    Just enough posh and still capable off roader. Today Range Rovers are rolling i-pods with a lot of issues going on. Time to go back to this: a luxury yet capable and simple enough off road vehicle.

    What a lovely, lovely thing! That old 4 speed ZF sounds like it's had a bit of a work-over too, those changes sound way nicer and faster than I remember in any of my old auto LRs!

    Beautiful classic RR. A popular engine swap for early Range Rovers here in Australia, was the P76 4.4 litre V8, based on the 3.5. Same bore as a 3.5, but longer stroke. Engine block had a taller deck height to accommodate the extra stroke length.

    Love the purity of the two door, gorgeous car. I had a 92 Vouge SE 4 door, I loved it and then a series 1 Discovery XS which was a manual 3.9. The XS was slightly sportier and had been an LR Manager's car so was fully loaded, nippy car with a drink problem but never regretted owning them.

  • @Canalsman

    Quite a contrast with the 1984 Range Rover that I owned once upon a time. It had the 3.5 litre carburetteur engine and three speed auto box.
    Very wallowy, very slow and very thirsty. But I loved it to bits. Great car!

    Timeless elegance! Remember when the Louvre displayed it as an example of contemporary industrial art/design. I was in awe as a kid,dad got a tuscan blue Nigerian assembled one in 1978 for work in West Africa. Years later that passion got me work for LR.

    Lovely to see one again the last one was when they were new and my uncle worked in the paint shop as a supervisor at Land Rover Solihull and bought one home as a demo to put some miles on! Always loved the look of the 2 door but the classic Range Rover anyway the newer ones are nowhere near as good to me

      The best , the 2 doors. I am happy to drive mine every day slowly with the 2.5 l VM diesel . To long to explain, I will not change it for nothing. Today 520.000km.

    Did a restoration on a 1972 range rover in the mid nineties and came across a csk being broken for spares so had the front doors and the full set of leather seats for mine.
    Very nice when all done with electric windows and leather interior.

    Lovely car. I didn’t know that was the first time they fitted antiroll bars.
    It’s not the US that use the term “dampers”, they tend to use “shocks” or “shockers”. Damper is the correct term - shock absorption is by the tyres and springs.

  • @markonmotoring
    @markonmotoring 2 года назад +1

    That V8 sounds wonderful.
    Though I was never a fan of the Range Rover I must admit this three door is aging very well, something if a timeless design and the spec and engine make it the one to have.
    It's great to hear that it gets used too.

    I never heard of the csk until now, that is a cracking example. It looks like a trailer queen but appearances can be decieving. I noticed the V8 has no distributor but two 'distributorless' 4-cylinder coil packs mounted up front... was this standard on later models?

  • @seancooke7332
    @seancooke7332 2 года назад

    I have always loved the Range Rover, especially in 5 doors but you have now explained the reasoning for the 3 doors of the CSK and it really does make it exclusive.
    I could never ever run a V8 but I so admire those who do. However, I have watched Billy Connolly' World Tour of Scotland numerous times where he travels to all the gigs and locations in a beautiful burgundy Vogue Turbo Diesel manual and though it may not have had the grunt, every other magic ingredient was there. I have driven a 1996 Defender Tdi and I loved every moment of it so if I ever find a decent Range Rover Tdi, who knows ?
    This CSK is just so special though. I'm watching it again now.

  • @cornishrider
    @cornishrider 2 года назад

    Magnificent example and what a sound! If it were mine I'd be tempted to reverse engineer it by removing the front spoiler, and fitting the old vertical grille and black Rostyles! Sadly I remember when these were worth very little and a local guy had one for a work van and swapped out the V8 for a Tdi...

    Definitely my favourite ever Range Rover. So glad I've finally got to see one in action.

  • @RichieRouge206

    This is vastly more interesting and appealing than any modern Range Rover. Where the Evoque is pretentious and badly made, this is fun and from an era where things were engineered. The sound of the engine and transmission is just brilliant. Great review Matt!

    The two door was produced until 1992.
    When the four door was introduced in 1981 demand in the UK for the two door fell away so it became an export only model.
    The two door shell was chosen for the CSK as its lighter weight enhanced the performance.

    I like this! Beautiful classic Range Rover, reminds me of the imported US Range Rovers minus two doors.
    And I know that Range Rover did allow modifications to the 3.9 litre V8 because it was underpowered. Makes it more livable, although economy is dismal, even by today's standards.

  • @WWarped1

    What a great find, such a beast. Thanks. You think with such a long production run, that more limited editions would've been made. A see a 25th Anniversary edition about from time to time. Surely one of the rarest Range Rover Classics has to be the Monteverdi Safari or Sahara (I think one of them was a tarted up Range Rover Classic with something like a 7.2 V8)? That is excluding the popemobiles, military, and emergency service vehicles.
