- Today I'm talking about the pros and cons to actually working at a coffee shop that you open versus hiring people to work it for you. There's a lot to consider on this topic and I want to offer my insight after owning my own shop for 6 years.
I’m sharing one of our secrets today about how we evaluate our employees and hold them accountable! This is a huge reveal, so enjoy! 😘

I'm almost 52 years old and I'm working towards opening a coffee shop. These great videos!!
I turn 51 this year & I have decided to finally go for my dream of opening my own coffee shop! Good luck to you & your shop!!!!
I am 53 and am wanting to open one in about 5 or so years. Just starting research. Luckily my boyfriend has been a barista for 15 years so he’ll run the front and I’ll do the books/back. Good advice on making sure the back is well-run as well!
I am opening up a cafe and espresso shop soon and I am finding your channel and personality just absolutely delightful and helpful! I currently own a pizza and sub shop and am 24 years old so I can totally relate to being a young business owner!! I have the same issue with being SO involved in my restaurant ( I work 7 days a week) that my employees rely on me too much at times, and it's often a tough balance to find because the customers love seeing me in there, and the employees tell me they love working with me, so it makes it hard! I have been stepping back lately but my location and type of business can make it difficult to hire at times, so I don't always have the leisure ( I currently have 13 employees and my parents help me out in shop as well!) Now that I'm moving into the coffee biz which is where my true passion has been since I was probably 12, I'm REALLY thankful I've come across your channel because you're helping me fill in some of the blanks that I have been questioning. Definitely your average person does not understand what goes on behind the scenes with paying bills, ordering, food cost, prep, updating media, training etc.. so at least knowing what I am getting myself into makes me that mush more confident because being a young boss is definitely challenging and demanding! I know you probably want to keep your operation and how you do things private, but I love just learning and seeing how the machines function/ what kind of equipment a person opening up a shop might need to consider getting as a new coffee shop owner! Again thanks for all the insight so far, it's so refreshing to find another younger business owner who can relate to the triumphs and struggles of owning your own business. Congrats to you guys for all of your successes you should be super proud!!
Christosity wow good for you with all the achievement! Can I ask how you picked the location and how long it took you for the upcoming coffee shop?
You are my go to girl as I try to navigate the process of how to open up our own coffee shop and be as ready as possible for the chaos if we actually do it -thanks for the videos I’m taking notes ☺️
So great to hear from you again! I listened to the podcast too before I came back to comment. You’re doing great things and I am SO PROUD OF YOU AND KASEY! And so excited that you share your journey with us! I love the quarterly feedback vs bi annual or annual. Then you can nip problems in the bud, as well as encourage employees who are consistently doing great work. Do these come with a raise or other incentive or just feedback? I literally got a call while listening to the podcast that rock was being delivered to our site and a back hoe was coming to start digging!!! My landscaper was telling me he didn’t get to trim because they showed up!!! Remember though that while you know your customers and it is a special opportunity to work in your business, that no one can do what you and Kasey can do ON the business as well as you guys can. Keep innovating and doing scary things, and go there when you want to. Isn’t that a blessing-you can go there when you WANT to?!?! I’ll be emailing you soon!!!
I wish other business would do this with their employees!! You are the face of the business but your employees are your makeup!! And with well trained knowledgeable employees and CONSISTENT employees it is SO IMPORTANT!! Love that you have quarterly evaluations! It lets them know you care and helps them now and with later jobs in life! You are doing well! Good job!!
Impressed by how you run the business and be responsible for your employees. Can you talk about how you picked the first location and if you borrowed money from bank? First time entrepreneurs facing those challenges if you can talk about it that would be great.
Google User absolutely! We are planning a series soon that will walk through the entire process :)
Thank you!!!
40 employees - that is a lot! I am generally against them having to take a test but with that many employees I guess that is what one would have to do. With the shop we are planning we really just want to stay at one location and keep our employees to as much of a minimum as possible so I would think they would be much easier to manage simply because there won’t be a lot of them.
Hello hope u good and business is going well, and I'm sure it vl b,, watching this video today I hv been bit busy,,
That all business. The will good days, weeks, months and years. Bad days, weeks , months and years.
romeo bocala so true! It’s a constant rollercoaster!
@@funtrepreneurs a friendly advice be careful with the bad apples in the group. For the employees and customer.
Absolutely :) they happen with every business!
@@funtrepreneursplease dont go to California please. TOO much legal and regalution and the rent PIRCE is too much and dont start with wage in here. Which country and city has they own rule for wage.
do y'all ask employees for feedback for the management/ you and your husband as well? like how you could be better at serving them/ open it up for them to praise or give you feedback?
Absolutely! Of course! We are super open and always here for communication. We actually even offer an anonymous option for them to give us feedback by filling out an online form. That way they don’t ever have to feel pressure if they have something that they want us to know about or be aware of. During the one- on- one with their manager, there’s a dedicated time for them to ask questions and to give their feedback if they feel anything can be improved. Several RUclipsrs seem very concerned about these meetings we have, but our employees tell us they look forward to them! It’s a great way for them to get feedback on all the good they are doing and a way for them to set goals for growth and raises as well! ☺️ We have found company wide they have been amazing for everyone!
Can suggest some name for cafe plz
what kind of puppy do you have?
Starting a coffee shop is too hard.
Sorry but if you don’t train your staff to do the basics such as to put out new merch or refill cups every time you’re running low, that’s on you. I feel like if my boss spoke to me with such a condescending tone I wouldn’t feel respected as an employee. How can you expect them to do something you didn’t even ask in the first place
Hi Gaby! I think you must be confused. Our employees know what is expected of them every single shift. We have chore lists they complete before they leave their shift, and they have monthly duties that are assigned to them. There is absolutely no “conceding tones” ever spoken to our employees.
I like to see your face make my coffee too
Just found your page this morning. Really enjoy your videos and advice you give. We are building our coffee ☕️ shop on wheels currently. Should be open for Business by December 1st. My family and I are from Oklahoma ✌🏻
Ruthardt 4 Adventure thank you so much! I am excited for you guys to open your shop! It will be your greatest adventure!
@@funtrepreneurs Did you end up opening your shop on wheels?
great video thank you so much for all your honest experience and tips!
this was really informative! you seem to be doing really well as far as ownership/management goes. wondering if you find it better to hire a manager from the outside or if you prefer to promote from within? i see the pros & cons to both, but i’m concerned about promoting within because of possible favoritism or the manager not being taken seriously if they are already “in” with the staff, if that makes sense?
Hi make pleace new video please give us tips
was very interested in this video...but the constant hair talk is a turn off. nobody cares about your hair, we re here for the content. goodluck!
Just a human over here providing free content for people Lavinia. 🤷🏼♀️ Sorry you don’t like it.
Are you set up as an LLC Scorp or Ccorp?
SO S we are set up as an LLC Scorp
these are really high expectations from your employees. Just curious how much you're paying them per hour and if they get benefits? It's a bit unfair to expect the maximum if you're only paying the minimum...
I agree. It is annoying when employers expect the maximum while only paying the minimum, especially without incentives when employees have been there a while. Any employee should be paid a livable wage and get benefits.
Did you have any experience working in a coffee shop before starting your own? Sorry if you have already talked about this, I’m new here.
Hadley Culp hi! Welcome! Thanks for checking out our channel! I did work in coffee for about two years before opening up our own shop. I suggest it greatly if you’re going to open your own shop! The knowledge of espresso preparation, customer flow, and basic drink preparation all come from experience! :)
