  • On a recent trip to Tasmania's East Coast, I managed a couple of hours metal detecting with the Minelab Manticore and the M8 coil!
Come and see what I found...!

It would be great if we could see you polish up the coins or tumbled them to see the process. Thanks, Bruce

Yeah it’s a beautiful place that’s for sure. It would be interesting to see what you can find in the water at the right locations!

Nice scenery down there , The pre-decimals were neat, and I got to wondering if you have found a round Fifth cent coin considering no detectorists to date have pulled one up only multi sided ones
which is most odd if not a bit perplexing . But some good finds and lead is worth saving these days . Cheers Mate👍👍👍😎💨🏴‍☠☮☮☕☕💡😊

I’ve never found one detecting, but I have a collection of them I bought several years back. They were discontinued when it become evident the silver content made the coin worth more in scrap value than 50c, so the bank recalled them. Many were kept by collectors and others with an interest in the silver, but many were melted down I believe…

Stunning beaches indeed. A few good finds. Would like to see them after you clean them up? Can you also recommend a good tumbler ?

Unfortunately the coins I find in these locations are usually beyond cleaning, but they’re still heaps of fun to find!

Beautiful beach and with all the rocks using a scoop is fairly worthless. Nice old coins, not many here on the local beach here. Been detecting about 3 years now and only found 1 coin prior to 1950 and maybe 3-5 in the 50’s era.

Beach detecting can be very frustrating, but every so often we find something amazing and it keeps us going until the next one!

Last year you found a plate with a eagle seating on a shield with 15 stars/1 big one. I known I've seen it somewhere but can't remember, I'm fairly certain it is associated with American history.,
Then I thought of another metal detector in the US, Green Mountain Metal Detecting on RUclips. He might be able to give you an idea of what it is.
Just a thought and I'll keep looking, its driving me bonkers.. PS love you adventures

I’m sure it’s American. I’d love to know how old it is. It’s a good idea to send it to Green Mountain - I’ll try that.

I use the standard beach general mode. You can’t really rely on the target ID numbers, as the mineralised salt water throws it out. Instead concentrate on the tone, check that the signal is repeatable from different directions, and check the 2D map to make sure the target trace is on (or at least touching) the non-ferrous line. Good luck!

What do you do with the coins that you find? Do you clean them or leave the patina alone?
