  • Can you really develop raw land into a homestead with little to no budget? How can you buy cheap land? And once you get that cheap land you can't leave in it...its too CHEAP!! So how do you clear land with no budget? Or how do you build that off grid bug out location on a budget?
    FRIENDS!!!!
    We are blessed some amazing friends that wanted to come and help us develop our homestead in exchange for some fun camping!! We traded labor for hot dogs and smores! Yay baby smores!!!!
    Also during this time we had a chance to try out the new Ego 56v Power+ 15" String Trimmer. Yep!! We used a brushless cordless string trimmer weed eater to cut down our crazy weeds here at the future Texas homestead build. This thing is AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!

    Finding your "Our Texas Homestead Build " playlist has been all inspiring! My husband and I just purchased 4 acres last month on which we plan to build our log cabin home, and are most excited to get started ! All the wind was quickly let out of our sail once we started receiving quotes for camping/building permits, excavating services, electric pole, well/pump, and septic installs, which surmounted to a whopping $15,500!!!! Thanks to your video, we've been able to make a plan and shop for tools which we can use to begin clearing our land, bringing us one step closer to building our future home site. Blessings to you and your beautiful family and thank you for sharing!!

      +Cynthia Richardson that's exciting!! We just started putting together our floor plans for the shed. You're right, all the necessities to make our plan come to life are definitely pricey at the end of the day. When the land is raw, there really is so much to be done to make it a home. I'm so glad this channel is serving you well. We'll keep you posted as we go along. And hope to be really true in documenting the good, the bad, and the ugly :) -- Kelly

    W00t!
    You might consider getting a weed whacker on wheels - like a DR Trimmer Mower. Mine has the capability of putting a circular saw blade on it so you can "mow" saplings and brush up to 3" in diameter to ground level. If you do get one, I highly recommend padding the handle where you grab it - I got carpal tunnel inflammation from trying to mow 6 acres of very rough ground.
    BTW - I have ducks & geese - I love, Love, LOVE them. They are great at sealing (called "gleying") ponds\tanks.

      I my goodness +Kirsten Whitworth you are my hero!!!!!!!! ha ha! Thank you for saying that you have ducks and geese and that they are good at sealing a pond. I've ways wondered how well it actually can be.
      Yes...we did think about getting Trimmer Mower...and we looked at the DR for sure. I'll be doing a full review and blog post/video about why we chose to go with the nutty option of a battery powered weed eater. ha ha. I know it sounds insane even as I type it. :) Thank you so much for commenting and being a part of the community!!!!

    40 deg That's warm for me winter here is -30 maybe lower I like the tiny house idea though from your other video although the kids loft I would raise the roof higher so adults can stand. This tiny house idea I think is really taking off years ago they didn't have big houses and did just fine much easier to heat. One thing I want to mention to you is if your interested wood gasification (syngas) you can make your own fuel rig one of these up to a riding mower and you never have to buy gas just use wood. These were used a lot in WWII era because of gas shortage.

      +Burn Time Oh wowzers!!! That went over my head but I'd LOVE TO LEARN IT!!!
      I or You should write into Jack Spirko at The Survival Podcast to go over this topic...because it sounds AWESOME!!!!!
      Are there any RUclips videos going over how to do this?

    Find someone with goats to take care of the brush while you aren’t there, they love eating brush and other unwanted plants. You can clear away what they don’t touch or have finished

    I want ducks too. You're not alone.
    It may be more than you want to spend, but you could always get an old tractor with a bush hog to help clear out and maintain areas. We just got a 1950 Ford 8n with a back blade for $1300. Bush hogs vary in price, but a lot of times you can find a tractor for sale with one. We needed something to plow the snow from our drive, and it was the best choice (IMO) because it can be so multipurpose with the 3 point and PTO. You'll need to think about driveway maintenance too. Not the right solution for everyone, but it was for us and something to consider.

    • @BetterTogetherLife
      @BetterTogetherLife  7 лет назад +1

      +Eric Rosendaul oh I certainly want a tractor. And good to know that there are lower end options...like even a 1950 model is workable!
      I am not at all mechanical. So I guess that is the only reason why I would consider a newer one. But the main thing for us is we'll need a place to store one first! Haha.

    • @erosendaul
      @erosendaul 7 лет назад +1

      Better Together Life The nice thing with the older tractors is that they are pretty forgiving and pretty easy to work on. There are tons of videos on YT to do just about anything on them and parts are pretty cheap (at least on the old fords).
      As for storage....throw a tarp over it until you have something. It's 16 degrees out here, windy, with a dusting of snow and ours is sitting outside uncovered now (I'll be getting a cover for it this weekend though). They take a bit longer to warm up than newer tractors, but you wouldn't have as bad a time in Texas as we do here in Ohio. Just something to consider. I wanted a nice used subcompact JD, Mahindra, or Kubota, but didn't want to finance it, didn't have $10k+ to drop on one, and needed a solution for snow sooner (though of course we haven't gotten any measurable amounts of snow since I got it). Lots of options out there and I dig the vintage look of the old ones. Harkens back to a time when life was simpler and people didn't need all the fancy stuff on their tractors.

    I hate to tell you but the top hanger on your gate is upside down :) Thought i would let you know before the gate start sagging alot.

    • @berendesb
      @berendesb 7 лет назад

      On second thought maybe you put it that way cause it would be harder to steal?

    • @BetterTogetherLife
      @BetterTogetherLife  7 лет назад +1

      +Stan Darsh Oh thank you!!!! Well...Tractor Supply told me to do it that way because it is an entry gate from our county road. They said to clamp it in that way so that it is harder for someone to steal it.
      We live 2hrs away from our property and are only able to get up there 1-2x per month.
      Thoughts? Does that make sense? It is a pretty light weight gate. Once we move up there permanently we will be upgrading the gate to something automatic.

    • @berendesb
      @berendesb 7 лет назад

      As long as you're not using it constantly i think it would be fine the way it is, I figured after i wrote the first comment that maybe it was a anti-theft deal which makes sense. Think you are doing a good job keep up the hard work!

    • @codeyalan
      @codeyalan 7 лет назад

      Better Together Life you put the gate on like that so cows with horns can't come up to the gate and take it off the hinges and get out, it's not that hard to steal as it sits now just a farm and ranch thing. love what your doing. why no mower?

    be careful of the pond, doing anything to it, could bring out the county soil people. Keep a low profile.

    8:20 "in order to get water on your property you need a huge drought" So all of these trees have to go because they require water from the ground so they are evil and must be destroyed, 9:01 What I want is dust...

      @BetterTogetherLife  7 лет назад +2

      +TruAnRksT Not sure I understand. I'd love to better help...just not following.
      1) we want a 1/4acre fish pond...to fish and to pump nutrient rich water up to our food forest.
      2) we do not believe "trees are evil". If that is what you were saying.
      Sooooo glad that you've watched a few of our videos!!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!!
      We just got back from another trip so we hope to have a bunch more to share. :)

      We actually have never found out with all of our children. We feel like this is the last and only true SURPRISE left in life. Can't paint the nursery blue or pink because you have no idea. Grandparents can't make comments that they wanted a boy or girl because once the baby is here...they will love them no matter what. (Hopefully).

      That's a good way to look at it! For my daughter I was gonna have the sonographer write the sex on a piece of paper and give it to a friend for a gender reveal cake.. but I caved as soon as the sonographer asked if I wanted to know during the procedure. haha. Anyway, congrats!! and good luck with your project. (: Can't wait to see the outcome!

    Good work brother. A handy little hack for turning in hinge post lags is to run the treads through a very wet bar of hand soap. Load up the tread channels with the wet soap which acts like grease and makes for easier work.

    An electric fence run by solar that is movable would allow you to house chickens or goats or a cow(s) in safety from predators ( c/Abundance Permaculture ) . You may have to rent a farmer with a bush hog to mow, and/or use a disc to turn under the weeds, then level with a grate to plant grass. Also if are you saying you want to do away with a natural holding pond, or are you saying you want to expand the pond you have ? That part wasn't clear. I bet no one told you that buying your land was probably the least expense you will encounter in the long run when establishing a homestead. Think good thoughts.

    • @BetterTogetherLife
      @BetterTogetherLife  7 лет назад +2

      +Thoughts In Passing Oh yes...we know that this will be expensive!!!
      Yep, the Justin Rhodes method of chickens is our plan.
      Yes we plan to expand the pond...we just posted a full video of our permaculture Design. People are saying good things about it!! :)
