A cable car accident in China in 1999 took the lives of 14 people, including the mother and father of a little boy whose parents lifted him to safety before they died. The song is being sung from the viewpoint of the boy as he watches his parents be taken from him. The lady who wrote the song ultimately adopted that little boy.
Yes, the only thing the boy's father managed to do was hand him over to the rescuers... and the cable car collapsed into the abyss along with all the people...
