We all know he didn't like to be an idol, but SM shouldn't have tortured him so much. He loved to compose songs and write. Why SM didn't gave him the freedom to do so instead of forcing him to keep overworking so much? He was never depressed. He was just misunderstood by his whole country. An INFJ, possibly. Leaving an INFJ in a toxic environment, deprived from all the things they care, being undernourished of love, belonging and space for individuality, also surrounded by stressors and tortured by haunting schedule that is not nourishing to the well being... Or his physical health... It's just how terrorists are made. As an INFJ depressed person who shared at least 95% of Jonghyun's traits with him, it's absolutely disgusting to know how poorly handled he was, by his therapist and his closer friends (also Koreans). Nothing will make me unbelieve that he was taking medicines the useless therapist gave him without monitoring the Collateral Effects in him. Leading to obsessive, self judgemental, sleepless, negative and suicidal behavior. This therapist... should be in jail. Jonghyun never had a problem, aside from being totally deprived of everything really meaningful to his personality and surrounded by people unable to understand him. As a foreign fan, in a sea of comments in his social networks, there was nothing I could do to help him notice and understand that he was not sick and not alone. We are 1% of the world. (Even if MBTI is uncredited as a source of diagnosis, it's still a simple way to generalize personality types in humans.) That he wasn't weak. That it wasn't inside him, but AROUND him all the burdens and toxic agents in his environment. That it wasn't his fault. That depressed feelings was not a personality trait, but a symptom of bad environment and exhaustion of his personality where and how he was living. I will never be able to sleep properly again. I will never be able to smile as I used too. I still unable to stop crying and it hurts me almost unbearably, to see his innocence in all of this and to see how disgusting is South Korea's lack of education about mental health and how terribly bad was his assistance during all his life. Nobody in south Korea knows how to cope with different points of view. Nobody can actually change it because this is rooted in the education and development of the material value on top of human value in there. What killed Jonghyun was his country. I lost my soul and one core light in my life on December 18. And it Hurts so painfully to the point of almost destroying me completely, to know how amazing, kind, generous, powerful, sensitive, intelligent, dedicated, unique and wise this man was and how ignorance, negligence and nastiness in his country's society shattered his innocent heart to the point of making him to believe he was not needed or valuable as a man. I hate all of this and there is nothing that will bring me joy in this life anymore. Knowing that Jonghyun was only One, in Millions who might be enduring the same ignorant and outdated view of fake professionals in his country, dealing with stigma, useless judgement and hipocrisy of this depressed capitalist nation that have no clue about how to deal with each other's hearts. My only consolation is to know that one more day without him is one less day without him. My pain... His pain... This world disgusts me. If a friend come at you with a suicide letter ONE WEEK EARLIER, your friend is asking for help. You don't wait or deliver to Korean parents who also don't know what to do. You call an ambulance. You put this person in an idle state sleeping and being well monitored to avoid self harm. If you have notion that your damn son or brother wants to take his life, YOU DON'T WAIT him to finish schedule. You put him in an ambulance and let him in an idle state to be monitored. You examine his blood hormones, his gut Flora, his brain activity in certain regions, you verify side effects or cross reaction while taking multiple medicines. You LISTEN to him and you guide him. You don't blame him, you don't make it his guilt, to find an answer he is not informed enough to find. You don't suggest a fucking hospital where even doctors.don't know what to do and treat people like abnormalities. Depression is not constant sadness. Depression is a immune response to harm caused by trauma, people, routine, environment, faulty metabolic function or damaging/terrifying/stressful situations in someone's life. It's a hole AROUND you. NOT inside you. Cheering someone up while they are depressed is a good intention, but doesn't treat it. People need to read, and find decent support. Specially in entertainment industry. 1 out of 5 in South Korea is depressed and the whole country see this as an invisible issue caused by "laziness or lack of courage" thinking that going "by the book" of superficiality getting money and being successful will save them from being depressed. Please if you need help, if you're believing it's your fault or if you're being told this, GET OUT of this environment and stay away from those saying this to you and seek others with similar feelings and issues OUTSIDE of your country. Korean medicine is outdated and superstitious. Judgemental and stigmatized. Does more harm than good. Unless you want to change your facade only... Everything that killed this man is a social concern that NEEDS to be changed in economic or social environment for the sake of future generations. My heart is in pieces... :'(
AuraAcqua I agree 100% with everything you have written here.Toxic environment and the wrong sort of people who understand things ONLY from their point of view could really kill you.I was so upset at his near ones,he was clearly,CLEARLY asking for help.He waited to see if it came.If anybody cared,and nobody did.They blamed his personality and told him to go to a doctor and shit,they should have ran to him the moment they received a suicide note,it was a suicide note for Fuck's sake.I am so surprised at that friend who actually waited till he died to release it,like she was waiting for him to die and release it online,instead of doing her absolute best to save her dying friend.I loved SHINee a long time ago when I was young,but certain things happened in my life that actually pushed me to depression.So I forgot all the things I used to enjoy and love and I even stopped enjoying music.My life came to a halt.I still loved them and they were in my heart but I hadn't followed them for years.And my life,it is still hard for me,but I do my best to find hope and strength to live a happy life. I have been trying to get better and been starting to rebuild my life from the ground up,listening to music and trying to be better and that was when I heard he had passed away from depression himself. I really agree very much about environment being a huge factor of depression.. But I took 2 years to get out. I could, JH had a year left to the end of his contract right? That doesn't seem totally undoable. I suspect in the last 6 months something really triggered his thoughts to spiral into deeper depression. Finally i read someone who understand his true personality..because we hv same personality too..and most of people don't want to see him in different perspective. People only want to see what they expect from him as an idol and don't care about his true personality. It is mentioned by Jonghyun in 1 interview in Mnet. He decided to go, because nobody of his friends who know about his depression really understand his feelings, personality and point of view. But, people who have same personality will understand why. I really lost him. People usually don't really understand what is depression and INFJ as well. They only can judge INFJ without even knowing the truth and facts. I also think his friends who receive the letter / know his depression may not really good friends of JH. Good friend will not ask depressed friend to see doctor to cope it by himself and only acompany him wherever he go. True friends will directly help him as soon as possible with maximum effort to cope from depression. JH don't need anyone to always acompany him. He only need understanding from HIS point of view and feelings, pure caring and support. And because he don't get any understanding, finally he thought he is in the wrong place and tell himself is 'it's his fault to hv INFJ personality, and for entering this industry and this kind of environment'. This lead him to think he doesn't deserve these all and 'go'. In fact, he is more than what people say. I lost and miss him so much. I hope from this case his country can learn more how to cherish their idols and relatives.

I 100% agree, for days I have been wondering on how to put his death into words so thank you for writing this. Thank you for voicing what has been sitting on my chest. It shouldn't have happened, he could have been saved but he went and there's so many factors to blame (SM, friends, society...) but his death shouldn't be in vain and societies outlook on depression needs to change. The industry needs to change. His cry for help won't be the only cry for help...
