- A lot of RUclipsrs are making wooden toggle videos lately. I think I have a better way.

Thanks, Jim, that notch idea gives me yet another good way to get the job done!
Great thing to remember. Thank you for showing this to us, Jim. Now I will have to go buy a Tracker knife. Stay safe and stay cool
Haha! You ca make quick notches with the edge of a sharp-edged rock 🤠👍
You sir are inspirational.
Great idea to make the notch in the toggle. I usually use a toggle with a marlin spike hitch to hang my pack or my hammock. It all works......Take care, Bluefin.
Yes it all works. Thanks Mike.
Great video, Jim! Thank you! I do the same except with my pack! I use a clove hitch to quickly attach to my toggles!
Thanks Jen. Whatever works for you is the right way to do things. 🤠👍🏼
I will definitely try it out. Thanks for sharing. Take care and stay safe.
Thanks Johnny.
I never did drill my toggles Jim.. but I did drill a couple this weekend because I want to try Blackie's Tensioning toggle method.. Can never have too many tricks in the book lol
Exactly!
That is one KISS implementation!
One more to the toolbox. Thanks!
You bet!
good idea thanks for showing us your way , in making the notch for the toggle good to know . many uses for this love it .
You bet 🤠👍
Thanks Jim, I learned something I didn't know!
It really does make more sense to cut a notch in lieu of making a hole. Thanks for sharing!
Glad it was helpful!
Your videos are helpful. Fellow survival enthusiast here. Best instruction I ever got was from a Anishinaabe Vietnam Vet, Steve Naganashe
Thanks Andrea. I wish I had a Native American mentor/teacher. There is so much I would like to learn.
Muskrat Jim, Good video. Nice and easy to make and use.
Notches are easy with a Tracker… a lot more work without one.
Great tip and video, Cousin!
Glad it was helpful! 🤠👍
I’ve recently seen another take on toggles. It may have been on Blackie Thomas’s channel and he shows cutting “7” notches on each end of a toggle. I can’t effectively explain how to attach them to a ridge line but it gives an equally effective use of the design as the two holed toggle. Worth a look. Another technique for the bushcrafter.
Looks like the setup works great.
Whatever works, right? I wanted to show the notch maker on the Tracker knife in action.
God bless you for taking the time to watch my video!
Pretty slick brother.
Thanks for the video
No problem 👍
Hi. Yes I would agree with you. Putting a hole through the middle like that would weaken it and also run the risk of spitting it while doing it. Plus of course, they are much faster to make the way you are making them. I make them the same way.
Thanks for sharing.
Hi Jim, great video. I must have missed it a while back. Just wondering, do you have any issue if the only trees 🌲available are much thinner trunk🎋than in the video? In other words, do you compensate for a skinny tree by raising the height of the loop to compensate for the extra slack in the line? I hope this question makes sense, Much appreciated! 😀
Makes Perfect Sense To Me, Tracker Sure Has Been Riding Your Hip For A Spell, Thanks Jim ! ATB T God Bless
That Tracker is my connection to my Dad. So it’s my favourite bush knife.
@@MuskratJim I fully understand.
@@MuskratJim Much Agreed, Jim !
Great video
Glad you enjoyed it
Thank you that was very educational
I'm glad you found it useful.
Simple yet effective. :)
That’s the objective 🤠👍🏼
Really appreciate
You are most welcome! Thank you for watching! 🤠👍
yes toggles are very handy, thats a good idea you have there
Thanks for watching.
Awesome video
Thanks Dave!
@@MuskratJim enjoyed it
This is how I do it but just use the knife to cut a V notch. Great tips man. What part of NB you in? I'm out near the junction.
I’m in Miramichi
Well done.
Thank you Jessie
@@MuskratJim Your welcome Jim.
Awesome Jim how’s the Miss doing I hope she is well y’all take care
Thanks Rose. She's suffering with a lot of arthritis pain these days. She'll be turning 61 next month, not as spry as she used to be.
When cutting a notch, You remove the surface tension of the toggle all the way round, which will weaken the it severely, compared to drilling holes where You only remove a little of the surface tension. Having said that, I don´t think it will do much difference because using toggles the pressure will always be more on the cordage than actually on the toggle.
I suppose you're right.
Like your way better brother. Your right that a drilled hole will make it the weak point depending on the load.
A lot of the BIG channels I follow were all drilling holes and I said, “F##k that. Me and my Tracker have a better way!”
Great idea for hanging your pack at camp!
For a second I thought you had a cigar Jim in the thumbnail picture 😁😊
Haha! Yes a lot of people have said that and now I see a cigar when I look too 😀😀
I will search my video for a better thumbnail 🤠👍🏼
I replaced the thumbnail :)
The toggle does not need to be very strong! The point of the toggle is to hold the knot- the knot is what you hang the pack loop on - not the toggle. The hole/grove is to keep the toggle attached to the knot. You can use a much smaller stick and still be ok. Look at hammock hanging videos.
Thanks Zoe 🤠👍
So cutting a groove all the way round weakens the toggle less than drilling a small hole? Or weakens it not at all?
the amount of weakening is negligible as long as the toggle is the thickness of your thumb and the notch is mostly just removing the bark.
And it is re-usable for light tasks.
What pack is that you have ?
Sorry, I just saw you comment now. That pack is a Chinese version of the Rothco Medium Transport pack. I've added a couple of M.O.L.L.E. pouches to increase it's carrying capacity. I did a review video of it here: ruclips.net/video/efqM9BjpmKI/видео.html
👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks James
Muskrat Jim thank you for your idea sir toggle wooden part instead of drilling it it’s much better thank you for sharing that……🇵🇱🧸🛶⛺️🏳️🌈👩🍳🇺🇸
My pleasure, Margo 🤠👍🏼🇨🇦
Whether one drills a hole or cuts a groove, the toggle is weakened: it's six of one and half a dozen of the other. I don't bother: I tie a loop in the rope and then flip a girth hitch around the toggle. To tie anything up or down, I pass the end between the loops of the girth hitch. That way I don't have rope against rope as I tension up. "That toggle", as some Americans tend to put it, "ain't goin' nowhere."
Do you prefer a backpack or a have-not-sack?😁
I can pack more in a backpack, so I prefer a backpack. Once there's snow on the ground, I prefer my sled 🤠👍🛷❄❄
@@MuskratJim that almost make sense, keep 'um coming.👏
Let me see now you got a one inch stick, you cut in a quarter inch notch all the way around basically that's four quarter inch notches, four quarters equals 1 inch, other words you ain't got to stick left! exactly how does that work? 🤔
Funny math...
Another variant, but IF you would like to view and comment on my video, about the Robert Toggle No Knot Ridgeline, you would see why it requires TWO holes in the Toggle and in no way does it impair the integrity of the Toggle whatsoever because the tension is along the length and not at 90 degrees. For suspending a Backpack, I too would never dream of thinking to put a hole in a Toggle. I think with my system that with your One Good Arm it could help you a lot as no need for a Taught line Hitch or Trucker's Hitch or Evenk Knots to be able to erect and very taught quick take up and takedown Ridgeline. Thank you and excuse me if I self promote because if I don't, I simply get swallowed by the BIG Channels who won't give me a mention - that's YT for you.
Yes I understand about the BIG channels. I will check out your videos. 🤠👍🏼
I just subbed your channel and looked for your Robert’s Toggle but only found your ‘short’ video promising a future video.
