Japanese almost overran the Korean peninsula and had Ming dynasty not intervened with their 100k army, Joseon Dynasty would cease to exist. Therefore, Ming was the major factor in defeating Hideyoshi's invasions.

      @delmont2793 Год назад +4

If the Ming army had not participated in the war, it would have been impossible to win the war with the Joseon army and navy alone. I admit that too. The Ming army had a large number of people, so it would have put a great psychological burden on the Japanese army.
However, there are not many battles where the Ming army actually won properly.
The Ming army underestimated the Japanese army and, like the early Joseon army, considered them to be barbarians.
The Ming army underestimated the Japanese army and was defeated several times.
The purpose of the Ming Dynasty's participation in the war was only to avoid dragging the war into their Chinese soil.
The Ming armies were not eager to win because they were not fighting on their own soil, preferring a negotiated solution to a fight.
Joseon was very angry with the Japanese and wanted to annihilate them, but the Ming Dynasty avoided fighting and insisted on negotiations, giving the Japanese forces time to regroup and prolonging the war.

The withdrew of Japanese force was the consequence of three reasons. Firstly the strong inference of Ming Dynasty impeded Japan from occupying whole Korea and finally made the situation into a stalemate. Then it came to the turning point of death of Toyotomi, which provided the stage for Tokugawa to take over the power, thus forced the successor of Hideyoshi to retreat. Finally it came to the historical victory of general Lee. We should not belittle anyone of the above factors.

During the 2nd invasion, they may or may not need Ming's help if they could deal with the Japanese at sea. But since Joseon shot themselves in the foot by removing their capable admiral, and allowing significant amount of Japanese to land, it's very possible that Joseon would fall had Ming not enter the fight.
But during the 1st invasion, I don't see how Joseon could have survive without Ming.

@@user-pf5ek9pf7f While the death of Toyotomi Hideyoshi did play a role in the withdrawal of Japanese forces during the Imjin Wars, it is not accurate to claim that Ming China lost to the Japanese. It is important to recognize the significant role played by Ming China in the Imjin Wars. Ming's military intervention, naval dominance, and the accomplishments of Admiral Yi Sun-sin all contributed to impeding Japan's occupation of Korea. The combined efforts of Ming China, Admiral Yi, and the stalemate on the battlefield were instrumental in the ultimate retreat of the Japanese forces. Let's appreciate the contributions of all parties involved in shaping the outcome of this historical conflict.

By the same token, Japanese and Korean will also try to glorify their part in this war,
I look at the end result rather than who claimed what
To be fair, Korean did almost single handed destroyed Japanese's supply chain from their mainland. But on land, it was the Chinese who defeated the Japanese, I don't think many will dispute that.

It was just that Korea was so poor that local procurement was difficult.

I see where you are getting at, you are focusing on the naval battles while I'm talking about the war as a whole. The navel battle you talked about happened near the end of 2nd Japanese invasion, where according to some account, the combined navy of Joseon and Ming neutralized 10k Japanese. Throughout the war, however, it's mostly Joseon's navy only wreaking havoc on the Japanese.
But the point is, this war was won on land and ended at sea.

You don't see the point, Ming army had been using firearm against Mongol and Manchu around this time frame on scale that Joseon cannot even imagine. Rockets and cannons can do serious damage over a longer range than the Japanese arquebus. And Ming did have arquebus, though I'm not sure if they use it in this war or not.
Not to mention Ming's regular fighting troops were more than a match for their Japanese counterpart.

  • @timcabc

In terms of firepower Ming had arquebus, rockets, and cannons. (Japanese don't have cannons.) In terms of experience, they had been fight with Mongol and Manchu. Does this make Ming army far superior than the Joseon army, and therefore be able to inflict greater damage on enemy with less causality? Also, if what you say is true, how did Ming army force Joseon army into danger zones if they were not willing to do it to defend their homeland.?
