Omg!! I’m in perimenopause, JUST got blood work done and never in my life has it been elevated and I eat plant based but BAM, I suddenly have elevated cholesterol.
Pay attn to triglycerides and the Apolipoprotein B mentioned in video. Not total cholesterol. Don’t eat sugar and cut back significantly on seed oils(soybean, corn, and canola). This will reduce inflammation on the arteries. When getting blood work it’s the Apolipoprotein B levels and the Small Dense LDL that matters. Nothing else. Don’t fall for the high cholesterol scam, it’s done to sell drugs. You need cholesterol to repair tissue, repair the brain, protect cells, and make hormones. Vegan can and do have clogged arteries if they eat sugar and seed oils. You want to also actually know if you even have plaque. For that you need a CIMT test. Also for knowing calcification of arteries, you need a CAC test. K2(M7) will take care of the calcification issue. And Nattokinase (enzyme) will clean up the plaque.
Stop eating plant based that's why its elevated 🤣 You need protein and good dairy too along with cruciferous vegetables and healthy non GMO nuts. You roast the nuts or bake them before consuming. You also need organic eggs and omega 3.
I refused to take a statin for overall high cholesterol. My HDL and triglycerides were perfect she said . My primary dr was mad. I said ok order me a calicum heart score test. If there is plaque in my arteries I will take it. She reluctantly did. She called back a few days later and said congratulations you have ZERO plaque In your arteries. Keep up the good work! Ladies research this stuff! She also flat out told me she would Never prescribe hormone replacement therapy for ANY woman. She said it definitely causes strokes. I went straight out of there researched doctors and found a hormone only obgyn. Within 3 weeks of estrodial and testosterone and progesterone therapy no hot flashes , sleeping like a baby after years of sleep deprivation. The other doctors answer was always ambien and gabapentin! That is insane! Thank goodness for these ladies we just heard speak. They are saving our lives and quality of life!
Last June marked the 1 year mark of no menstruation. I’ve always eaten healthy and am active but my cholesterol levels began to creep up so I switched to a plant based diet with no change. I’m now on my 4th! Dr and am being told the same by each one. Estrogen raises cholesterol, therefore I’m not a candidate for HRT. I was however offered Gabapentin or Zoloft for hot flashes. I’ve got an appointment with a new Dr next week so 🤞🏽
I have hereditary high cholesterol. I have told my doctor that there is NO way I am taking a statin. Too many side effects I am not comfortable with. Do your own research and do what you are comfortable with. We all need to take charge of our own health even if it goes against medical “norms”.
Look up the Korean Cholesterol Mortality Study published in 2019. Over 12 million subjects. No money from Adventist cult food industry or big pharma. Once Cholesterol drops under 200 the death rate for everything increases hard and fast. That includes suicide and violence.
I can't like this video enough! Same comment as another post...what can we do to lower our cholesterol during menopause. I have read that taking soy lecithin can help. Would love to hear Dr Haver's opinion on this!
So the question is, does HRT have an effect on cholesterol in post menopausal women. BTW, I cut out sugar and flour and of course lost weight. I also went back on HRT. My cholesterol levels reduced. And I came off statins, while my cholesterol continued to reduce.
I had the same question... have there been any studies showing HRT reduces (or maintains) cholesterol levels in postmenopausal women? Seems to have worked in your case! 😀
I started IF, changed my diet to mostly fresh/natural foods with 1 meal out a week and started HRT and my chol numbers dropped drastically in 3 months.
I am so glad you're advocating for us! Just received online results on blood work. High cholesterol. Never had issues before ...what should I do? My doctor hasn't even responded to the results.
You should be eating healthy anyway not because you got a flawed test done. They make up the cholesterol levels to sell Statins for the pharmaceutical industries. You need good protein and fats especially as a woman.
I have familial hypercholesterolemia. I did not know this until recently. I am post menopausal. My lipoprotein (a) is almost double the high end. ApoB also elevated along with LDL and total cholesterol. There are currently no meds approved by the FDA to lower lipoprotein (a). What I can tell you is that 6 months after starting HRT my lipoprotein (a) dropped 25%. It is still elevated but I do believe the HRT is responsible for this. My ApoB has been significantly reduced to mid range normal. I do take a statin but a small dose along with Zetia. These meds together with the HRT has been effective. I would not have known or started HRT had it not been for Dr. Mary Claire Haver and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to benefit from the information she has generously provided.
My problem is my cholesterol is and has been going up since going full menopause so this year after bloodwork my PCM sent me to a cardiologist and I had a full work up. After all the scans I was cleared and was not put on any statins. I am trying my best to eat healthy and stay active.
Thank you! My cholesterol has increased from one year to the other and I’m menopausal but not at one year mark. Blood work showed tanked hormones. I am now working on better diet to control cholesterol and see how that works while being on hrt. Wish me luck!
Did anyone ever think that a woman’s cholesterol should go up around menopause? I am going thru the last stages of peri menopause and I have started eating eggs most everyday. I also melt a Tablespoon of organic butter in my morning “mud” (collagen, greens, and other things). I like sardines also so I eat those 1-2 times a week. And do my best to eat real food that is the least processed.
I'm thinking that cholesterol level going up for women around menopause should be normal and healthy. Cholesterol is needed to generate estrogen, and estrogen is needed from that point forward. I don't think that cholesterol going up should be a bad sign unless there is inflammation--especially endothelial inflammation.
Along with genetics take into consideration perimenopause. Increased cholesterol with no change in diet has been noted during this phase. Dr. Mary Claire Haver has a RUclips video talking about exactly this.
WOW! My surprise at hearing these facts is only surpassed by this being the first time I've ever heard them! Please keep speaking up for us, doctor! I wonder if there was any difference for women taking hormone replacement therapy, because my doctor says she will only let me take it for 5 years.
My Dr will not prescribe HRT unless I take statin medication and lower my cholesterol levels. This feels disempowering as I’ve never felt intuitively like I should be on statins.
Is there any research on FSH levels and cholesterol? What are *all* the factors that go into elevated cholesterol in post menopausal women? Thanks, Dr. Haver, for all that you do!
@@kimtaff1932 And what if that doesn't work? What cholesterol medicine does Dr. Haver recommend for menopausal women instead of statins....bile acid sequestrants, niacin, fibrates, PCSK9 inhibitors, omega-3 fatty acids, Zetia, Nexletol? Or just live with high cholesterol? I guess the point of this video is that we still don't have any scientific evidence in women, but still is there one she recommends if a woman still wants to go on cholesterol-reducing medicine.
OMG?…this explains sooo much, so much of what I researched and yet was told meh, you’re wrong. By my male drs! Thank you! If I could only find a dr who cared like you locally…!
Marie Claire could you do a summarised bullet pointed 5-10min non-talky video on all the things we have to do to facilitate weight loss in menopause? 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Thank you for sharing this! So now what then do we do because if you also add a layer meaning for us women of color the comparison is even waaaay of the charts because we also have certain differences in our genetic makeup and stuff?

Do all doctors know that cholesterol isn't truly high if the ratio is 2:1? Many aren't ordering the full labs - Advanced Lipid Panel (including Lp(a) which is genetically vital to know!! Dr @Dr.MaryClaireHaver,MD, is it worth doing one's own direct access Lp(a) $50 labwork if the Dr doesn't order it for us?
