I use Sony Vegas - it's a little expensive, but worth it - though I started with windows movie maker, and then avidemux, and lightworks which are all free. You can also try Blender - it's free - but the learning curve is a bit more difficult. I haven't messed with video too much there yet, but it's a great program.
