Those are good questions! I have not loaded ammo from each measure and checked them for group size or velocity. That might be another great video idea!
You are eventually going to knock over that powder container …..it’s inevitable. At least get it away from the edge of bench. Better yet, get an ultra clean mason jar and use that instead. Put a lid on that expensive powder!
Very interesting and informative. I am also using the Hornady LnL powder measure and I had very consistent loads with the pistol rotor (9mm reloading with VV N330). I changed over to the rifle rotor to reload 5.56/.223 and had horrible results. Up to .7 gn difference between loads using Hodgon Benchmark powder. And I always threw a minimum of 5 powder charges after adjusting the powder weights/volume before I started to check the weight. I switched over to manual powder charging since I didn’t feel comfortable with the Hornady system. Your results give me hope that my setup was somehow faulty. I’ll give it another shot tomorrow . Just one question: Does your plunger in the rotor completely move up and even touch the red housing during your downward stroke or do you have a small clearance between the plunger and the housing when your handle is completely pushed down?
Interesting! I did have mine set up to where there was a little gap between the rotor and the housing, per Hornady’s instructions (I think?), however I don’t think that could cause the issues you were having. I’ve never been a huge fan of using stick powders in a powder measure because I’ve always got results like that which you speak of

As I’ve already mentioned, I’ll give it another try with the clearance between housing and plunger (even though I also don’t believe that it can make such a big difference). The powder has quite “small sticks” (at least compared to my 6.5 CM powder IMR 4350) so I hoped this wouldn’t be an issue. But maybe still too “sticky” for consistent loads (+- .1 ) is absolutely would be absolutely ok. I’ll keep you posted about my second try.

With sobering results. 50 test loads with Hodgon Benchmark on Hornady LnL powder measure with rifle drum and plunger and baffle: Average: 25.18 gn, standard deviation: 0.24 (!!!) Max: 25.7 gn, Min: 24.6 gn -> ES: 1.1 gn 🤯😱. I really checked my setup twice but based on those results, it doesn’t make any sense to use the powder measure. So I will powder charge my 5.56 with my RCBS Chargemaster Dispenser and the powder funnel die on my LnL. This will give me way more peace of mind.
@@alexanderbleiholder1436 I don’t blame you there. I’ve never had any better results than that with any kind of extruded/stick powder. Now fine ball powder on the other hand meters pretty well! Check out my video on the Lee auto drum powder measure….
What a coincidence. I did almost the exact same test on my Dillon yesterday. I’m reloading for High Power Rifle competition, and it’s a choice between having slightly tighter groups versus the time it takes to charge by hand. Statistically, it makes more sense to spend more time at the range and less time at the reloading bench. (See ruclips.net/video/wBIligz1NlU/видео.html) I’ll be glad to share my results.
