  • How to grow Plum Trees from seed!
Another video in a new series about growing plum trees - or at least my second attempt at it! The first one failed because I transplanted the germinated plum seeds before the roots were large enough to adapt from the ziploc bag into soil. I've learned my lesson and I've restarted the series.
This update marks the trees 5+ month mark. I have topped him and repotted him since the last video, and have taken him outside.
I didn't include the other tree as it is looking more and more like a peach tree - I'll include it in the next video so we can see what's going on there.
    Thanks for watching!

Sorry for the delay but we are now ready to get the second series of Growing Plum Trees from Seeds kicked off!
I do have a few questions for everyone in this video:
    1) Should I top the Plum Sapling?
    2) Should I leave it alone and just adjust the shelving?
    3) Should I go ahead and transplant it outside now?
    Other thoughts:
    1) One of the Saplings appears to have Peach tree leaves? Is it going to be a peach tree or do the leaves just look like a peach tree's leaves but likely a plum hybrid?
The plum seeds that I am using in this series were purchased from an organic grocery store and I left the plums in the fridge for more than 3 extra months - a form of stratification, if you will.
After several months in the cold fridge (when they were near rotting) I removed the seeds. Then I used a small hammer to crack the seed shell and remove the actual seeds.
Next, I tested the seeds for viability by soaking them in water for about an hour to ensure the seeds sank (this usually means that they are viable seeds).
I then used the wet paper towel/ziploc bag method to create a mini greenhouse for them and placed them in a warm dark place.
Finally, after 3 weeks, 2 of them sprouted. I waited another week to ensure the roots were healthy enough and there was some green seed leaves emerging before I transplanted them.
It's been 3 months now and both are doing well.
One I topped for a test to see how it grows compared to a non-topped one.
I am excited to see how these plum trees grow over the next several months.
    Thanks again for watching!

Hi Rob, Thanks for your Sharing your video. This year is my second year of growing everything in Grow Bags. I actually have 3 peach trees 3 apples, 2 cherries, etc. If your issue for space, i do recommend in growing them in Grow bags. The biggest advantage you have is you can control their height and growth. But they Will FRUIT for sure. The other advantage is that your trees will be mobile. In case you need to move or whatever. I hope the best for you.

For the last two years, I've potted up my Moorpark Apricot stones over the winter. In late winter up they come, growing on outside shelves. By the time it's early summer here, they are ready to sell at $15 each. I managed 40 last season and hope for my this winter. I've also sourced some Black Doris plum seeds and will do the same. Thanks for your help.

Had a few branches at the bottom of mine as well, kept them on there as sacrificial branches just to help with trunk thickening, i'll prune them off later. i don't want a tall tree so i hard prune to encourage lateral growth. Excited to see how it turns out. saw your update, this one grew huge! good work!

Ya I'd leave it over winter....lots of root room, I imagine it may still be too big a shock to try and reboot before spring, I'd leave him probably another season or two before putting him in the ground considering how young & fragile it still is.....being grown from seed n all

rick, thanks for that good video, a couple of questions: 1- at the beginning, do you cut the branches off the trees at any time of the year, after or before they give fruit, and in what season would be best: summer, winter, spring?, and, once your cutting start blooming how do you take it off the first pot, you just pull them out or gently tip the pot so the cuttings can come out nicely? thanks

I have two questions for you: Have you ever tried growing a persimmon from seed?
Do you have any experience or advice for germinating a seed from a plum (or other fruit) from a parent fruit that’s not quite ripe?
I want to plant a tree from the fruit of a tree that’s going to be cut down. Unfortunately the fruit is still young and small. I don’t know how much time I have to let it tree-ripen before the sad day.
Any advice would be extremely helpful. I’m not sure if you can private message on RUclips but please message me if you can! Thank you so much. Good luck with your plum tree! I learned so much from this video set. Thank you!

      @RobBackyardGardenerr  6 лет назад

Christina K hello. I have not tried persimmons yet but want to. For the Plum, I’d leave it in until the last possible day. I’d remove the branch that has the fruits with the fruit still attached. Then I’d counter ripen it as long as I could and then place the fruit only in the fridge for 3 months. Then I’d try to grow them. I have grown watermelon from seeds that were immature by allowing the fruit to sit out for months. I hope this helps.

How old is the plum tree? Growing from seed or purchasing a tree?
Seed = anytime after a harvest, like late fall.
Tree = early spring, but can plant in early fall depending on your zone.
