The release date is pretty on point as well. And yes, it is _pretty_ graphically advanced for an NES. And it's in an art style you would expect more in an american/european NES game than a japanese Famicom game. Because the studio who developed this game, Athena Co. Ltd, is a japanese studio and the game was released in Japan in 1990 first.
I gotta make it clear that the reason why late lifespan games look so good, is due to mappers So this is not actually pushing any limits and doesn't follow the raw limitations But this looks really good either way
THANK YOU so much for this video. Remember playing this game as a small kid, and thinking it was UNFORGIVINGLY hard, haha. I remember being amazed how a friends mom was able to get past the second level. Looking now, I had no idea this game was so short. :D
It certainly does take some mastering of the controls since they actually made your shield a viable tool. I am very happy to hear that you enjoyed this longplay. :) ~JagOfTroy
This game is actually pretty well done, despite the fact that the game has absolutely no story behind it at all. The final Boss music was epic for an 8 bit NES game; it captured a feeling of gritty dread, hopelessness, and woe. Nice playthrough, homie!
You can not only double-jump, but triple or quad jump to the top of the screen if you use a turbo feature (or have very fast fingers). You can swing your sword multiple times on a jump. By holding UP + B, you make a downward stroke--good for slicing those bats up there since you can combine it with a high jump. Also good for enemies on the ground, especially in a jumping attack. You can block the Wizard's diagonal "blue rain" attack by doing a high block with your shield (UP).
@@alex_zhak That's not true at all, by now plenty of emulators cope with such effects. It's just World of Longplays backwards way of doing shit of using barebone settings in all emulators they accept, which often are older ones. On top of that, they refuse to get the older videos up to date.
For many years I was looking for this game, I remember it like it was yesterday, that feeling is nice, I suffered for a while to get through it, but I did it, and it was easy for me, but I remember it with so much affection, the best years I spent with that game, thanks for uploading the video
Yep, it has helped us continue to bring you guys games since we can purchase more and have better equipment to play some of the new stuff that is coming out. I am always grateful for the supporting fans and community that we have behind us. ~JagOfTroy
Omg i finally found it! This was the first ever game i played as a kid 😢 i knew it had a gold knight and was a side scroller but now i finally found it. Hot damn the nostalgia is hitting hard 💪🏻⚔️
Jul But yes. And all was software implemented. Either scan line speed splits or tile cell animated gfx shifting. But heck the visual end result is parallax so who cares!
The final boss on the 3rd form would have given me a heartattack as a kid. That music is creepy and awesome. Does anyone know any other games that have music like this?
OMG!!!your channel has every game I need thank you so much for posting a video about this game I subscribed and liked your video and shared it too!!!!!!
This game has that dark souls vibe to it allot! Also looks pretty difficult for its time as well making me support even more the fact that looks like a dark souls! Some developers showing with games like those in the past that were ahead of their times as well! The graphics are awesome the music as well kicks some serious ass! And the final boss is scary as fuck,i believe it could easily be a conan game as well!
Oh man, the timing is hard to get on this one but it was still pretty fun. The wizards and black knights were the most troublesome fuckers, the last boss too.
Wow. Remember when I played this so long ago. The character swapping mechanic was pretty cool. Was damn hard. Never got past the 'Merlin' before the final two bosses.
I think if you press up, select, and start at the same time it enters a type of tournament mode where you only take on one of each enemy throughout the whole game.
Man! I remember opening that level by mistake and playing only that for days. Did not know it had a button combination, it happened automatically with me.
Wow great game! Yet another one I never heard of. Seems like a mix between Legend of Zelda 2 and Castlevania. The music is a bit repetative at times, but it's still an enjoyable game to watch =) Thanks for the playthrough!
Interesting. I see elements of Zelda 2, elements of the Castlevania series, and multiple elements of the arcade game Hippodrome. In fact this is practically Hippodrome turned into a side scroller.
2:38 Red Wizard 3:55 Kuh-nihg-ut 7:07 Red Axacutioner 8:55 A Red Devil from Ghosts and Goblins 11:35 Singe from Dragon's Lair 13:34 a barbarian with an axe to grind 17:48 Blue Wizard 19:26 Guinan 20:30 Big Dragon and magic mirror, I guess? (final boss)
it remember me astyanax, T.T very great game, i love the sounds , the music sound very tragic coming from a 8 bits game !!!!! sound like castlevania 2, excellent game i must play it just right now
I was about to say, "this game was the Demon's Souls of the NES." (because, let's face it, Dark Souls is fantastic and all, but Demon's Souls was the harder game.)
The soundtrack to this game is incredible!
InstaBlaster
Similar a la banda "Children of bodom"
This is graphically advanced for a NES game. Looks almost like an early Megadrive game.
The release date is pretty on point as well.

ChaNo anything made after 89 was pretty good on graffics unless you were a total noob developer wih no idea what the console could do.
@@ravenstrahd5234 yeah, but this is particularly good and push hardware limits quite a lot.

In those days, the shorter the game, the more ball crushingly hard it was.
I spent whole days trying to beat this game when I was a kid.
Now I'm very surprised that it takes 20 minutes

This is like Castlevania meets Act Raiser.
Only those games are actually good.

You forget about Castle of Dragon
22:19 "You won the game! Enjoy your seizure"!
That's why emulator is worse then console. Console + TV will give you semi-transparency in credits
Pretty much every Atari game, lol.

@@otomo129 good if that is solved
@@otomo129 Solution: Watch my channel instead.
One of the few NES games that look like close to (good) Amiga games. Parallax scrolling, nice animation and good music.

Amazing, so much good memories, truly a great title. 3:47 I remember being stuck for a week on that spot.
:D
A true hidden gem! Game is hard as fuck tho. Still trying to beat it
Have you beaten it yet?

One of my favorite games took forever to beat
It's really tough trying to find old school game footage here on youtube, let alone quality footage of it. It's pretty much why I subbed here. :)
damn this knight has the strongest shield ever! he can block fire, rock projectiles and freaking lightning!
Omg i finally found it! This was the first ever game i played as a kid 😢 i knew it had a gold knight and was a side scroller but now i finally found it. Hot damn the nostalgia is hitting hard 💪🏻⚔️
Next time someone says the NES can't do parallax scrolling, rub this game in their face.
RRThiel there were a lot of games using parralax.
Jul But yes. And all was software implemented. Either scan line speed splits or tile cell animated gfx shifting. But heck the visual end result is parallax so who cares!
Better rub them with Return of the Joker. It clears acne spots, too. Level 7-1 has a 6-layer scrolling, including the foreground.
Check out Joe & Mac on NES.
Metal Storm
i love how they use voice sample as character's attack and damaged sound to this game.
The final boss on the 3rd form would have given me a heartattack as a kid. That music is creepy and awesome. Does anyone know any other games that have music like this?
yeah, play Bram Stockers Dracula. its creepy as hell
Castle of dragon (Dragon Unit) very similar to this game and from Athena too.
Kamen no ninja Akakage has same good music especially huge frog scene. You can clearly listen creepy music.
one of the best 1 stage songs
This game is pretty good, but hard as balls! Don’t think I ever got past the second level the few times I played it.
Makes you wonder if the designers really thought people would jump back and forth constantly to get by some fights
0:53 when he draws the sword and that awesome music starts... most badass way to start a game
The final boss fight has such an ominous atmosphere.
8-bit dark souls
I don't think more than like five 8-bit games, that someone hasn't called Dark Souls.
Barbie: 8 bit Dark Souls.
Now everything if Dark Souls.
*STOP THAT.*
Vampirerockstar Haha. I was only 12 years old boy when I finished that game you called 'Dark Souls' and now I am 37 years old.
Tfw anything remotely challenging = Dark Souls.
OMG!!!your channel has every game I need thank you so much for posting a video about this game I subscribed and liked your video and shared it too!!!!!!
The programmer is actually called Crazy Tom in the Famicom credits, not Stooge Tom, and it fits him like a gauntlet.
This game is literally my childhood

I loved this game as a kid is my favourite game on the NES even though I died a lot and never finished it but it's definitely a hidden gem 💎
Oh man, the timing is hard to get on this one but it was still pretty fun. The wizards and black knights were the most troublesome fuckers, the last boss too.
The cubex55 project is a treasure. Thanks !
My first NES game. :)
Wow. Remember when I played this so long ago. The character swapping mechanic was pretty cool. Was damn hard. Never got past the 'Merlin' before the final two bosses.
3:53 Enemy walkthrough
8:35 That jump
The evil Vishok, furious over his defeat, attempts one final strike at the player by giving them a seizure.
The music of the final is awesome
I think if you press up, select, and start at the same time it enters a type of tournament mode where you only take on one of each enemy throughout the whole game.
I'll have to give that a try
Man! I remember opening that level by mistake and playing only that for days. Did not know it had a button combination, it happened automatically with me.
Dark souls grandfather.
Sir Palamedes 5 is the sword master
Does the knight say 'fuck' when he got hit?
Yes, just like real life
I remember when I finished this game in 1991.. It was very hard for me at that time.
Wow great game! Yet another one I never heard of. Seems like a mix between Legend of Zelda 2 and Castlevania. The music is a bit repetative at times, but it's still an enjoyable game to watch =) Thanks for the playthrough!
El maestro de la espada 🗣️🔥
i played this game in my entire childhood but wasn't know the name. asked to chatgpt by describing it and i'm here, in this video.
This is very technically impressive for the system
I've never played a game quite like this one.
The intro is really cool
Awesome game! Killer music
this is one of those few times u see WoL struggle
felt that dark souls vibe...good thing the game was short. 😅
Plus the music is awesome 👌
and you thought Zelda 2 was hard, this was my 90s memory

17:48 Blue Wizard
19:26 Guinan
20:30 Big Dragon and magic mirror, I guess? (final boss)
Looks nearly impossible to beat, but you proved us wrong!
Final boss definetly atmospheric, final boss music 👌
this game makes you work for it.
Always wanted to play this game when I first saw it in Nintendo Power. But have found a copy.
this might be the first ever soulslike
It has Giant bats, Baby T-Rex, Baby dragon that could jump...
This game is hard, man. and the obstacle at 13:29 ...That's insane
Huh, so it's a non-shitty version of Castle of Dragon? Which one came first?
Getting Zelda 2 vibes
Knights in shining armor and their damsels in distress!! =D
8-bit Dark Souls.
This looks like 16 bit, awesome
more like Shield Master
Great
That floating eyes tho...
loved this game
Badass looking game!
Excellent sword game.
this game is so hard, i gave up and my brother continued it until the end... hahaha good old days
Am I the only one who really likes these kind of side scrolling rpgs?
Great game!! similar to kick master, same scenarios!!! I like it
old memories
Did this game have the same director as Ninja Gaiden? The cutscenes are very similar in style.
Is this an "upgrade" or Castle of Dragon? Looks a lot like that game. Maybe the came company?
2:21 that shielding tho
Its like a remake of "Castle of Dragon"
It took me and some friends around 6 hours of trial and error before we finally beat this game...
Love this game!
If there is a remix for these songs in the game I would love to see a rock remix of this and castle of dragon
Can't agree more
Cubex55: Which boss was the hardest to defeat in this game?
It has been a while since I played it. I don't think any of them gave me a lot of difficulty.

from this game, I started playing tanks in any games :D
Never played this one but it seems like a pretty good game. Gameplay like a combination of Castlevania and The Adventures of Link.
it remember me astyanax, T.T very great game, i love the sounds , the music
sound very tragic coming from a 8 bits game !!!!!
sound like castlevania 2, excellent game i must play it just right now
Looks fun
Castlevania, Faxanadu, Zelda 2 and Actraiser 1&2 vibes.
Final boss music is epic
And, as per the norm, the discussion comparing two games basically boils down to "fuck you, I enjoyed it."
2:40 PAPA SMURF WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!?
3:22 Beware!! Flaming sperm in the air!!
😭😭😭😭 I play this game in NBS Light
The original Souls.
Back in 1993 when I was only a 12 years old boy. I beat that game. Of course you will not believe.
final boss always got me
Reminds me a bit of Castlevania
I was about to say, "this game was the Demon's Souls of the NES." (because, let's face it, Dark Souls is fantastic and all, but Demon's Souls was the harder game.)
The peace on you
This was a hard game, the worst part was that you had to restart from the beginning if you died, I got to the 6th level and I just couldn't...
