I love this interpretation. I totally don't mind the tempo, it's crisp, lively, his articulation is fantastic. Superb registration and overall you feel "this is totally how I intend to play this" and I am convinced. Another interpretation to my set of favourite interpretations of this piece :)
A little fast, but otherwise perfect. Listening on a system with an 18" subwoofer and the low notes shake the entire house. the recording is EXCELLENT... we need more high quality organ recordings for playback on modern systems with subs... great job Mr. Marshall
Brilliant! Thanks for the compliment on the recording! All our recordings are subwoofer happy so please check out the other recordings we do on www.base2music.store.
Wayne Marshall is a madman on the organ! An absolutely brilliant performance of a masterpiece! And no, I don’t think the tempo is too fast. Diane Bish plays it about as fast as well. On the contrary, it doesn’t sound right when played too slow, as if someone is trying to learn the piece.
Err..have you heard how Widor actually plays his own work? Maestro Marshall who I greatly respect may well have an amazing technique regarding staccato etc, but you lose the accents of the piece going too fast, in my opinion
Stunning!! The articulation throughout is brilliant, hats off to Wayne and the organ builders, he showed just what he can do putting the organ through its paces in one take!!
Very good articulation and very clear playing, in addition to a very effective registration- an utterly satisfying performance, even if it is on the fast side. Wayne Marshall is definitely one of the finest organists of our time. I find the sound quality to be amazing as well- even with RUclips's heavy compression algorithm.
@@JakePurches-Base2music I noticed that someone else in the comments section played it on 2 Devialet Phantom speakers which run you about $3,000 each- the fact that a RUclips video can do justice to a speaker setup like that is just amazing.
This is the biggest organ here in Portugal with 6500 pipes and 90 stops. Lately, there was a ruffati organ installed in 1952 with 12000 pipes and 152 stops. In 2016 mascioni house did a reconstruction of the organ increasing the sound quality despite this one being smaller than the previous instrument. In April, I was going to play it but unfortunately I couldn't due to virus situation. The recording is suberb, an incredible organist in an incredible instrument
Thank you for your kind comments. The CD that this comes from features the Dupré Passion Symphony and Franz Schmidt 'Fredigundis' and others on the CD - Wayne Marshall - Passion symphony' from us at www.base2music.store
I love these fast playing music, so much cold shivers over my body hearing these fast organ music, I'm an organist myself but if I play nothing happens but if someone else plays I get cold shivers of the awesome well played music, Bravo to the organist
I know it's faster than some of my fellow organists might like, but I find it so much more exciting this way. This is the way Gerre Hancock used to play it. Unbelievably exciting.
In spite of the tempo, very clean and crisp with care to details and full use of this magnificent instrument. A very interesting interpretation of this brilliant piece of organ music.
I'd say as an organist you will probably work with tempo also according to the acoustic of the cathedral. If it's a bit too dry, you'll need to play faster to satisfy different requirements of the music. I have no problems with this tempo, it's not "distastefully" fast, it's just very crisp.
I prefer when it's played according to the composition and the value of each note 🎼🎵🎶 and not faster than it should be, but said that, he played it excellent.
Absolutely agree. I can't actually listen to this. I understand about interpretation and artistic licence, but having heard the tempo that Widor himself played it this just sounds over the top.
Stimply stunning and stupendous! Although supposedly Widor himself opposed to such a tempo for his famous Toccata, it works amazingly well, once one hears the overwhelming effect, of course provided it is played with such meticulous articulation as displayed here by Wayne ... Also, this is the first time that I see the cross-handed passage shortly before the end played on one manual instead of two ... All the more praise to you Wayne!
This performance of the Toccata was Fantasic.... my grandfather arranged Widors Toccata for an Accordion Symphony orchestra.. (i do have an mp3 file of the 1964 recording of it) my grandfather was a head of his time.... This piece is diffacult to play even for an accordion symphonic orchestra... my gpa did this with 26 members and it became the signature last piece of a concert... the orchestra even won a competition playing it back in the late 50s or early 60s before i was born... everyone that new my gpa said he was nuts for this (from the stories i heard) my gpa was a professional accordionist till the last year before he passed away... i always look at how different people play the piece and the tempo as well again this was a great performance :)
11 seconds of reverb.....absolutely incredible. I'll admit I like slower interpretations, but the quality of the recording and that last 12 seconds made up for it. :-P
faster and faster .... One day we'll have this artwork in less than a minute. And I can do it for you in ten seconds, with a big board placed on the keyboards, on which we will put two anvils. This interpretation negates the tempo, which is precise so that the work is understandable. And the use of treble and metallic plays is incidental, for shine, not as a base. This is outrageous, and does not transcribe anything from the original symphonic work.
Dear J Mariliou - I have noticed you have criticised this piece many times now. I think you have made your point. If you would like to make a recording and show us and Mr Marshall how this should be played please do so and send us the link.
@@EmeraldPixelGamingEPG Widor was a very old man in that film. And when composers are dead, the artiste decides how it should be best played. There are plenty of slow versions and fast versions and medium versions. I was of the opinion it should be slower too till I heard this one! Now I love it.
What a fine interpretation, in one word dazzling! Can I also take the opportunity to thank you for your majestic playing of the Franz Scmidt prelude in D. A very difficult piece that truly came alive by your interpretation! I personally prefer organs in an aucustical setting and your handling of that dimension in this recording was also superb. Thank you for sharing your immense gift of playing and interpretive skills.

exactly the tempo Jean Guillou played first in Berlin St.Mathias on the Seifert organ during his first recordings
Excellent. Superb. Magnificent. Wonderful. A tribute to the Most High. Thank you, sir

Perfect speed for my ears, best I’ve hear so far.

Way too fast for my taste. Played 0.75 it sounds right.
Kinda fast. However! It's far better than some I've seen that kills the piece by playing it way too slow.

Talented but I agree too fast, almost two minutes shorter than a recording of Widor playing his toccata
Too Caffeinated, sounds like a 1970s hockey game.
