Larval stages and metamorphosis of a starfish

  • This particular video shows brachiolaria stage of a starfish larva (Asterias rubens). The animals were filmed at Helgoland, North Sea. Their size is approximately 1 mm. At the back side of these brachiolariae, you can see the formation of a juvenile starfish disk.

    If you think the starfish hatch as tiny adult-like animals - you are wrong. They start their lives in the ocean as something completely different. Their larvae are pure madness. By drifting with the ocean currents and shapeshifting, the starfish species make sure that their kin will survive.
