Just ordered a few of these. I live over 5300 ft high in North Central Az. I didn't think this would grow in my area. But I've been told differently and plan to give it a try. Thanks for the tips.
Wow!!! My plant arrived today, I have a cute trellis for it, I’m now confident I can keep it growing, and now because of you I’ve been educated on its growth habit- sleep, creep, leap!!! Thank you!!!!
Thanks so much for this video. I purchased one last year but was worried it literally isn't doing anything and contemplated digging up! I now know she is sleeping focusing on her root system.
Hi Janey 🌺 wonderful video about star jasmine . I love star jasmine and I have it in my garden and its flowers are attractive like your star jasmine . Have anice day. 🌺🦋🌺
That was helpful. I live in Fair Oaks and just planted star jasmine on a fence in afternoon sun. It’s looking rather….well, sleepy, I guess. Good to know a leap year is in its future. Do you think misting it would give it the humidity it wants?
I have both hardy jasmine and confederate jasmine, and both survived Long Island winter in the shade. In the summer, it's full sun on deck. When I received them they were cuttings that were rooted they grew 6 to 7ft by fall the confederate bloomed but the hardy jasmine didn't because it needs a cold cycle to trigger blooms so this year I can't wait I'm thinking of putting my confederate near my pin oak because it can climb trees like poison ivy with Arial roots that stick the bark. I've seen this in Louisiana they go up about 30 feet, and they can thrive in shade. Winter Jasmine, I heard needs full sun, so I'll plant that one near my front door that faces south.
Hi - Some of the leaves may turn brown and fall off, but the plant should rebound in spring. Star Jasmine is generally hardy to Zone 8, with some to Zone 7. (Looks like Austin is 8B.) If you can, may want to protect it a bit during really cold spells with frost cloth. Also, check with a local independent garden center for more local recommendations.
Here in the mid Atlantic we have enough humidity in summer, but winters can be brutal if your plant is potted. Although my star jasmine has been an ina thin plastic pot for 2 winters and co es back each year. Just repotted today for growth. It’s that 3rd year leap I hope.
I grew it in Santa Cruz County, CA, and would really like to plant it where I live now: 8b, Port Angeles, WA. But I can't find it here, so even though it supposedly grows here, does that mean it probably won't? You do a great job. Thank you.
What fertilizers do you recomend? I’m currently in Southern California and just bought a lil plant at a local nursery and hopefully for growth in the spring
Hi Adriana, Star jasmine doesn't require much fertilizer, if any, if your soil is amended. Add compost when planting or apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in spring. Too much fertilizer can result in more foliage, less flowers. Good luck!
Hi can you advise me as my Gardner accidenly cut the plant and it was climbing and beautiful how to save what is left as I see some of the leaves started to dry and I am worried all the plant will die
This was so helpful. I’ve had my star jasmine for 3 years now and have yet to fertilize it because I didn’t want to upset the apple cart lol 🤦🏻♀️. Also, I live in CT where I have to bring it inside for winter, but I’ve been having trouble with it recently. The leaves have been turning brown and Im having trouble figuring out how much water I should give it. Do you have any suggestions for jasmine kept in inside planters?
When my stuff starts turning brown I'll take a couple of the leaves to my local garden center and see what they think. Sometimes depending on which way it goes brown depends on which nutrients it needs or what it has to much of. I don't mean taking to like Home Depot or places like that. A local owned nursery or garden center has employees who are much more knowledgeable. I hope this helps! When it's container grown it can be difficult to keep the soil balanced, or know what it's lacking. The nursery could probably direct you to somewhere to get that tested if all else fails.
Wow ❤❤❤ I need this plant!! Do you have a few seeds or cuttings ? I need to ship it so seeds or cuttings will work only not a complete plant with rootball.
We moved into a house with a star jasmine plant. I was so excited! The plant itself is thriving and I have to constantly cut back the vines because it is constantly growing. The only drawback is that it hasn’t bloomed at all. I have never seen a flower or even flower buds on it the who year and a half we’ve been here. Unfortunately, it is planted in a place where it doesn’t get much sun throughout the year. I’ve been thinking about digging up and placing it in a pot where it’ll get more sun. Again, please help!!
I put mine in a greenhouse did nothing for 5 years in the ground. I’ve just bought two more and there struggling leaves going yellow and dropping off but in bloom.
I Planted 9 star jasmine alongside my gate to give my front porch some privacy they are about two feet apart from one another. I noticed one with starting to show sad looking brown leaves at the battom. I live in LA, and the area they are in is full sun. I initially started watering twice a day and backed off after 1 week to every other day. This was 3 weeks ago. Any tips?
They could just be settling in if still new. Try watering every day, especially in this heat. As Janey mentions, they use a bit more water than she expected to do really well. Yellow and wilting would be more of a sign of overwatering. It may also be sun scald if they were just recently put into full sun from a more protected area.
Hi! I’ve a star jasmine that’s gone really leggy, it’s growing along a fence and obstructing a narrow passageway. I would like to hard prune it back to the fence but this will mean losing all the thin layer of top foliage! If I hard prune will new foliage appear? What’s your advice? Thank you!
It will root deeply, so I'm not sure it would be a good choice. However, a local expert might be able to provide better recommendations for your growing conditions.
Trying to learn how to teach my star jasmine to climb up column...every time I hear/see "full sun" I know it's time to put my plant in mostly shade in Vegas 😂
Star Jasmine is very beautiful but the smell of the flowers always makes me neausas when they first bloom. After a week or so the smell becomes pleasant.

I love the fragrance. Just planted some in full sun. Hoping they grow well!

What fertilizer do you use ?
thank you for your expertise
Thank you 🙏 great tips I have 3 of them and I did just what you said and they are beautiful ❤
Thanks for the Sleep, Creep, Leap tip.. I was worried that my Star Jasmine hadn’t grown at all above ground after 3 months of Spring/Summer growth.
I just got 2, should I plant them on the ground or 2 big planters that’s I have?? They are going to my patio, thanks

Any tips in the winter time? It may freeze here in Austin.

How is the root system? I want to put it in a planter box. Does it need a deep box?
Hi which is a good natural fertilizer and is it messy when it drops the flowers? Tx
Nice advice

Do you have any videos on growing jasminum officinale indoors?
Hi - No, I'm sorry we don't.

Do you have it in a container? What fertilizer is best?

Your star jasmine (at old location) where was that location from house, north south east or west?
Omg I walked by a place in Tokyo today I was like what is that smell - wow - I took a picture and had to research ❤
Hmmm...I've just purchased a pink and a white S.J for a partly shaded area..
this is probably going be a challenge here in the U.K 🤔

If i cut it back will it rejuvenate? Las Vegas, if so when and how much?

@@Gardendesignmag thank you!
I thought it was also hardy in zone 7 ? Can you buy it when its in it creep phase?
There is a variety called "madison" that is more cold hardy and is better for zone 7.

Why is pruning always so nerve wracking!? Maybe this other video from @DigPlantWaterRepeat will help.
What must be given in fertiliser?
How deep does the roots go down in the ground being i don't want them to get into my septic leech lines.
It will root deeply, so I'm not sure it would be a good choice. However, a local expert might be able to provide better recommendations for your growing conditions.
Excellent!!! Thanks!!!!
Can you prune the top of the plant mine is a little dead at the top
Yes, you can! They take well to pruning back.
Trying to learn how to teach my star jasmine to climb up column...every time I hear/see "full sun" I know it's time to put my plant in mostly shade in Vegas 😂
I'm based in UK. I've planted one of this in front yard, it doesn't flower much? We don't have good sun here, what's the solution?
Not much you can do to supplement the sun, unfortunately.
@@Gardendesignmag these shouldn't be sell in garden centre when there know it won't work.
