- Hi, guys! I finally finished building this UPS. It has 2 outputs of 12V and 19V and a big capacity, even bigger with better li-ion cells. A lot of you asked me to make it and because you are my favorite subscribers :) here you go!
This is a big project with a lot of details, so I divided it into 2 videos.

Thank you! I've been gathering details for building this exact project for the last few days and just stumbled upon your video!
6:30 to save some current/heat/power in a relay coil - you may run into problems using lower voltage because the contacts will arc more using a lower voltage- with less force the contacts move slower and arc more. Also, an old relay may fail to work as well at lower voltage.
The cure is to use the full relay coil voltage rail, but fit a few forward bias diodes bewteen the negative side of coil and ground. This reduces the voltage to the coil normally in steady-state conditions - but here is a trick - bridge the diodes with a large electrolytic capacitor (+ve side to lower side of relay coil, negative side to gnd) - the inrush current to the capacitor will create a pulse of higher current to activate the relay with more force. It will still arc when it disconnects but half the problem is solved. This was known as a "relay saver" in years gone by, though I've just searched for a diagram and all Google shows is ones with transistors instead. More diodes = lower voltage in steady state.
Remember to include a reverse-polarity protection diode across the coil for EMF protection.
Also works for fans - use lower voltage to run but higher pulse to start - often a 12V fan will run at 4 or 5 volts but needs 7 or so to start reliably to overcome friction. If you don't get much effect add more capacitance. Cheap large-value capacitors will do - no need for very low ESR ones. You can also tap into the diode string at different points to give different running voltages. I use up to 10x 1N4001 diodes for PC fans - this gives me 12 volts minus (10*0.6V) so this is 11.4, 10.8, 10.2, 9,6, 9.0, 8.4, 7.8, 7.2. 6.6, 6.0 volts depending on where I connect the fan. The capacitor must go from the fan bottom side to the gnd and the selected diodes, not across ALL diodes.
10 diodes is 10cents (assumes 1N4007) , so biggest cost is capactor.

IMO, it's better to make it 5S config and only use the 19V adapter from ASUS.
Not only it reduces complexity a lot, by not needing any charging module and relay, it also make you possible to double the capacity by placing 5S2P in there.
The downside is you can only charge the battery to around 70%, BUT that's also a benefit that it will boost the longevity of your cell, and also you can 2P your cell to counter this.

instead of all this hassle get a PD powerbank 20000mAh and PD trigger boards with 19v and 12v value then connect the dc output from the boards directly to the router
Using the diodes is a good idea, but you can go lower in voltage and still get reliable switching if you add a capacitor in parallel to your diode string. about 100uf at 25v etc. the cap charging current will bypass your diode string giving the coil a good pulse. this method also works for a resistor instead of a string of diodes. this is how I stopped door lock solenoids from heating up.

You could place the fan in a way that the blowing part should be towards inside and the air in part outside it will cool better

you should make a transformer with two outputs and add simple voltage regulators and few capacitors :)

hi. I wanted a switch to disconnect the battery, in case I want to check something about the battery, while the devices are running. or if I want to temporary power the devices only from the chargers and I don't want to unplug and reconnect all the cables, just turn off the battery switch.

P.S. Thats reminds me, I got my crappy cheap 12v dremel like that from Harbor Freight. Yep, it is crap but a good voltage draw to test stuff which is why I bought it... Lol

Most Router that work at more that 12v, internally have voltage regulator that can work betwen 10v and 24v, sure that router uses 19v can work with 12v

It will have a few more components, I can help you with a few ideas.
You should VERY clearly mark the battery polarity on the socket and the battery. It is EXTREMELY exciting putting them in backwards in these kinds of holders because they dont have a spring. If there is a spring it will glow and deform and break circuit or limit current... the better solid ones like you are using will not.

Hi, just asking, if i onlye need 12V output, isi it OKAY to use 3s BMS with 6 battery? Not 8 like yours??
Hi. a 3S battery has a voltage range between 12.6V and 8.1V. if you want a stable 12V output, you will need a CC/CV buck/boost converter. it works, but it will have a lower efficiency, so a part of the battery energy will be wasted. because a buck/boost converter works with a lower efficiency that a simple buck converter.

yes. but it may take longer to turn on the UPS and charge the capacitors.

ı wouldn't do that in this way.i would use the battery, BMS and inverter,we have certificated adapters of it and the inverter will give pure sin wave. 100W pure sin inverters have 96% up eff. So it would be much reliable ,cheaper and efficient way of this . Great work anyway have a nice day

Hi, i bought a 3s bms for my wifi router, which works fine , can i charge it with 12v charger of router or should i use any charging module.
hi. you need a charger with a voltage higher than 12.6V, otherwise the charging process will not be completed and the cells will loose capacity in time, because they are continuously charged and don't reach the overcharge cut-off voltage. you need to check what voltage the BMS need.

@@Sorin_DIY i do has a modem and router which works on 12v (each). By connecting those in parallel ,both turns on but the modem restarts. How can fix that? I added a relay that turns off the battery supply when the power returns. But while charging the BMS with voltage booster the power from batteries was going to voltage booster .

hi. I tested it with both outputs and it has a working time of about 3.5 hours. the router uses a lot of power. but with better lithium cells it will last longer.

Sorin, would have not been easier to stack the batteries on top one another in a 4 cell top 4 cell bottom configuration and use a plug with either a strap, a clip or screws to hold them in so they can be removed at any time?
It would give a bit more space and still have enough air flow for the batteries.

While that is true and correct. Sorin stated his friend wanted to be able to change the batteries easily. Doing what you suggested would make it a bit hard. IMOP :-)

@@BrucesWorldofStuff It's a good point you make, but as an example:
USE an XT60/XT90 connector,
Use a 4x cell connector back to back (insluating between the holdersand wiring for required voltage)
Cut/make a door (either clippable or screw in) and glue to the side of the call holder.
This means means the cells can be removed and replaced easily, not really complicating the initial design.
@@liamburge463 Oh, Ok... I see what you mean. I was just going off what he said in the video. I had a Ham Radio mic that you had to take apart to change the battery. It sucked. I made a square cutout in the bottom as a lid I used the cutout and velcroed the battery and cut out plate in and now it it easy... Lol

hi. I wanted to make it simple for anyone to remove the cells. and I just wanted to use battery holders with clamps, not screws or other components. if the UPS was mine, I would have arranged the cells differently.
@@Sorin_DIY I like the battery holders myself. No welding or soldering on the battery's. Just wire up the holder and plug in the batteries... As for the polarity issue I paint the 'positive' end white with paint and then paint a red '+' on it... :-D

What is middle blue preset in cc cv module ?
I think you can use it to adjust the full charge indicator LED (middle), so it will light up when the battery is charged to the desired voltage. but I'm not 100% sure, I've never used it.

I think the fan was drawing more current because you had it in freespace (i.e., no resistance from forcing the air through the enclosure). Just a guess on my part.

The reason why your cells has lower capacity than what they promised is maybe there were sitting more than a year. Did you tried to charge discharge it 5 6 times
hi. I think that's the reason. in the first test the cells had 1500mAh. after 4 cycles ~1650mAh. I don't think they have more to give.
