  • The long-life deities include White Tara, Amitayus, and Namagyalma. The long-life practices have several benefits. For just our basic biological health, we want to live as long as possible to benefit others, train in dharma, and prepare for our next life. These practices purify unwholesome karmas that we have created in past lives, making our lives shorter and more difficult.
The long-life deities are like preventive care - you get help on how to stay healthy, reduce obstacles, and so on when you practice long-life sadhanas and recite the mantras. The Buddha talked about people being overly attached to their bodies in the wrong way. Everything, including caring for the body, has to be the middle way. The Buddha generally wanted to emphasize that you need to take care of the body, but it is impermanent.
Doug describes the benefits of the practices, and leads us in chants of the mantras for each of the three deities.

In 1995, Lama Jinpa received direct heart/mind transmission from Geshe Gyatso after 25 years of Dharma practice and study. He is one of the few western lamas thus far recognized within the Gelugpa lineage of Tibetan or Vajrayana Buddhism, the lineage of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
