Trailheads: The Oregon Trail's Origins Documentary

- With the first documentary from MinnMax, we travel back to 1971 to tell the surprising story of how a college project from Bill Heinemann, Paul Dillenberger, and Don Rawitsch was donated to the state of Minnesota and its organization MECC and went on to become one of the most celebrated games of all time. A lot of us only know The Oregon Trail gameplay from the Apple II, but its true groundbreaking origins go back so much earlier. Since the documentary is about the power of teaching, programming, and selflessness, we've bundled the documentary with a charity drive for New Vision Foundation. This immigrant-led nonprofit is teaching underprivileged kids in Minnesota how to code to help decrease the racial income disparities in Minnesota. Check out the link below to donate!

How do I donate to these guys who gave me 100s of hours of joy as a child of MN District 11 in the 80s?
I love everything about this channel. I'm going to bcome a patreon supporter soon. I am gameinformer fan and love what's going on at minnmax!!!!
@@tcoop25 they rather you donate to the foundation obviously
I was going to comment a joke like “Look out Noclip, MinnMax is coming for you!” but wow Ben...this was really interesting.
For real- love this format!
I think anyone would be lucky to have had one of these men as an teacher. Some great guys who were obviously very skilled
I don't think I'd be a game designer if not for this game. Very fond memories in elementary school in the computer lab.
Love the use of a bluegrass cover of “somewhere over Jordan” perfect mood setter to close on.
As a member of the "Oregon Trail Generation" I appreciated this. I think my first version was the monochrome one played on an Apple IIe in like first or second grade, then later the upgraded non-monochrome version. I have a copy on CD laying around here some where.
I learned a lot!
Any chance of you guys doing an Apple IIe version playthrough at some point?

Kyle!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You were a staple of gameinformer. Enjoy you still.
@@colhall3221 Thanks Colton! I appreciate it :)
How does this not have more views?! This doc is AMAZING!!! I would say it is the Oregon Trail of documentaries, but people know what Oregon Trail is.
Jokes aside, this is superb. Thank you minmax!!!
Ha, thanks so much for watching! Help share it with a friend?
Fantastic documentary and I would love to see more docs from MinnMax
I absolutely love this. Oh my God, please more. Thank you, Ben.
This was a really interesting, enjoyable documentary. I'm only 26 and live on the west coast but in my elementary school classes we'd play some spelling game and a version of Oregon trail. This game was really fun and had us thinking of different ways to tackle the trail, sharing tips from the start and how far we made it. Really left a lasting impression.
It's awesome that they implemented data based on real diaries
What an unexpected treat. Really great work guys. The best documentaries always tell me about something I didn’t know I was interested in and that is exactly what this accomplished. Took me back to being in 2nd grade thinking, “why did I hunt so many buffalo?”
Rip and Tear
Ben, incredible job! I’ve been hearing you talk about documentaries like this on the GI Show and MinnMax for years now. You should be really proud of this.
SO awesome! Man, I didn’t realize that the creators never made a dime! As a kid you don’t even think about that kind of thing I guess.
Legends! Wouldn't have been the same if they monetized it. Goes to show there's a cost to selling something.
Great work, Ben and team! Excellent first documentary. And great restraint in cutting this down. I think it's the perfect pace and length for the amount of content.
I love minnmax. I will definitely give money when I get paid. Even if it's one dollar. I really enjoy all minnmax content!!!!
I can't believe this documentary is free. It's like a hidden gem of the internet!
Thanks, Luke! Hopefully it won't be too hidden?
This was excellent. You got a lot of great content from these guys. They seem so humble and happy about the whole experience.
not all of them seem humble. They should of been paid
This was fantastic! As a native Minnesotan (and teacher), I can't believe I didn't know that it originated here!
Between this and D&D, 1970s Minnesota had a HUGE hand in setting the groundwork for modern gaming!
Thanks so much for watching it, Kevin! How'd you find the video?
@@minnmax I recently watched a Deepest Dive and was trolling through your RUclips channel looking for additional interesting content that I may have missed over the months.
My original introduction was seeing you (I assume this is Ben) on the Easy Allies podcast ages ago.
Well done Ben. I went to school in Apple Valley MN. I loved playing Oregon Trail. Enjoyed the heck out of this.
Thanks so much, which years?
Oh hell yeah, very excited about this! You love to see it!
I remember waiting in PC class in 1995-ish to get a turn playing Oregon Trail on the one colour CRT the school had... in small-town South Africa. The reach and impact are immense.
Oh wow, thanks for leaving a comment!
This was a great watch.. I played Oregon Trail in elementary school and this was really cool to see. Lots of respect for the original creators especially, and MinnMax for the incredible Netflix/Amazon quality presentation.
Love this! I'm part of The Oregon Trail generation and this game meant so much to be growing up. Thanks for making this. ^__^
Thank you so much for watching it!
I'm here from the Video Game History Hour podcast. Wow what a doc! Loved this!!
I remember seeing it on Apple II computers. Congrats on the trio for delivering such a great educational and fun game.
Awesome seeing how passionate these guys are about telling the story
GREAT stuff. Hope more documentaries can be made by MinnMax in the future.
This is great Ben 😊👍 I love how positive the three creators are. No bitterness at all about not making money from it. Heartwarming.
Loved this! Not only the history, but great editing and music choices.
hell yeah been hoping minnmax would start making docs
Congratulations on the Emmy nomination Ben!!!
Thank you, Michael!
Amazing work Ben and team! I'd love to see more of these:)
I loved this! Great work, Ben! It has to feel amazing getting this out there!
Great job! I'm glad you could finally release this Ben. I look forward to potential future documentaries from MinnMax.
Excellent documentary, it was great to finally learn about how this great game was made and the people that made it. Thank you!
Ben. This was fantastic. I cannot wait for more of these.
Wow, this was excellent and so sweet. Well done, Ben!
This was a great documentary. Great job Ben!
That was great! I hope to see more content like this from you guys. Glad you were finally able to get this out Ben. And I LOVE this music at the end... Well done!
I didn't fully realize how much I was waiting for this till I saw it on my notification list and started basically chanting "this is it? this is it!" Wonderfully done Ben.
Interesting bit of video game history. I played it back in the 80s on an Apple IIe and it really stuck with me.
Congrats on the Emmy nomination. Heard about this from the podcast and enjoyed every minute.
Right on, thanks so much for watching!
This was excellent. Great job, Ben!
He's knocking it out of the park, as always.
Ben, I’ve been a follower of MinnMax since you left Game Informer in 2019. I just heard your interview you did with Jared Petty on the Top 100 Games Podcast, and I just wanna say you did great work on this documentary. Keep up the good content!
Wow, what an awesome documentary! Very good on MinnMax for putting this out there, and to the creators for contributing to my early education.
Glad you found it, James!
More fantastic content from a fantastic channel. Well done Hanson!
Ben this was wonderful. You have said you were not sure what you had and how to finish it but this was wonderful. I'm very thankful for you for bringing a story i didnt know i needed told being told. Solid You did a wonderful job on this.
great production guys!! thanks for sharing!!
This was really, really fantastic!
Great doc Ben and co. Being from the UK we have little knowledge of The Oregon Trail but hear it brought up alot and yours and other American podcasts. A fascinating story.
I'm from the UK too, but I played this game on an Apple IIe browser based emulator back in like 2013 or 2014... it was either because I read an article about it on GI from Hanson, or I heard one of them talking about it on Replay. Either way I got super into it and absolutely adored it.
It's definitely a slice of American history in video game form, it's an experience.
Great job Ben! This is sweet! Has a high quality feel to it. Well edited.
Thanks so much, glad you found it!
Awesome fundraiser and awesome documentary!
Nice! More of these please!
Well done, Ben. This turned out great.
Thanks, Brian!
This was excellent!!! Thank you!
Fantastic. I really enjoyed this!
Good job, Ben! Damn good documentary, sir!
Wonderful job Hanson! Absolutely loved this I never knew anything about the creators of a game probably everyone in America has played so this was interesting.
These genius motherfuckers helped lay the tracks for accessible computing in schools. They no doubt ended up inspiring thousands and lowered the barrier to technology for so many more students. Those kids are the adults who code the software we use today.
This is so dense, professional, 💯.
Great work Ben!
Finally got around to this. It's fantastic! Great job Ben! Those guys seem really cool, too.
Thanks so much for watching, Georgie!
Awesome job, Ben.
Great documentary, Ben. You should be proud.
Great job! I couldn’t tell you the number of hours I spent on this game in school, loved it
Nice job, Ben! I remember playing MECC games on the apple II computers when I was in 1st grade in 1984 in winnetka elementary in Crystal, MN. My favorites are Oregon Trail and Odell Lake.
Wow! This is such a great idea for the channel.
Thank you for making this
Thank YOU for watching!
"The Origin Trail"
Good job Hanson! As a kid I had no idea Oregon Trail was this relic of the past and I had no idea MECC stood for that either.
Great job Ben! 🔥
So good. Great job!
Loved this so much.
These 3 guys are the best!
A great watch. A job well done to everyone that put this together.
Thank you so much, Mike! How'd you find it?
This was excellent 👍 brought back a lot of memories as a kid growing up in Minnesota playing the Apple II version of the game in the school computer lab.
Oh great, glad you found it! How'd you find it, by the way?
@@minnmax I was showing my kids a video of what the game looked like, then thought to see if anyone made a documentary on it. Came right up searching on "Oregon trail documentary"
My father-in-law is featured (typing) at about 14:28! So cool that he worked on this as a teen!
That's great! How'd you find the video?
@@minnmax He (FiL) shared it with me. :)
This was so good!!!
Fantastic documentary!
Good stuff Ben!
Great job Ben! Really interesting
Hometown heroes. Great doc!
Awesome Doc Ben! Seriously enjoyed all of it. Nice enjoying some Member-berries today. I can't believe I didn't know all that. Can't wait for more!
Oh, and yeah, thanks for making Apple computers the standard in schools, when Windows OS was the standard in the working world. lol Only reason I knew how to use a Mac was because that's all we had in school. Then my friends and I went home and played on our PC's. :P
Amazing! I hope the video will do well!
Those dudes are all the definition of good eggs.
That was excellent! Thanks for making that. I’m glad those three have such a positive view on the outcome because I would be so bitter about not getting any money out of that game. They should do a go-fund-me and I bet they would get a million dollars!
This is fascinating. I really don't know much about Oregon Trail. It's so sad that they didn't get paid.
Fantastic documentary Ben. Commenting for ENGAGEMENT
I am glad they all seem content with how things turned out.
Bravo - well done Ben
Fantastic Documentary! It's too bad they didn't get any money from those. Played a ton of Oregon Trail the 3rd and 4th edition back in the 90's.
Heard about this on KFGD. Great job!
Oh wow, thanks for checking it out Joshua!
Incredible documentary!
Thanks so much, Tuna!
Great documentary! Really interesting
The original Minnesota Maximum
Incredible!!! Fantastic job, Mr. Hanson!!
I remember playing Oregon Trail in school along with some game where you were a fish trying to survive in a lake. Really fun times.
That "trailheads" logo on his jean jacket is fire. Looks like something straight out of Rocco's Modern Life.
Heard about this on Kinda Funny and I'm so glad this exists!
Oh great, thank you so much!
