I did this about 5 years ago to repair a bad sending unit, fuel pump went bad yesterday, drilled out a few pop rivets and in about 10 minutes I’m in business

can you make the hole bigger? Or is there bracing under there? Maybe have a 3D printer access plate made to fit the floor contour exactly would be interesting.

The hole could be slightly wider not really long ways, and thats a good idea, I went with a piece of sheet metal because thats what I had laying around

How did you prep tank for saftey?

You can remove body bolts and jack up the body, then slide sheet metal over the top of the tank

What year is your YJ? I have an 88 - is the hole placement the same?

1995 I would assume it is, my tank is a 15 gal. If you loosen the body bilts on the back and near the gas tank and lift the body up you can get a measurement of how far in it is

I certainly hope nobody destroys the jeep with this unbelievable bad advice. Why would you do that to your jeep. It is not that hard to remove the tank to access the pump/sender. Bad idea.
