I must confess-- I am a strict 'non-believer' and that is where I will stay/remain. However, I have been/am one of the devout followers of your follower. And to that end I would like to say I quite enjoyed this lecture. The first one of religiosity of late that related to me. I mean, yes, there was Kierkegaard, there was Kant. Despite circumstances, I feel people 'need stories', or a sense that 'not everything is chance and fiction'. For me, I find, say impossible to think it is HaShem, because so many people have their hand in the game and so many already know, if anything-- This is the very opposite of G-d. Would there be, it would be a silent grace. Or love from a true G_d would not be a prescription, or an indiction. I also worry-- I mean even in 'modern times', to slip out of the fold a little here, even the Japanese came to laud the 'excellence'-- though they were quickly modernizing, of some, fictional more ideal 'peasant life'. The sense that things were 'better' and yet there was 'essential sin'.. Is pretty universal. I guess the question to me, in my mind, is then... So... And I'll give benefit of the doubt here-- We just repeat and replicate that ? Accepting a fall from grace also accepts-- Well, we are all faults, we can never *really* actually be or become better. G_d showed up and it is downhill from here. Even as a non-believer... I don't want to think like that. Or what is the point ? If we can not hope to exceed the goodness of G-d, what ought we strive to achieve. That said, thanks for the tales-- As mentioned I felt I could relate. -A

    Thank you for this shiur.
    I have a few questions.
Yosef haTzaddik was on a different level to us, so how are we, in our generation, supposed to emulate him?
Yes, Hashem didn't show himself to Yosef but Yosef was far closer to Hashem than any of us are today AND he was Yaakov's son. His respect for his father kept him going. How are we supposed to keep going? We are not tzaddikim and Hashem hasn't "talked" to us for over 2000 years so the challenge is so much greater for us. Does our strength only come from mesora or also something else?
Lastly, what was it in Yosef Yosef that made him so special? Why did Hashem choose him to be the tzaddik? What were his unique qualities and strengths that made him fitting for his challenges and how do we acquire them?

Thank you for your comments. While it's true that Yosef was a righteous young man - what made him righteous is his ability to overcome hardships despite challenges. You can do the same. His strength flows through each of us.
