode at ~1-1 scope and it will work itself free while I take a minute of rest.
Great stuff. Just had a windlass motor winding fail with 30 mtrs of chain out. Actually putting the vid together now so hand pulling 10mm chain is something we are familiar with. Both our two children loved sailing and always were happy with sleeping even in rough weather. Neither were ever sea sick so it must be good to grow up on a boat! Sail Safe guy's. Ant & Cid anchored on the isle of Elba. xx
Good on you guys, Elba looks stunning and there are tons of anchorages there! Boat life is brilliant for kids. :-) Happy windlass fixing and enjoy Bella Italia! Cheers, Chris 👍
@@SailingBritaly Thanks Chris we are about 3 weeks behind so its all done. Loving Elba. Very beautiful. Ant.
👍👍
I have the same yacht- Bavaria Sportline 350 3 cabin
We fitted a Lewmar Pro 100 in the chain locker on a shelf
We have a 10kg Rocna anchor and 60m of 8mm chain
All very satisfactory
👍
Hello, thank you always.
What's covered on her deck? Was she originally teak decked? I've been thinking about alternatives due to recent deck problems.
Well that's a great tip Chris. Cheers dude 😁.
Baptism of fire for me too next week as I do the final prep to sail mine around from the IOW to Portishead. So when is your next big trip? I shall be finishing off the antifouling, cleaning and oiling the teak, polishing up the hull and putting the new name on it and stripping the head and lapping the valves in before it's put back in the water next week. I can't wait 😊⛵
Hi Vince, happy to be of service! I'm on the boat now frantically preparing things for some solo sailing. Hopefully new horizons soon, but our plans of late seem to be drawn in the sand at low tide so we will see what happens! 😁 Good luck with your boat work and I hope everything goes according to plan with a successful splash next week. Getting in the water is a huge milestone, and then the adventures really begin! Fair winds mate! Chris 👍
great work! the weather and current seemed quite rough for me to try to lift the anchor alone... and yes - a true (family) sailor always tries to make the best for everyone aboard.:)
🌟 Hi Tibor! Thank you very much. I replied to your questions earlier, I hope that helps. Very best regards, Chris (plus Rossella & Emma) 😊
So helpful in visualizing what I will be dealing with once I get my own vessel. Great content.
Thank you! You will probably enjoy my solo sailing series too, here’s a link to the first video: Sailing Single Handed, UK to Belgium, Part 1 | ⛵ Sailing Britaly ⛵ ruclips.net/video/0XGxxTWAOrM/видео.html
Cheers, Chris 👍
use a rolling hitch on the anchor chain pull the line back to the winch and repeat until free, ten times easier and safer
Nice video guys, Chris you look so chuffed to finally be sailing with your family! Nobody has done a video on RUclips about selecting where youre going to anchor and working out the height of the tide so you have enough scope out to cope with high and low waters, just a thought!
Hi there, oh yes I'm very happy to start getting moving! Thank you for the suggestion. I've got some solo sailing coming up and there will be lots to talk about in terms of planning for that. Cheers, Chris 👍
Why all chain rode? Isn't there a much greater "slamming" effect when a boat at anchor on all chain pitches up and down? I prefer the combo of 20' - 30' of chain followed by synthetic anchor line, with some built in give and stretch. It's also much lighter to retrieve manually.
Next trip around into the Swale estuary. There's a lovely little creek leading to Oare opposite Harty. I think you might have enough draught to get up there but once the tide goes you'll be drying out in the soft mud, but don't run aground! Is your boat a fin keel?
After this how about a trip out across the Thames estuary up past Shoeburyness to Burnham on Crouch or a little further up into the River Blackwater? Very nice sailing there to find your sea legs.
Or you could take a trip up the Thames towards Tower Bridge and St Katharine's Dock although his can be quite choppy and uncomfortable at times if wind over tide. Might not be the best for Rosella or Emma.
Liked the choice of music for the intermission.
Hi Alex, I have some anchorages in my sights, looking forward to getting out there soon. We do have a fin keel, 1.65 m (sailboatdata.com/sailboat/bavaria-350) but she should take the mud just fine. I'm tempted to put her in a mud berth just to experience it!
There are lots of lovely places to explore around here. We'll see where we get to before the channel crossing.
We did plan to go up the Thames into London but the clock is ticking now...
Thank you for your feedback on the music.
Cheers!
Chris 👍
Chris, Hans from Holland here: thanks for your nice and informative video. Especially the scene from behind, where I can see you steering and throttle movement is very informative. Question: would you keep the camera just there when you are maneuvering into the slip: I want to learn from you, especially backward into the slip. Thanks!
Well done the crew
Thank you Gus :-)
I fitted a manual windlass after getting caught out by the tides in the Bristol Channel in full flood of 4.5 knots. Trying to lift anchor solo with no auto tiller is very hard work. Pulling a 9m boat towards the anchor against 4.5 knots of tide is insane and that's even before you lift the anchor off the sea bed. But hey I now have a windlass, fixed my auto tiller and so far not been caught out by the tides 😊😊😊
Hi Lee, 4.5 knots is a crazy current for sure. Congratulations on upgrading your boat, we intend to do the same eventually but all in good time. Cheers, Chris 😊
smart mopve with the autopilot!!! Tnx for sharing
Thank you for watching & commenting David 👍
since u have no windlass maybe try rigging up an anchor ball. save your back.
Very nice video guys
Thank you Brad 👍
Great explanation. Is there, in your opinion, to use a prusik knot scenario, to also, raise the anchor? in car one needs to run back to the cockpit.
Hi there, you can use a rolling hitch to tie a line on to the chain to hold it if you don’t have a chain hook. I invented something I call a “chain stopper claw” which you can see in this video:
Sailing Single Handed, UK to Belgium, Part 1 | ⛵ Sailing Britaly ⛵ ruclips.net/video/0XGxxTWAOrM/видео.html
This is extremely convenient, especially if you sail alone.
Cheers,
Chris 👍
Well done guys. If nothing else you will get a good work out Chris. Just a suggestion, and I know you are very good at prioritising the work required, do something about the Hasp hanging down from the hatch. I realise you have red tape on it but its only a matter of time before someone drives it through the top of their head then you will have a situation you never wanted.
I'll have a look at it Roy, thank you. Chris 👍
@@SailingBritaly You might be able to just swap the hasp for the staple and vica versa.
Hey Rossella I hope you have another boat recipe video coming soon ?
:)
Hi Andrew, this is Chris... We lost subscribers when we posted the last 'boat food' video, which was the first video Rossella had ever made and edited herself. (I have to admit I was mildly offended on Rossella's behalf, she really didn't deserve that). Everyone has to eat, and if you are on a boat for a prolonged period, it's very useful to know how to cook a wholesome meal on board. Unfortunately some people have certain expectations about what kind of videos a sailing channel should make, and they voted with their feet. I don't think Rossella will be too keen on making another one of those videos for a while, unfortunately.
@@SailingBritaly That's quiet sad.
However I understand where you guys are coming from
Maybe a baby monitor in the cabin so you can hear what’s going on below with the engine on.
Yes we had the same thought! 😊
I was just going to make the same suggestion 👍🏻
Great video 👍😊
Cheers Garreth! 👍👍
What happened to the windlass you had in March 2019 in the Wrestling Anchors video?
That was our previous boat. We owned two boats for a while - one in Italy and one in the UK, which has made for a slightly confusing timeline on our channel. We sold the boat in Italy (VinceRo) and this new one boat is called Britaly. Cheers, Chris
... and there I thought you were just trying to give as many muscle groups as possible a work out while weighing anchor ... like how they deal with the tides in that marina ... have fun be safe, save our oceans ....
😂 Yes the full body anchor workout, it might be the next big thing! We’ve really enjoyed Gillingham Marina, it’s really friendly and a lovely place to keep a boat. Fair winds! Chris 👍
Where is all the under water camera? I thought a nixe one was donated
Hi Jerry, the ROV will be great to use when there is some clear water to put it in. Unfortunately in bad vis you wouldn’t see anything...
Good stuff
Thanks Jeff 👍
